Iran Changing Tactics in Iraq?

World | Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 6:32:34 pm PST

Iran has been supplying high-explosive shaped charges to Iraqi terrorists for years, but apparently they’re now changing their tactics.

WASHINGTON – Iran is no longer actively supplying Iraqi militias with a particularly lethal kind of roadside bomb, a decision that suggests a strategic shift by the Iranian leadership, U.S. and Iraqi authorities said Thursday.

Use of the armor-piercing explosives — known as explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs — has dwindled sharply in recent months, said Army Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz, head of the Pentagon office created to counter roadside bombs in Iran and Afghanistan.

Metz estimated that U.S. forces find between 12 and 20 of the devices in Iraq each month, down from 60 to 80 earlier this year. “Someone ... has made the decision to bring them down,” Metz told reporters.

Asked if the elite Iranian Republican Guard Corps has made a deliberate choice to limit use of EFPs, Metz nodded: “I think you could draw that inference from the data.”

Iran is in need of a severe kick in the teeth....those bastards have be screwing with us for years and we have not done much to hit back. There will be a day they go to far. In my mind, supplying that type of weapon and training the cowards in Iraq how to use them was my tipping point. Someone must have realized that with the war in Iraq essentially over, there are going to be a lot of troops available to scratch the fleas of the big dog they were biting.

A state of war has existed between Iran and the United States since Nov. 4, 1979. Only one side has that figured out and it ain't us.

28 blangwort  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 6:44:12pm

Iran has realized two things:

1. They haven't achieved a thing with these explosives. We're still in Iraq.

2. We know damned well who is REALLY responsible for those roadside "IEDs." Keep it up and they may find out that we've still been fighting with one hand behind our backs.

Finally, they don't want to piss the US off too badly once they get a nuclear arsenal. We may decide to retaliate after first use, and where is the fun in that?

29 pegcity  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 6:44:22pm

No way! Even if they did have one they would never use it on our troops in Iraq, the war really would be over if that were to happen. They would save them to hit U.S. citys and as many innocent civilians as they could.
Just my opinion.

You know, it occurs to me, (and not for the first time) as I read this:

Iran is no longer actively supplying Iraqi militias with a particularly lethal kind of roadside bomb, a decision that suggests a strategic shift by the Iranian leadership, U.S. and Iraqi authorities said Thursday.

That the United States is in one country, actively fighting a war against Islamic terrorists, and another country has been actively supplying our enemy with weapons and training them to use those weapons... in a sane universe, our country would have said "excuse me for a minute" to the first country, beaten the living hell out of the second, and then gone back to whipping the terrorist's asses in the first country.

I don't know military tactics; don't know much about the military in general. But it boggles my mind that we weren't able to kick the crap out of Iran from the beginning. Eff the left, and congress, and whoever else didn't allow our military to do just that. Achmedinejad is a flipping piece of sh*t and I hope he gets what's coming to him soon. Sorry murdering bastard.

43 Adrenalyn  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 6:49:42pm

all wrong
Iran's leaders want to wipe out Israel
and don't care if we or Israel (Samson option) retaliate

Israel would be really about plain wiped out by a first nuclear strike
and killing tens of millions of Iranians would serve almost no purpose because the damage would be done
and all hell would've broken loose

that's why Iran needs a regime change sooner than later

good luck with that B. Hussein 0bama

Condolences-to you and the family. I suspect it's a combination of the drop in oil prices, the increase in US/Iraqi interceptions of Iranian Guard smugglers, and some of the unrest in Iran. Situation still developing, so we'll see what's going on eventually-probably after 20 Jan 2009.

52 Desert Dog  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 6:52:36pm

Iran has bidded their time and managed to not get bombed back to the stone age from Bush and/or Israel. If it happens now, Israel will have to do it alone. I doubt Obama will back Israel in the same way Bush would have. They are sitting there waiting for Obama to come into office and test him...you know they are. They know what happens when you test Bush....he invades your country and kills you. They are probably thinking they have another wishy-washy all talk no action poll driven spineless weasel like Clinton in Obama. The first year of "The One" is going to be harrowing......I am not looking forward to it.

