Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah!

While St. Nick is a one person operation, Hannukah Harry is looking for franchisees who will help spread the gelt and joy to the mishpocha. /

I'm wrapping some gifts playing Hawaiian Xmas music with me wifey.

She gave me a bottle of rare tequila last night, and the Reidel glass still smells of the ethereal spirit.

I feel very Christmassy right now.

"Christmas comes but once a year,
so you better cash in while the snow is falling,
that's opportunity calling you, (Jingle Bells a rattan-tada-too!)

Rub your hands, December's here
what a wonderful time to be glad and merry
just so you're mercenary too..."

Even worse, a man dressed as a Santa opened fire in a home, which subsequently caught fire - killing 3 people.

The gunman arrived at the party late Wednesday and immediately opened fire with a handgun, Buchanan said. Witnesses told police that the man took off the Santa suit and left the scene in street clothes.

Buchanan says three bodies were found after the fire was put out. He could not say how the fire started or how the three people died.

Buchanan said three other people were injured. A woman in her 20s and an 8-year-old girl had gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening, and a third person had a broken ankle.

Merry Christmas Lizards and Lizardettes', from a sunny and dry south central Pa. I was hoping for snow, but this beats the hell out of sleet and rain. Did everyone get what they wanted, or at least most of what you wanted?

We're watching A Christmas Story on TV, and putting music on my daughter's new iPod Shuffle. Turnip cresselly, broiled mushrooms, cheese straws and baked apple pudding all feature in the Victorian notes.

Sales of the book, which is being published by the university, will help fund research into, and the publication of, Mr Darwin's letters.

Yup, it just never got any better.
When my daughter was little, I drove to hell & gone to get a Battery operated Barbie Car for Christmas.
I hid it in my office at home , so that would be the last gift.
We waited for her by the tree having coffee, so that she could open the other gifts first.
She came charging down the stairs past us right into the office.
The best laid plans..............

I have a question. With Christmas you see displays all over the place with penguins in them. What the heck do penguins have to do with Christmas? They don't live at the north pole. Most penguins are indigenous to the tropics and the remainder live in the Antarctic, the south pole not the north. Somehow this really ticks me off. Maybe it was that stupid Coke commercial years ago with the polar bear and the penguins?

It's indeed a very nice Christmas present to Christians living in Iraq. Guess that the Iraqis have started figuring out the religious tolerance thing. Still, the insurgents are busy trying to kill and maim people, but they can't overcome the tide of history and are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

In a similar vein, Cory Booker, mayor of Newark NJ delivered quite a nice Christmas present to that city - he's cut the murder rate in the city by 50%.

Columbia River Knife and Tool. They manufacture pretty decent knives for reasonable prices. You can get nicer knives, but you will be paying a lot of money for them. For example, I'd love to buy a microtech OTF switchblade, but they start at $300 and just go up from there. Maybe if I win the Lotto I could afford to drop that kind of cash on a knife that I can't carry (carrying switchblades is a felony in Tennesee), but right now, all I can do is look.

Most atheists celebrate Christmas. It's not like Christians started Christmas or anything. It's been around for more than 5,000 years. Just because Christians begrudgingly adopted it relatively late and changed the name doesn't mean that only they get to celebrate it.

Merry Christmas!

Here's the story of this year's Christmas;

Its the first one without Big Dog, who always unwrapped the gifts, and then loved to tear the wrapping paper to bits.
It wasn't proper Christmas without the floor covered in bits of paper.
Today was a bit subdued - and I tidied up.

Madame had a box of doggie chocolate Father Christmasses.
I was just settling down when I saw her dive into the wastepaper basket. she's never done that before, not even as a puppy!
She got the wrapping paper from her gift out - and tore it into little pieces ... all over the floor. It was as if she meant to say, hey, what about it, its Christmas - paper on the floor, no?
I sooo had to laugh!
She got another chocolate Father Christmas for her efforts ... and I'm still grinning, writing about it!

It's a nice gesture, but perhaps an empty one.

At Christmas, Iraq Christians eye uncertain future.

Indeed it could be an empty gesture, but they are making the effort, which is more than one could say just a few years ago. It's also interesting that we're talking about quotas and set-asides of seats in the Parliament for religious minorities rather than elections based on the popular vote. I understand the reason for the quotas - to avoid the Shi'ite majority from completely overwhelming the process, but those numbers will probably be adjusted over time. It's not a perfect system by any stretch, and the Christian community will have to work hard to protect what they have and to increase any numbers in the Parliament, but they have a seat at the table.

That's more than can be said elsewhere.

Hey, there! Merry Christmas and boxing day to you!

Hi {rw}!

