re: #1 Eowyn2
Huh, talk about money and brain cells - just posted this on the prior thread when Charles put this thread up and sorry for the re-post:
OT and posted in spinoff links in prior thread, but you all have to read this one:
Obama raised $104 million toward election's close
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's presidential campaign raised $104 million in the weeks around Election Day, a grand finale to a successful bid that shattered fundraising records.
Overall, Obama raised nearly $750 million during his odyssey to the presidency, and his spending in the eight weeks before the election vastly outpaced that of his Republican rival John McCain, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. The reporting period covered Oct. 15-Nov. 24.
The campaign said more than 1 million contributors donated during the period, with more than half donating for the first time. Throughout the campaign, more than 3.95 million contributors gave to the eventual president-elect, his campaign said.
Obama's fundraising sum was more than the combined total of the two major parties' nominees four years ago. George W. Bush and John Kerry pulled in a total of $653 million in the 2004 primary and general election campaigns, including federal public financing money.
The final numbers underscore how pivotal the two candidates' strategies were for funding their general election campaigns: McCain accepted $84 million in taxpayer money through the public financing system; Obama gambled that he could raise far more from private money.
The two campaigns spent identical amounts in June, $25.6 million each. But from there the numbers diverged widely, until a stretch in October when the Obama financial juggernaut swamped McCain. By then, the Democrat was outspending his rival four to one.
The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, was expected to report spending $30,000 on accessories for McCain running mate Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. The RNC reported in October that it had spent nearly $150,000 on Palin for clothes and accessories. A party spokesman said Thursday that the expenditures were directed by the McCain campaign and that the garments have been returned to the party.
"The accessories used by Governor Palin and represented in the Republican National Committee's filings both in October and December with the Federal Election Commission were the result of coordinated expenditures at the campaign's direction," the spokesman, Alex Conant, said. "Accessories have been returned, inventoried, and will be appropriately dispersed to various charities."
[emphasis added, realwest]
As I've said before, Obama BOUGHT this election and rented America for four years.

Gun Safety is an extremely important issue. Movies and TV shows that have guns in them almost always fail to deliver a safe gun approach. And in a lot of cases deliver unsafe gun handling tips.
The NRA (of which I am a member) has the opportunity to help correct these bad images but doesn't think it is important enough to cover. Gun Safety should be hand in hand with gun rights.

Now, RW, think about this for a second. Would you have concluded differently if it was the GOP candidate who raised that much money?
I have agreed in the past that money is a form of Free Speech as protected by the First Amendment, which is why John McCain's Campaign Reform Laws were such a load of crap.

Pro football players are not generally drafted and developed because of their ability to reason and think clearly. A good example is Donovan McNabb, who is absolutely incapable of reading a blitz. When the corners line up inside the receivers and the strong safety walks up to the line of scrimmage, Stevie Wonder could read the blitz coming, but not McNabb.
But Donovan is a Mensa society candidate compared to Burress.
But Burress takes being stupid to an extreme.
I would not mind seeing a lifetime ban from the NFL for him.

I'd like a few more people to weigh in. Used to be--still is in some enclaves--that bargaining with someone would be referred to as "jewing them down," and being cheated would be characterized as "he jewed me."
If the reference is to "cheating" on having the safety off, he's using the word "jew" in that classic pejorative sense, with a very slight adjustment.
It is, however, possible that you are right--but I am not yet convinced.
"Juke" is also used as a sports term...to juke around someone is to make a quick running move and "fake" them. However, this definition says it means "to cheat".

The obligatory bash: CNN's Christiane Amanpour has filed yet another airheaded report (partly carried over from earlier this year) that equates the nipple-ripping, extremity-electrocuting, baby-bashing torture by the late 1970s Khmer Rouge regime with modern-day U.S. waterboarding of detainees at Guantanamo prison. The network heavily promoted her "Scream Bloody Murder" documentary (that aired last night and will several times more), which addresses repeated occurrences of genocide since 1948 when members of the United Nations agreed on a pact to seek the prevention and punishment of such practices. Seems it hasn't done much good, Amanpour asserts.

OK; that gives the derivation a solid setting, in the proper context.
I'm not entirely convinced that the football "juke" term is not derived from the old "jew" term, but until I find further evidence of this please return to your scheduled programming.
Please tell me you're not serious - it's derived from dancing. Juke box, juke joint, etc. etc.