Here's to the Iraniums "shifting tactics" if it means fewer EFPs in Iraq!

Just the fact that I'm reading this about Iran not "actively" (!) providing lethal weapons to our enemy and not a story about how after kicking the crap out of Iran, they found Achmedinnerwhatever in a hidey-hole, sitting in his own filth, makes me want to scream.

That would be a very difficult thing to do. One of the things that make thse such attractive weapons for our enemies is that they are relatively small in size compared to the damage that they do. To be honest, I am very surprised that we haven't seen this kind of tactic brought home to the United States. Our borders are so porus as to be laughable. It would be nothing to infiltrate a hundred or two hundred of these and the trained personnel to use them. Hell, if they did it right, they could just about get the Border Patrol to help them smuggle them in.

103 Catttt  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 7:14:26pm

This gives me a chance to mention the Buffalo.

To be specific, the Buffalo Mine Protected Route Clearing engineer vehicle.

As a result of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq (Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom) a need was identified for a series of vehicles designed to survive the explosive threats posed by the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) as well as conventional mining and ambush tactics employed against Coalition personnel. These vehicles were collectively described as MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) capable, and would be specifically built to defeat these threats.

The Buffalo, built by Force Protection Inc., is the largest of its fleet of MRAP vehicles. Classified as a category III protected vehicle, the Buffalo is officially designated as an MPRC (Mine Protected Route Clearing) vehicle, and is specifically designed to patrol roads and identify and either defeat, disarm, or remove mines and IEDs (improvised explosive devices.)

The Buffalo is a direct descendant of the South African Casspir mine protected vehicle, which was developed in the 1970 and used extensively by SA police and military forces in the 1980s. The most notable difference between the two is the presence of a second drive axel and a large, claw equipped telescopic arm fitted on the Buffalo. Like the Casspir, the Buffalo was designed to have good road speed and endurance, reduced maintenance requirements, and specifically designed to maximize passenger survivability against small arms ambushes and conventionally laid mines and explosives.

As of 2007 the Buffalo in production and service with the US military.

The (vampire romance but with black ops too) book I just read introduced me to the Buffalo. The author happened to sit next to a lady on a plane, got started talking to her, and learned about the Buffalo and the company that makes it (the lady was from that company). So the author used it as a central part of her story - terrorists trying to get their hands on a Buffalo.

This is the combination of a few things, for one better intel and interuption of their supply lines making the payoff less appealing.

Most of all I see a shift in tactics. They are moving south to blockade the gulf, and they are worried about Pakistan. Jundullah has been more active in their frontiers lately, and they've got a state next door on its way to failure that is armed with nukes. They will do what they can to keep it unstable, and they will do what they can to see us defeated in Afghanistan. So look for the EFP's to leave Iraq, and to move into Afghanistan.

And she will need to force alkaline ash fluids...ie. apple juice and cranberry juice to aid in flushing the broken particles out of her ureters.
She will be on oral analgesics for a few days as well. And she will be sore.

The Iranians aren't the only one's changing tactics.

R2D2 with a bad attitude

The accuracy of the fire, and uncanny speed with which the CROWS gun moves so quickly and deliberately, is due to something few officers expected. The guys operating these systems grew up playing video games. They developed skills in operating systems (video games) very similar to the CROWS controls. This was important, because viewing the world around the vehicle via a vidcam is not as enlightening (although a lot safer) than having your head and chest exposed to the elements, and any firepower the enemy sends your way. But experienced video gamers are skilled at whipping that screen view around, and picking up any signs of danger. Iraqis are amazed at how observant CROWS is. Iraqis tend to just wrote this off as another example of American "magic."

Many Iraqis, especially the bad guys, get distressed while watching a CROWS turret being exercised by some video game addict inside the vehicle. That's because the most noticeable part of CROWS, as it swivels and "looks" around, is the machine-gun. Many Iraqis don't even recognize the vidcam and other sensors. They think the machine-gun is, well, sort of R2D2 with a bad attitude and a license to kill.