Its been a grey Christmas, as predicted, but laughter and meeting nice people in the park, and you and all Lizards here makes for a lovely warm and happy Christmas indeed!

Enjoy your Christmas Day!

I've lived here 40 years, and this is the first white Christmas I can remember, so I'll take it!

I love your quote about the Yugo on the info super hwy. We watched a movie the other night called 'Drowning Mona' that had Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, and Jamie Lee Curtis in it. The funniest thing about the movie was just about EVERYONE drove a Yugo, and they all had personalized license plates!

Merry WHITE Christmas from a fellow Puget Sounder...and to all the other Lizards, too!

Have you been unable to leave your residence since the snow started falling? I have, and I am losing what little sanity I had. ;)

Nope, not today. But it DOES have something to do with our saving their asses in Desert I. Thanks for the repayment there.
BTW, didja know that the Magic Kingdom tried to get President Bush (the first) to not allow Jewish American Soldiers to serve in Saudi Arabia? President Bush said, much more politely than I, "fuck off, they are AMERICAN TROOPS".

We also had some serious issues about women when they went off base. For some time they could not leave the bases without a male escort and full burkha. That went away real fast. That was back in the 80s.

Well it's been grand y'all but Mom's saying something about Christmas dinner so I'm out of here.
I do hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hannuka, Happy Holidays and that I get the chance to see you all down the road.

But before leaving (at least for a while) I just want to repeat something I said earlier on the DT: I wish to express my tremendous gratitude and thanks to all American Armed Forces, wherever they may be, and to all of their families who must go through this Holiday Season without them. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.

Right after the Tsunami , I believe that it was Indonesia would not allow the Infidel Marines that were acting as aid workers sleep on Muslim soil.
They had to return to the ships at night. I might be wrong about Indonesia.

Oh yeah....4WD baby! I got stuck on South Hill, Puyallup last Thursday when the first big storm hit, took me over an hour to go 9 miles, mainly because of the other traffic. In fact, while I was going downhill, I passed a cop going UPHILL, stuck, putting chains on and holding up all the other traffic. My truck didn't break loose once. I get very nervous driving in the snow, but not in this rig (Chevy Silverado 1 ton). Plus, since we work at home, my commute takes all of 10 seconds....

Wasn't that one of the greatest Christmas presents EVER, Opnion? A Daisy BB gun, and two packs of golden copper BBs...

I may have posted this earlier, but I got my youngest a BB Gun last year. This true story is from Early November:

So I come home from work yesterday to find the youngest son (age 13) pacing in the kitchen with his hands clasped in a prayer position in front of his chest.

This usually indicates trouble. As in, he is in trouble. The last time he was this way involved a girl, a lunchbox and a one week bus detention.

Before I could even ask, he Blurbs "I feel really bad, Dad, I screwed up."

It seems the BB Gun required reloading. The box spilled, the BBs were every where. But it was where he was reloading the gun. Not on the deck. Not in the garage or basement, no, the boy wonder decides to reload over the sink, on the side with the garbage disposal.

He tells me, in a panic, he doesn't know what to do to get the BBs out of the disposal, so he turned it on.....

He said, "BBs were flying out and hitting every where. I watched them come out and I was conflicted -- on the one hand, I thought it was really cool, but I also knew that that was a really bad idea, and I was probably dead."

So, other than they have fresh legs and can go into the basement to get drinks from the second fridge,

Why do we have kids?

A small miracle from the hermit cave:

A week ago, I was staring down a situation where I had about $60 to make it until Jan 10th - my next payday.

In the 15 possible work days for December, I had lost 6 -- 3 to illness and 3 to snow. I knew the January check would just cover January bills. In the meantime, I still needed to pay for rent, prescriptions and food.

I was ready to ask my landlords to allow me to pay Jan rent in increments over the next few months, knowing it would still be tight....I make less than $20K/year.

Then, yesterday, I got the mail. In two envelopes were tax refund checks from the IRS total - $470 (I finally caught up a few months ago after getting behind 2 years and had no idea if or when checks would happen).

All of the sudden, I had enough for rent with a little to spare. This is INDEED a time of miracles.

Whatever one may think about faith....I personally don't think it makes miracles happen so much as it offers you a grateful heart when they do happen.

Merry Christmas, Lizardia!

Hermit - that kind of story doesn't surprise me at all. Sometimes miracles happen in big ways, like when a tumor disappears and baffles the doctors. Sometimes they come quietly without much fanfare, like yours. We must not keep quiet about such things, though. Thank you for sharing that story. I pray 2009 brings you good health and full paychecks!

332 IMissReagan  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 9:41:06pm

Merry Christmas to all the lizards out there. A Christmas poem for the men and women serving in our military as well as those of our allies.

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."
