I noticed reading Ace that The Stranger (the alternative Seattle rag) has taken down the Hell Houses piece - here's an update from Dori Monson. Seems they got "death threats" or some such thing, and became concerned for their safety...oh yeah, and they don't want anything to happen to the people whose addresses they listed, either.

Speaking of Libya:
Libya pays off $1.5B terror bill
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. state department says Libya has paid $1.5 billion US into a fund to compensate the families of American victims of Libyan-linked terror attacks in the 1980s.
A department spokesman says the payment clears a final hurdle in the full normalization of long-strained ties between Washington and Tripoli. In exchange, the Bush administration will restore the Libyan government's immunity from terror-related lawsuits and dismiss pending compensation cases.
The money will go into a $1.8-billion fund that will pay $1.5 billion in claims for the 1988 Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, and the 1986 bombing of a German disco. Another $300 million will go to Libyan victims of U.S. airstrikes ordered in retaliation for the disco bombing.

I am in Russia now, where I just got back from Mass for All Souls (Nov. 2). The priest brought up how the communists destroyed cemeteries and converted them into parks. This happened all over the former USSR. It makes me think about those who want "change" try to eradicate the past: culture, beliefs, etc.

I posted this earlier in the busy ID thread: From fivethirtyeight.com, which I'm sure some of you discount since the only point of the site is to digest and number crunch polling but this seems reasonable to me:
This is beginning to look like a five-state election. Those states are Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Nevada. Essentially all relevant electoral scenarios involve some combination of these five states.
If McCain is going to pull the upset, he'll have to get the easier swing states like Florida, Indiana, North Carolina and then move on to the 5 mentioned above.

I agree, this is more of a financial investment for the seller (and maybe even buyer) than an intellectual one.

Statement From The Honorable Carlos Gutiérrez
WASHINGTON – The Honorable Carlos Gutiérrez, the highest ranking Hispanic political figure in the United States, issued the following statement about his choice for President, John McCain. As a Latino immigrant who after arriving in the United States worked hard to achieve the American Dream, Gutiérrez asserts that John McCain, and not Barack Obama, is the President that Latinos need in the White House. John McCain proposes to create opportunities to all Americans and preserve the American Dream. In his message, Gutiérrez also urges Latinos to vote.
To listen to the RNC’s new radio ad, please click here.
Script of “The Honorable Carlos Gutierrez—Vote for McCain”
Hello, this is Carlos Gutiérrez on behalf of John McCain.
Hispanics like me came to this country to achieve the American Dream. I left Cuba at a young age because of the political and economic circumstances in my native land.
In the U.S., I have provided my family a future that would have been impossible in Cuba.
Today, during this difficult economic time, I believe that John McCain is the only candidate who will truly work for positive economic growth for our community.
McCain’s opponent has publicly stated his intention to redistribute our earnings. He wants to control our money and punish success.
We, Hispanics, are hardworking individuals and John McCain, who has been fighting for this country since the age of 17, understands that we, and not the government, should decide what’s best for our hard earned paycheck. McCain will create opportunity for advancement, for our children to better afford higher education and will provide more accessible and higher quality health care than opponent, including those with pre-existing conditions.
So please, let’s make a difference by going to the polls. Put your country first by voting for John McCain. He has always been a true friend of our community. Do it for our children and for the preservation of the American Dream.

There's a new ad out where a cute little 8 year old comes into the living room where her dad is watching TV. She asks, "Daddy, can I borrow the car?"
The dad is confused as to why his 8 year old daughter is asking to borrow the car, and he looks at her, then the car keys, then back at his daughter. Curious as to what's going on, he finally says, "Sure . . ."
She bends down, out of frame, to pick up the keys, and when she comes back up, she's a 16-year-old young woman (she's still in similar clothes), who says, "Thanks, daddy!"
The dad gets a worried look on his face.

Actually, I think the writing award is really the more meaningful one, though in this particular case, there were pretty significant differences between the script that Damon and Affleck wrote and what ultimately appeared on screen with Good Will Hunting.
I can't say I'm a big fan, but Affleck is still an actor with an Academy Award, so is not wrong to say he's an Academy Award winning actor, even if said award wasn't for acting.

Mine are 5 3/4, 3 3/4 and 17 months.
What I would do:
Kiss all ouchies.
Apply 1 bandaid to the worst.
Give a drink of water and tell him to lie down and give the ouchies a rest.
He should be out in 15, unless he napped too long today or something real is bothering him.

It's meant for democrats to send to other democrats, so that they're scared into voting (it can be customized with anyone's name). Up until that last sectio, though, you could just as easily send it to a fellow conservative and make them out to be a hero!

I think that Obama is not nearly far enough ahead in the polls to be confident of a win. I think he has a multiple Bradley effect working against him: not just because of race, but because of the social pressure of his "way cool" media buzz. Lots of people who won't vote for him nevertheless want to be seen as supporting him -- too embarrassing for them to be seen supporting McCain/Palin or simply not supporting the "deluxe brand."

I thought weekend (Saturday/Sunday - not Friday) polling was notoriously inaccurate. When things shift on the weekend, it usually doesn't worry me.
I've also read many times that Obama needs to be up at least ten points to feel fairly secure. He's also spending money in places you wouldn't expect.
I have a feeling we're going to hear the Silent Majority roar on Tuesday. I could, of course, be wrong...but that is my prayer, and I think it could happen.

He got whacked by all the other pollsters and "corrected" the poll to make it more inline with the rest of them. Their main strategy is still to suppress republican votes, we can only hope it actually results in suppressing the dem vote by making them think its already over. Hopefully those young and dumb college kids will opt for a premature victory party instead of voting.