That's one of the problems with registration. All they have to do, once they've got you on that hook, is keep restricting who can get a weapon legally, and how much it will cost them. If there are any fully-transferable M-249s they are worth a stone fortune. I've never seen one of them.

That is the tactic I expect the Obama Administration to follow. They aren't outlawing all guns, just the ugly, scary guns. And the ones that are too small, or are too large. I don't know that Obama will even have to wait for Congress to pass any new laws. Clinton declared three types of 12 ga shotguns to be destructive devices, and gave everyone with them something like ninty days to either register them or get rid of them.

Devil's advocate here: Is it possible that they are doing this because Obama was elected, and they hope if there is relative calm in Iraq for a year or so, he will make good on his promise to remove all US troops within 16 months, and then the Iranians can move in and take over the Shia parts of Iraq?

You've made a very good point, RJ. Money is not the issue; the cost of EFPs is minor compared to being able to attack the Great Satan. Many conservative commentators have said," give them a date for withdrawal, and the enemy will bide its time".
If the Shia ally with Iran fully, civil war against the Sunnis would be the obvious choice to consolidate control of Iraq's oil. Great leverage.

Save anything that she passes that ends up in the filter, and bring it back to her Nephrologist/Urologist...they'll do a biospy and will be able to detect the chemical composition of the calyx and then they can modify her diet to exclude those components so she does not develop more....

OFA stands for Obama For America

OFA 2.0 Memo:

Dear Volunteer/Team Leader:

I wanted to be the first to share some of the exciting things that I've learned about how this movement of change will look going forward.

The vision for this organization comes directly from President-Elect Obama:

"We won because the American people mobilized for change. It was really people at a grassroots level who carried our campaign financially, who carried it organizationally, and we don't want that to dissipate."

The organization will operate on these core organizing principles
• Respect. Empower. Include.
• A special emphasis on super volunteers and team leaders/coordinators who formed the core of our campaign organization.
• Organizing training and development for staff and volunteers at all levels.

MISSION:
The organization will have paid organizers on the ground nationwide, and they will focus on strengthening volunteer leadership.

The organization's goals will be to promote:
• Legislative issue organizing to support President-elect Obama's agenda.
• Electoral organizing
• Civic engagement
• Promote two-way communication between the Administration and grassroots.

In order to accomplish these goals, we will:
• Expand the existing grassroots organization.
• Directly lobby members of Congress and other elected officials.
• Work to win local elections

PROCESS:
• This organization is its own transition, parallel to the structure of the administration.
• In President-elect Obama's words, we are moving forward with "deliberate haste."
• The process is open and transparent, as we are asking for feedback from all levels and stakeholders.
• There isn't a specific timeline or date set for the organization's official launch.

FEEDBACK:
So far, we have received feedback from:
• Over 500,000 Volunteer Surveys
• Almost 500 Field Organizer Surveys
• Almost 100 Regional Field Director Surveys
• 180 conference calls with over 1,000 organizers
• Conversations with allied organizations
• Listserv e-mails within the My.BO community
• National "Organizing for Change" Legacy Conference with over 300 attendees

ACTION STEPS:
There is still work to be done in the short term:
• Submit thoughts, ideas, and feedback organizingforchange@gmail.com
• Host/attend a "Change is Coming" House Meeting. *
• Plan and organize a Civic Engagement Project with your neighborhood team.
• Research the issues facing your community on a local, state, and federal level. Know your elected officials contact information and backgrounds.
• Staff, who have returned to their hometown, could help this organization take a huge step forward by hosting or attending a house meeting in their own neighborhood. *

* [Link: my.barackobama.com...] Click on “Before your event” tab to download the materials for your House Meeting.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

The Frightening Flight To The Fringe

This has led to Israeli extremists getting more violent. This is most visible with the 300,000 Jewish settlers, who have established about a hundred communities in the West Bank, and are determined to drive the Arabs out of the area, which they believe to be part of "Greater Israel." This does not have popular support among a majority of Israelis, but the settlers and "Greater Israel" fans are carrying out more attacks on Palestinians and trying to terrorize the Arabs in the West Bank. This is becoming an embarrassment for Israel, although the settlers point out that, no matter what you do, the Palestinians will never accept Israel. But the increased settler violence has forced the government to use more force to contain the more radical and out-of-control settlers. Since this sort of thing tends to make some of the radicals more radical, the prospect of Jewish terrorists becomes more of a reality. Already, the government is working on how to protect senior officials from Jewish radical assassins.