I submit to you that watching Christiane Amanpour is a form of torture worse than waterboarding or nipple ripping.

Quick question:
What does "underwritten" mean? Just heard a radio commercial saying - such and such is underwritten by energy solutions something or other...
It was thrown on at the end of the commercial - sounds like a legal term. Any takers?
Insurance term, usually - to assume liability for something.

The RMN is very conservative, the Denver Post is the liberal paper of record, they both came close to shutting down a number of years ago, there was a little financial jiggering and now they are both owned by a joint news agency that managers them, and it's still not working.

You are going to have to do some very, very fancy linguistic dancing to explain how musical terms like "juke joint" or "juke box" evolved into a word for a sports fakeout. A hell of a lot more dancing than is necessary to point out that the use of "jew" as a synonym for cheating or fakery sounds remarkably like the football cheating or fakery term "juke."
From #88 Desert Dog's post: 2. a fake or feint, usually intended to deceive a defensive player.
Origin:
sp. var. of jouk
Is that fancy enough for you?

You're just sitting there wanting to be offended. It's dumb. Have you ever seen a football game? The term comes from the quick stutter steps, spin moves, etc. to get past a guy standing right in front of you. That term has been around since I've been watching/playing sports - 30+ years.

re: #128 buzzsawmonkey
Acc to Harpers-Collins dictionary of American slang, it does indeed come from juke box, juke joint, etc. The verb "to juke" originally meant to go bar-hopping at dance places, then later came to mean to be a smooth player..being cool, having good dance moves, but avoiding trouble and predatory women....to finesse a tricky situation. The sports term combines the the dance and the avoidance. Its 1st documented sports use was in baseball in the early 60's in ref to pitchers "juking" a good hitter in a tough situation, but it is most commonly used today in football.
Thus spake Harper-Collins.

Quick question:
What does "underwritten" mean? Just heard a radio commercial saying - such and such is underwritten by energy solutions something or other...
It was thrown on at the end of the commercial - sounds like a legal term. Any takers?
Its the public radio term for advertising (since they cannot sell adverstising). The advertiser is called an underwriter. When the FCC relaxed the rulse on what a public radio (or TV) advertiser underwriter could say in the announcement, it became known as "enhanced underwriting."

You're just sitting there wanting to be offended. It's dumb. Have you ever seen a football game? The term comes from the quick stutter steps, spin moves, etc. to get past a guy standing right in front of you. That term has been around since I've been watching/playing sports - 30+ years.
Fighter pilots have been jinking and juking longer than 30 years. I suspect that usage predates footbal usage. As in footbal, refers to defensive moves made to fake out the opponent.

OT : VDH makes compelling points today -
Back to the Old 9/11 World
Now Obama gets to deal with Islamic terror, and has no Bush to blame.
Especially insightful point -
Fourth, the problem of Pakistan and the Islamist terrorism that so frequently emanates from its soil will now be President-Elect Obama’s to deal with. He will have to decide whether George W. Bush’s anti-terrorism architecture shredded the Constitution and should be repealed, or helped to keep us safe from attack for seven years, and thus should be maintained, if not strengthened.Obama once advocated open intrusions into Pakistan in hot pursuit of terrorists, and will have to adjudicate whether such actions will more likely enrage nuclear Pakistan or finally eliminate the followers of Osama bin Laden. At the same time, Obama also must ponder whether he should continue our subsidized “alliance” with Pakistan.
Just as I didn’t envy George W. Bush’s lose/lose dilemma in dealing with Pakistan and global Islamic terrorism, so too I can only sympathize with President-Elect Obama, who faces the same dismal choices.
The more things CHANGE, ...

I vote for the Scottish derivation, rather than the African, myself. It's closer in meaning and early spellings of the word were jouk.
I know the word was used in Appalachia, at least in the early 20th century, which hints at a non-African source.