I like the "no blood-no bandaid" rule.
My biggest rule was "no blood, no fever — you're going to school!"
There was a day when that didn't work so well, though. 2nd grader son puked all over desk when his teacher didn't believe him either!

And the Playstation 3 isn't handheld (yet) by the way.
Actually, its quite heavy.
Its still probably the best way to get your mitts on a Blu-ray player, if you've got a 1080 tv and the interest for high def movies.
I think its almost pointless to buy an actual Blu-ray player. Many of them cost more than the PS3, and the PS3 is considered by many to be the best one out there.

Okay, so you're a bit younger than me! I actually remember the Lombardi years (though I was little). It's pretty weird to think about young Packer fans not really knowing any QB but Favre - did your son take Favre's ultimate departure pretty hard? I sure did, but I guess it's going to be all right after all.

Its "Call of Duty" a popular first-person combat simulator game that I believe can be played on line.
Speaking of video games, does anybody remember "Ghost Recon"? It was in the news not too long ago because, even though the game was released in 2001, the plot involved Russian hardliners invading Georgia in August 2008.
If you'll remember, Russia actually did wind up invading Georgia in August 2008.

I
think its almost pointless to buy an actual Blu-ray player. Many of
them cost more than the PS3, and the PS3 is considered by many to be
the best one out there.
I can see getting one if you have physical space constraints.
The PS3 unit is bulky, and it won't fit onto the physical space of the usual single stack rack component.
Plus it runs very hot and the cooling fans make it a noisy.
If you want a "normal" remote control (instead of the video game controller) you have to purchase it separately, and since the PS3 remote uses Bluetooth, you can't replace it with an ordinary 'Universal' type remote.
But apart from those limitations, you could look at buying a PS3 as getting a Blu-Ray with a seriously kick-ass gaming system thrown in for free.
Another big boon for the PS3 is that it has its own hard drive, and can play ordinary .mp3 and .avi files. It also has USB ports and can even play movies directly from a USB thumbdrive.

I think Virginia really is the key....very reliably red BUT it doesn't take a huge leap of faith to go blue, they did elect Webb after all. Bush won by about 250,000 votes in 04.
I think it will be 'too close to call' for most of the night, then once it gets called either way that is the way the whole election goes.
Actually, Virginia is purple. The NoVa suburbs outside DC are increasingly blue, and they are growing. In addition to electing Jim Webb, Virginians have elected Democrats in the last two gubernatorial elections, and they are poised to elect another Democratic senator. Jim Warner, one of those governors, is running 20-30 points ahead of his Republican opponent. It's a complex state w/ a substantial African-American population, many veterans and active duty military, moderates from both parties in the NoVa suburbs, and social conservatives in other parts of the state.
I think it's quite likely that Obama will take the state.

MoveOn for Obama—3 Days Left!
Dear MoveOn member,
Here's some ominous news: In the last week, Obama's lead in the national tracking polls has dropped by almost three points. If it keeps dropping, we could be looking at four years of President McCain and Vice President Palin.
Now, don't panic yet. Obama's still ahead. But if you thought it didn't matter whether you helped the campaign this weekend, think again. The election looks like it'll be very, very close. If folks start thinking that Obama's got this one licked, and he doesn't really need their vote—well, we could be in big trouble.
To win, Obama needs a flood of volunteers in swing states to bring in every possible vote. You can help Obama recruit those volunteers right now—by calling MoveOn members in swing states with our easy-to-use website and asking them to volunteer. All you need is a phone and a computer with internet. Try it for five minutes, and trust us, you'll be hooked.
Don't get mad, don't get scared—get to work. Obama needs us now. Click here to start making calls:
link deleted
We know these calls are working—we've already gotten over 140,000 new battleground-state volunteers for Barack. But the campaign still needs more folks for this final push.
Thanks for all you do,
–Adam, Daniel, Peter, Karin and the rest of the team

I don't think there is any 04 Bush state that is completely out of the question for McCain, New Mexico would probably be the one but even if he lost that and kept Iowa, he's still wins.
All three of the poll aggregator sites (i.e., RCP, Pollster, 538) have Iowa up by about 12 points. The polls could be wrong, but they would have to be wrong by quite a bit for McCain to hold onto that state. The margin is narrower in some of the western states. Of the three Southwestern swing states Nevada is closest, then Colorado, then New Mexico.

Which 'Bradley staff' are you talking about? The Bradley effect was isolated and confirmed circa 1978... And its existence today can pretty much only be confirmed or denied AFTER Nov 4...
The Bradley Effect = potential voters not wanting to be PERCEIVED AS or CALLED 'racist', therefore saying one thing to pollsters and doing otherwise in the privacy of the voting booth.

That doesn't discount the Bradley effect, though.

Be positive and go help turn out the vote! (Or, if you must be negative, go help turn out the vote just the same, in hopes of averting disaster!)

News from the Votemaster
It was bound to happen and it happened. Today we have more state polls than there are states. There are 54 new polls in 22 states today. Furthermore, the lead has changed in five states, and all five changes favor Kerry. As a result, Kerry has now passed Bush in the electoral college. If today's results are the final results Wednesday morning, John Kerry will be elected as the 44th President of the United States, with 283 votes in the electoral college to George Bush's 246. But don't count on it. Many of Kerry's leads are razor thin. Counting only the strong + weak states, Bush leads 229 to 196, with 113 electoral votes in the tossup category Kerry's leads in the tossup states mean little to nothing. The turnout Tuesday will determine who wins.

Ask yourself: what useful purpose is served by predicting anything other than a McCain/Palin win right at this moment? At the end of this marathon, it's not time to consider the prospect of failure, but rather time to focus in on the needed actions to achieve victory.
You need to consider that a proud McCain voter should at this time be encouraging other proud McCain voters to get out the vote for McCain, not engaging in mental masturbation about the odds of winning.