Actually the larger stones are more easily shattered with lithotripsy.
They are also easier to pass through the ureters when shattered.
You'll be looking for pieces smaller than the size of the tip head of a ball point pen. They may be green gray, yellowish , blackish or white. Just save with a tongue blade anything that is solid that she voids in the sterile container that they send her home with.

Diabetes complicates venous blood flow in your whole body. It's why diabetics have such a difficult time with healing and tissue repair if injury occurs. So yes, in severe DM Type II, Insulin dependent cases, the kidneys can be subject to poor return flow of blood and cause venous stagnation in the loop of henle in which case the chemicals are not flushed as easily into her ureters. It could be a factor in her stone development.

Far-right Belgian party says invited to Jerusalem meet

The leader of the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang party said Thursday that MK Aryeh Eldad has invited him to an anti-Jihad conference in Jerusalem next year, though Eldad denies this.

According to Filip Dewinter, Eldad invited him to an event scheduled for March. The conference was planned as a follow-up event to an anti-Jihad summit which Professor Eldad is expected to open on Sunday in the capital.

Queried about this, Eldad's office wrote: "No follow-up conference is currently planned." The leader of Flanders' Jewish community, Eli Ringer, told Haaretz that should Vlaams Belang visit Jerusalem, "there will be a right mess because it will break the Jewish boycott of this problematic and xenophobic entity."

So now VB is outright lying. Nice.

I hope that one is wrong. Iranian missiles and small boats could shut the straits down for weeks till they were evicted. The result would be devastating to trade.

The Iranian navy is a joke as is most of Iran's forces. Weekly the Iranians publish they have a new and superior weapons system and all we see is either junk or "vapor-weapons" that do not exist. The only ones impressed by the Iranian military are their citizens and western media. Where the Iranians excel at are terrorism and propaganda. Iranian nukes will make this a whole new ballgame mates!

Auto Bailout Bill Collapses in Senate Despite Intense Negotiations

A deal on $14 billion in aid to Detroit's Big Three automakers fell apart Thursday night in the Senate despite intense negotiations on Capitol Hill between lawmakers, union officials and representatives from the three companies.

Earlier in the evening, the talks appeared to have produced a breakthrough, with Democratic leaders "hopeful" that an agreement had been reached that would be acceptable to Senate Republicans, who have resisted the aid package. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid came back later to report the effort had failed, adding he was "terribly disappointed."

Republicans, after reviewing the latest version of the proposal in a closed-door meeting, balked at giving automaker federal aid unless their powerful union agreed to slash wages next year to bring them into line with those of Japanese carmakers.

Republican Sen. George V. Voinovich of Ohio, a strong bailout supporter, said the United Auto Workers was willing to make the cuts, but not until 2011.

So I wondered about that. I think it's because my parents, when they went sneaking out of the house at 2 am, they had a roll of toilet paper
and an intent to do a little exterior decorating.

My sisters weren't planning anything so innocent. I think my parents just got blindsided, as well as being intentionally blind. Who wants to believe anything bad about their own child?

But here's to Mom & Dad, they did what they had to do, opened their eyes, got the help they needed, and hung in there by their fingernails, and everybody's doing much better.

A few ships sunk in the Straits of Hormuz or the Red Sea would shoot prices back to $150 a gallon. It would also let the mullahs see what Barry would do in a crisis.

Back Iran's play in the Gulf or Red Sea with a succesful nuke test, and it's whole new ball game.