Well, this part of the Wiki article states that the origins were African...
"In the 1930s and 1940s an African American linguist named Lorenzo Dow Turner did a seminal study of the Gullah language based on field research in rural communities in coastal South Carolina and Georgia. Turner found that Gullah is strongly influenced by African languages in its sound system, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and semantic system. Turner identified over 300 loanwords from various African languages in Gullah and almost 4,000 African personal names used by Gullah people. He also found Gullahs living in remote sea-side settlements who could recite songs and story fragments and do simple counting in the Mende, Vai, and Fulani languages of West Africa. Turner published his findings in a classic work called Africanisms in the Gullah Dialect (1949). His book, now in its 4th edition, was most recently reprinted with a new introduction in 2002.
Before Lorenzo Turner's work, mainstream scholars viewed Gullah speech as substandard English, a hodgepodge of mispronounced words and corrupted grammar uneducated black people developed in their efforts to copy the speech of their English, Irish, Scottish, and French Huguenot slave owners.[2] But Turner's study was so well researched and so convincingly detailed in its presentation of evidence of African influences in Gullah that academics soon reversed course. After Turner's book was published in 1949, scholars began coming to the Gullah region on a regular basis to study African influences in Gullah language and culture."

The ''lost'' ballots only number 133 not enough to give Franken a win even if he got all of those votes!
So what can Franken do?

He wants a forensics team to examine the discarded ballots for ''intent.''

If they could find out where the word was first used, it would tell us a lot. But that's a whole lot easier said than done!
A lot of terms that people once thought originated in the low country cities (particularly NOrleans) have been traced back to Appalachia and then to N England or Scotland. They just floated down there on the barges!
Unfortunately.......I mean for etymologists!.....the days of finding remote, unsullied Appalachians to put under a linguistic microscope are pretty much gone. The last generation raised without mass media is dying fast.
Anyway, thanks for the link. It's interesting to speculate, isn't it? :)

The CFR offer some free advice ($24.95 for the smelly commoners) to their dreamy hearthrob, BHO.
In the Executive Summary you can read this tidbit of their nuanced and sage wisdom:
President Obama’s principal focus will need
to be on Iran, because the clock is ticking on its nuclear
program. He should offer direct official engagement
with the Iranian government, without preconditions,
along with other incentives to attempt to prevent
Iran from developing a capacity to produce substantial
amounts of nuclear weapons-grade fuel in a short
amount of time. Simultaneously, he will need to concert
an international effort to impose harsher sanctions
on Iran if it rejects an outcome the United States and
others can accept. The objective is simple to describe
but will be difficult to achieve: to generate a suspension
of Iran’s enrichment program before it builds the
capacity to enrich enough uranium to provide it with
this “breakout” capability.
Well, lots more could be said. You can read the whole thing if you are into this sort of thing.

Shoplifting suspect uses Taser on Wal-Mart worker
Thu Dec 4, 8:49 pm ETWICHITA, Kan. – Two suspected shoplifters are arrested after one of them zapped a Wichita Wal-Mart employee with a Taser. Police said that two Wal-Mart workers on Wednesday afternoon confronted a pair of women who tried to leave the store without paying for merchandise. At that point, one of the women fired an electroshock from the Taser.
The employee who was shocked was not seriously injured. The two workers were able to hold the suspects until police arrived and placed the women under arrest on suspicion of theft and battery.

Gates Seeks Congress's Help in Closing Guantanamo
Mr. Obama has pledged to close the prison, but aides say it is easier said than done. The president-elect will have to make decisions on issues such as the fate of prisoners who have been approved for release, but whom no other country is willing to accept.More than a dozen Uighurs, Chinese Muslims who were captured near the Afghan border, have been cleared of terrorism charges but remain locked up at Guantanamo because they face persecution in China and no country will accept them.
Mr. Obama will also have to decide whether, and how, to prosecute "high-value detainees" such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Central Intelligence Agency officials have acknowledged that Mr. Mohammed was subjected to waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning, and statements obtained through coercion are difficult to use in court.
It's much easier to be "against" something than it is to actually do something reasonable about the problem.

For a 1st gun (with no dollar restriction) I'd suggest a .45 auto with an attached flashlight/laser. Otherwise, a 12 guage pump action with a pistol grip (depending on your hand/wrist strength). But I don't know what costs are out on the coast. I'd think prices might be lower if you go to a gun show, but I'm a novice in the area of shows.
I'd suggest you go to a gun shop and talk to someone with an inventory they can show you.

Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump.
Next question?
(I confess, I'm not sure what you mean by "must be used in a Condo")
You'll want to take a look at ammo too. For a 12 guage, I'd suggest something like Remington Handicap Premier Target Load. It's designed for shooting clay targets, but it has a lighter load, so shouldn't go through your neighbor's wall.
For a handgun, I'd suggest loading with prefragmented ammo for the same reason.

It's not even bad to work here. But I swear to you that I notice, every year, that it's dirtier, and the streets are in worse shape.
And MUNI provokes me to bad language with monotonous regularity. I hold that it is a system that could be run better by toddlers playing with blocks. I believe, in my soul, that the N Judah Line drivers get a bonus for making us commuters miss our trains. I am certain that when something dies on a MUNI train, it is carefully preserved, so the commuters can arrive at their jobs sick to their stomachs. The only thing that keeps the filth and the bugs under control on MUNI is that there are no soft surfaces, and they must hose the trains out.
Suing MUNI is a sport, here. And anyone can play!

The Mossberg's a great shotgun. However, the Remington 870 has more aftermarket options available if you want to alter things over time. That's the primary reason I went with the 870 with the shorter barrel. Over time, I've added an extended magazine, folding stock and laser/flashlight combo that can be activated by a touchpad.
For sheer intimidation, the pump action sound of the shotgun in a dark room will generally cause loosening bowels by the perpatrator. However, if you're in a hallway and need to turn around quickly, the handgun will allow you more rapid physical movement.
There are certainly different schools of thought with regards to home defense. Me, I figure the best home defense tool is the closest to hand when I need it.

Glocks all have "internal" safeties only. Which is to say; they absolutely, positively will not fire, unless you pull the trigger; but they will fire if you do (and there's a round in the chamber). There is no safety "switch". Personally, I think this is a very good system; less is more, one simple rule to remember. Of course, that wasn't enough for Plaxico.

I heard something which sounded off--but it seems I was mistaken. Fine. I've gotten over it, and advise you to consider doing the same. I find the derivation somewhat curious, but on reflection can see how a slang term for evasion in a mobile sport could evolve from dancing (i.e., juke-related) rather than cheating (i.e, "jew"-related).

Yes, they have trigger guards. He was an idiot for wearing it stuffed into his waistband, if that's what he was doing. A Glock will not fire - no way, no how - unless the trigger is pulled. re: #10 realwest
Huh, talk about money and brain cells - just posted this on the prior thread when Charles put this thread up and sorry for the re-post:
OT and posted in spinoff links in prior thread, but you all have to read this one:
Obama raised $104 million toward election's close
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's presidential campaign raised $104 million in the weeks around Election Day, a grand finale to a successful bid that shattered fundraising records.Overall, Obama raised nearly $750 million during his odyssey to the presidency, and his spending in the eight weeks before the election vastly outpaced that of his Republican rival John McCain, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
[emphasis added, realwest]As I've said before, Obama BOUGHT this election and rented America for four years.
What I would lie to know is why bambi's campaign guys are still sending emails begging for money. Isn't that illegal?

But, supposedly, he didn't pull the trigger, he tried to grab it when it fell down his leg.
/they have trigger guards, right?
/then again, even with an external safety off, you'd still have to somehow pull the trigger

Yes, they have trigger guards. He was an idiot for wearing it stuffed into his waistband, if that's what he was doing. A Glock will not fire - no way, no how - unless the trigger is pulled. Of course, he may have grabbed it the wrong way and pulled the trigger through his pants fabric inadvertently.
This should be a BasketBall player story.
1. Don't put a gun in your waistband
2. never have a bullet in the chamber
3. Always have the Safety on
4. It's also a good idea to have a legal permit

Get any used pump shotgun at a gun show or pawn shop. It should be less than $200. Leave the stock on--much easier to aim that way. You want a 18 1/2 inch barrel. It is best to avoid the tactical black guns--prosecutors love "evil black guns"

Projection is a funny thing, as you're demonstrating. I couldn't possibly be offended by someone on a messageboard, yet you're the one who was holding on so tight to the jew explanation after untold posts telling you what it meant - yet you 'suggest' I get over it?