The price of oil has collapsed, so funding for such murderous bullshit has to be cut; C.) The surge worked, and daily life is slowly but surely getting better for everyday Iraqis, even the Iraqi army and police have accepted friendship and training from the U.S. military to a large degree in a lot of places in Iraq; and D.) Congrats to our senators, at least they recognize we are throwing the money away and the big three will not survive unless some drastic changes are made in union wages to the workers. "Republican Sen. George V. Voinovich of Ohio, a strong bailout supporter, said the United Auto Workers was willing to make the cuts, but not until 2011." This is not a realistic time-frame to the taxpayers who are going to be footing the bill. The other thing is that corporate officers are making unrealistic salaries especially in light of their poor decisions that lead them into this mess when the economy slowed. No one begrudges an executive their pay but the excesses of the golden parachutes and huge salaries that surpass the major stockholders earnings are a sham mates.

This is happening because A.) Obama got elected, and he's all about appeasement, so they're fronting less violence, waiting for Obama's sit-down talk and "Peace In Our Time" moment to do something dastardly; B.) The price of oil has collapsed, so funding for such murderous bullshit has to be cut; C.) The surge worked, and daily life is slowly but surely getting better for everyday Iraqis, even the Iraqi army and police have accepted friendship and training from the U.S. military to a large degree in a lot of places in Iraq; and D.) Ramadan is upon us, maybe the crazed islamists really want to maybe take a break for religious reasons. I'll bet that letter D is false, after all, Islam is the "Religion of Peace."

December 7, 2008: While the population, largely unhappy with three decades of religious dictatorship, is not rebellious, it is becoming a lot more unruly. The lifestyle police continue to struggle against women dressing provocatively (that is, by modest Western standards), illegal (locally made) alcohol consumption, people who do not pray, and Internet users who say what they think. The women, drinkers, impious and bloggers are being arrested, in selective cases, to try and intimidate everyone else. But it isn't working, and never has. The people become bolder and more unruly.

Iran is attempting to censor what the 21 million Iranian web users can access. Using China as a model, Iran is importing special software and training "Internet Police" to make it all work. Iran is particularly incensed with bloggers, and has accused some of them of being spies. Iran is particularly angry about Iranian bloggers that point out the reality of the armed forces, and the incompetence of civil servants. The military is generally a sham, with poor equipment, training and leadership. This is very contrary to the government propaganda, which regularly announces new weapons (which are never actually seen in action) and military exercises (which are mainly propaganda events, with little training value..

If this dangerous world we live in interests you, Strategy Page is a good spot to bookmark.

If you turn on C-SPAN2 right now, you'll be able to see the Senate vote on the auto bailout bill, which appears set to fail . Negotiations between Republicans and Democrats were apparently very close to a deal. According to Bob Corker (R-TN) speaking as I type, "three words" separate the two sides on the deal, but an agreement could not be reached. Hence, when it goes to vote in the next few minutes, it is likely to fail Chris Dodd, visibly upset, preceded Corker on the floor. Stay tuned.

Okay, may as well liveblog the remainder of the proceedings. Richard Shelby spoke briefly, basically saying he's voting no.

The site, which has 51 members, contains a link to The Scots Year 12 Boys, 2008, and The Scots College networks, and is administered by Scots students.

Personally, I think that you should have a positive defense for homicide if the bastard needs killing. Convince the jury that he deserved it, and you can walk. That does happen occasionally. I know of a situation where a guy smoked a couple of bikers, and walked on it. Closer to home, one of my exs grandmother was nearly murdered. The cops told us to get a gun, and if the bastard came back we should waste him and then call them to come clean the mess up.

That wasn't in curious circumlocutions or code. That was straight up what the Deputy told us to do. They caught the SOB. He's serving 25 to life in the Brushy Mountain State Men's Club.

Major and drastic changes have to be made to address these deficiencies and of course neither of the parties are willing to change their business model. Toyota execs make a heck of lot less and have produced a business plan that works and a quality product.

Interesting you mention the unruly factor of Iranian society. I've done some research into the skiing and snowboarding scene in Iran. People have been skiing in Iran for almost 40 years. But during Ayatollah Khomeni's reign of terror, skiing took a huge backseat. The mullahs closed the ski areas in Iran in 1979 and they stayed closed for well over a decade, because the mullahs thought that skiing was too Western and decadent. Bowing to pressure from that more unruly side of Iran's population you speak of, skiing can now be enjoyed in Iran, though the lift lines are segregated (men in one line, women in another) and the resort areas and faciities are pretty darned outdated. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure the ski trails themselves are integrated, I would think it would be impossible to segregate a ski slope based on sex. The Iranian government have taken notice of the looser attitude among the patrons of the ski areas and have been arresting more young people for things like alcohol, Western music, co-mingling and cavorting with the opposite sex, and foul language. That's why I think more people in Iran should ski! If Iran needs anything, it's alcohol, Western music, co-mingling with the opposite sex, and foul language, and skiing is an excellent facilitator for those things. I should know, I'm the teleskiguy...

You sure we haven't been running spec. ops to stem the tide across that border?

I lived on that border on the Iran side. It's an imaginary border, donkeys, camel trains, people cross both ways all the time. The tribes don't recognize the border, they just know family is over there, and they've been using those routes since before Cyrus was King. Plus, it's not like the Great Plains, the Zagros Mountains run for much of it. It's rugged terrain, and you'd have to put men in every single canyon, valley, and on every ridge to secure it.

It's not that simple.

Do we know why it did (not that I mind, ya understand)?

It boiled down to the Republicans saying that the workers needed to take pay cuts to bring them into line with Japanese auto workers, and the unions saying they wouldn't even consider that until 2011.

Since a lack of agreement with the Republicans basically means they'll filibuster the bill until it dies, that killed it.

Here's the detailed story.

re: #358 sattv4u2

All the manufactures pretty much use the same suppliers.

Not true. On the whole domestic manufacturers utilize far more domestic parts plants then do the transplants. Some, (but not all of the transplants) import powertrains and most other major components to their assembly plants. Vehicle assembly is a small part of the total cost of a car, maybe 20 or 25 labor-hours depending on the content and there isn't much of a gap between the domestic and transplant factories in that metric at all. Even at a high-cost UAW plant, the cost gap for assembly labor is only a few hundred dollars per car. A bigger piece of the cost-gap pie is the cost for the hundreds of thousands of pension checks the big three sends to retirees all over the country every month. The transplants don't have many American retirees if at all. That metric accounts for over a thousand dollars per car.

If for no other reason, it makes sense to keep them afloat so they don't renege on all those pensions, thereby dumping them all into the fed's hands. Forget the platitudes, do a business case study on the two options.

That said, I do think that management needs to change to effect real change in the way they do business. Detroiters ran Matt Millen out of town, and he wasn't guilty of incompetence on anywhere near the scale that we have seen from automotive executives.

Hey LoFlyer - some LGFer - maybe you? - posted out here this week that both Honda (or Toyota) had the same gross income, which surprised the heck out of me, but that GM lost BIG MONEY on that gross, while the other car company made a very decent profit.
It seems to me that a LOT of this shit can be laid at the feet of the UAW, but let's not leave out the management of the Big 3 (or at least GM and Chrysler- Ford was looking only for a line of credit, not goverment money now) and the Boards of Directors - they share in the responsibility here, too.

They've got Betty Page pinups on the walls of the tattoo studio I go to. I had no idea she was so old.

It wasn't until the late '60s/early '70s when her pictures became publicly acceptable.

Here's the last known picture of her, taken in 2003 (age 80). She's actually quite good looking at 80!

It does sound complicated. But if these EFPs didn't come from Iran, where did they come from?

Yes the Govt is still operating-but their union FORBIDS firing an employee.

Oh now thats just not true. UAW members get fired from factories for any number of offenses, mostly relating to poor attendance. One unexcused absence per month will get one fired within a year. Occasionally they get their job back during negotiations if they have friends high up in the union, but by and large the slackers are gone for good once they get fired.

No.

Your first post on the subject:

If the US and the current Commander-in-Chief has known about this for years, why the hell wasn't anything done about it? WHY!

I was addressing the tactical why.

The strategic why is a bigger question. The (D)s and left have gone apeshit over Iraq. Pelosi and Reid would draw up impeachment documents faster than you can say EFP if GWB struck Iran with out overwhelming clear and presausive evidence.