I prefer the pistol grip stock. It is as much a cosmetic preference as it is a practical preference. I don't like pistol-grips only on a shotgun with an 18" barrel. It's just too unweildy. If you drop the barrel back to 12-14" it's better, but that's a lot of paperwork and $200 to do legally. I'd strongly discourage shortening the barrel illegally. It takes a hacksaw and a half-hour or so to make, but it's worth up to ten long years in the Federal Men's Club.
That's one of the reasons I prefer the Winchester 1300. As a practical matter, you can't shorten the barrel down to under 18".
If money wasn't an issue, I'd prefer the Remington 1100 Tactical. It's more expensive, but it is nice. There's also Bennelli, but you are talking really pricey for what you get.

That might make a marginal difference when facing a prosecutor or jury, but I go with the "better to be tried by 12..." wisdom. The problem with duck hunting guns for home defense is that they tend to have unwieldy, long barrels.
Besides, my Mossberg 590 is for "sport and target shooting", it says so right there on my license application!

Part of that depends on the legal system where you are going to use the weapon. Around here, I wouldn't be particuarly worried about the looks of the weapon. As long as it's pretty clear cut as to who the bad guy is, you're not going to get prosecuted. Several years ago, my then-girlfriend's grandmother was beaten, robbed, strangled and left for dead by a crack addict. She was told by a deputy sherrif to buy a gun, and if the guy came back to kill him. She could then call the police and they would come clean up the mess.
And, yes, the cop was that blunt about it. They wound up catching the guy. IIRC he got 25-life, as a three-time loser.

use bird shot: less penetration beyond any target, and it lacks the inherent "evil" of any buckshot...... *
same reason to make sure the gun is a dual use, so that you were just using your sporting weapon instead of lying in wait with murderous intent, using a weapon no reasonable person would ever think of owning.
*besides: at home defense ranges (5-7 yards max inside) the shot column is going to be almost completely undispersed, so it won't really matter what you use. even the wadding will hit them.

Pistol grips are always stylish. Engraving, OTOH, is not only expensive, it takes away the beauty of the simple lines of the weapon, making it look frail or effete. Engraved guns should only be carried when you are in a tux or a low-cut ballroom gown.

Engraved guns should only be carried when you are in a tux or a low-cut ballroom gown.
Which of your guns do you usually wear with a ballroom gown?

Multiple murder wasn't proven. The Prosecution was able to raise a strong suspicion, but nothing more. If OJ hadn't pulled that stupid stunt in his Bronco, I don't know that the Prosecution would have even gotten to "reasonable suspicion". They really were pretty pathetic.

Bird shot can be seriously slowed down by heavy clothing. I wouldn't go that light.
this is Los Angeles in the PRC: what heavy clothing? besides, i specified interior ranges at 5-7 yards max. at that point it's still a solid mass of shot, not a cloud..... and the biggest worry i have is not the crook, but the cops and the local DA, should i ever have to go there, not to mention the inevitable lawsuit from the family.

Plaxico? Did a chemical tank truck go by the window of the maternity ward right before his mother gave birth, or what?
There was a point guard who played on the Univ. of Memphis basketball team in the 80's whose name was Baskerville Holmes.
His idiot mother named him that because she went into labor while watching the movie "The Hound Of The Baskervilles".
But I guess it could have been worse- She could have named him Hound Holmes.

As a die-hard Giants fan, I am sorry that Plaxico reverted to his true irresponsible self after playing hurt all last year and helping Big Blue win a championship. He's very lucky that he didn't kill himself or some other innocent bystander, but he still doesn't belong in the same Stupid Division as, say, Pacman Jones (let's see....combine an NFL player, a heavily-armed possee, $90,000 in cash, a bunch of Las Vegas strippers, some plastic garbage bags and a semi-automatic weapon...what could possibly go wrong?)
While there is no excuse for carrying unlicensed firearms, on ESPN radio yesterday, someone was recounting all of the NFL players that have been robbed or shot over the past few years which would account for why some players feel they have to pack heat. Last year, some player was robbed of $44000 in cash at gunpoint - but of course, who else but a professional athlete would walk around with $44000 in cash?

Dear Mr. Obama,
All the gun control in the world will not take guns from criminals intent on doing damage or idiots like Plex doing what idiots like Plex and OJ with money and guns tend to do. You cannot legislate everything and especially not intelligence or at least a sliver of common sense. Here is a task for you at your new job; as a start try disarming, aka Gun Control, the dudes in the NFL...the NBA...MLB and their entourages and while you are at it do not forget about the kids and un-gat or de-gun college athletes.
Not-a-Fan,
Me