You want to vent on someone. Vent on Pelosi, Reid, Murtha et. al.

You have to understand that Bettie Page was doing something that was considered unspeakable! I remember people warning us about going into Afghanistan too - the terrain is too mountanous, the terrain too unforgiving, the Mujhadeen have vast networks of tunnels, they beat the then mighty SOVIET ARMY over a 10 year time span and we took Afghanistan in what - 10 weeks? And Tora-Bora is about as rough a terrain as you'll find anywhere along the boundry "line" between Iran and Iraq. WE should have done something more than we did.

447 JohnAdams  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:58:35pm

Appreciate the sentiments of people not wanting Govt to LOAN money to the U.S. Auto industry. But in light of the fact that they send hundreds of billions to banks that CRASHED the entire world financial markets, without condition, with complicity in their failure directly from the Govt., I am not stunned that they again have it exactly wrong. They excuse the morons on Wall Street and make a whipping boy of the last industry in this country that can actually MAKE things, especially tanks, trucks, and airplanes (see how the Arsenal of Democracy cranked up to arm the world in WWII). D'ya think there is a possibility we might need that kind of muscle anywhere in the near future, given the state of things?

In this harrowing economic environment, pushing these companies and the MILLIONS they employ to the brink is like playing with matches in a nitro-glycerine factory. These companies are guilty of many sins in the past, but they have reformed tremendously and are very likely to make a big rebound when the economy rebounds and pent-up market demand asks for millions of new cars. Not loaning them money now puts the entire country at great risk that could lose mega-billions soon down the road.

Again, aside from mismanagement of the past, the biggest reason they are even asking for the money is that they can't get loans from the private sector because the Govt and Wall Street fucked up! A big reason the Japanese companies have been able to stay healthy in the last five years is that their government works with them. Ours fucks with us. We've got idiots in California screwing our own biggest industry with ridiculous cafe standards and suck-ups to "Global Warming" mythology that cost hundreds of billions of dollars and many years of R&D to react toward, with virtually no lead-time or planning.

No fan of the UAW, especially in its past, but they have made major concessions, more of which are to come on the books in '09. For more debunking of the many myths surrounding the US auto industry, see what an actual expert and insider says here.

That is true. The question is, just what is the problem. I think on the whole its more about management than the union. Well

I do think that management needs to change to effect real change in the way they do business. Detroiters ran Matt Millen out of town, and he wasn't guilty of incompetence on anywhere near the scale that we have seen from automotive executives.

I'd sure agree with you on that, but the UAW has been far too greedy for far too long (e.g., the "jobs Bank" where laid off workers were paid what - 80% of their salary? - until they found new jobs? The statistics I've read show a disparity of the Big 3 to the "foreign 3" in labor costs of almost two to one. Kinda hard to compete for profit when you're facing that kind of overhead.

re: #394 LoFlyer

The foreign car manufactures are seeing the same slowdown in sales as Detroit and they are laying off employees and cutting production to maintain profitability. Detroit cannot do the same for a variety of reasons; the unions, the business model of three to five divisions building the same car under different names and the 20,000 franchised dealerships. Major and drastic changes have to be made to address these deficiencies and of course neither of the parties are willing to change their business model. Toyota execs make a heck of lot less and have produced a business plan that works and a quality product.
The big three will never admit that their crappy treatment of employees during the twenties and thirties gave birth to the unions that now wield far too much power and are corrupt to boot.

Here's a good example of "Sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind."

Another example: Henry Ford's antisemitism in the 1920s led my entire family to boycott Ford's products all the way into the 1990s.

The statistics I've read show a disparity of the Big 3 to the "foreign 3" in labor costs of almost two to one.

The biggest chunk of that disparity is in pension costs. The transplants don't have any pensions to speak of. I find it strange that so many conservatives think the best path forward is to push the domestics is to dump their pensions into the Fed's hands. Like it or not, thats what will happen. Like I say, do a business case on the two alternatives. One is much cheaper than the other.
