As Israeli forces prepare to enter Gaza on land, and warplanes continue to attack Hamas targets from the air, the Foreign Minister of Egypt is blaming … Hamas?

In Response to Gaza Offensive, Syrian and Hamas Media Lambast Egypt, Saudi Arabia

The Syrian and Hamas media have responded to the Gaza attack with harsh criticism against Egypt and Saudi Arabia. An editorial in the Syrian website [Link: www.champress.net...] accused the Syrian and Saudi leaders of collaborating with Israel in the spilling of Palestinian blood. The Syrian government daily Teshreen stated in an editorial that "certain Arab leaders" regarded Israel as a strategic ally and were helping it to annihilate the resistance movements in Palestine and Lebanon. Associates of Hamas leader Mahmoud Al-Zahhar accused Egypt of collaborating with Israel in deceiving the Hamas in Gaza.

I doubt any big actor in the region really wants another war they're destined to lose. They're all for egging the little guy on and funneling them money, but if it came down to real, war level blows, Gaza would be left with it's pants down, mooning the might of the Israel army all alone.

13 Nevergiveup  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 9:05:13am

Not really. Egypt hates Hamas and doesn't need any instability on its border, like all the rabble that just punched holes in it's fence with Egypt forcing the Egyptian police to fire on them. No lost love here. Never has been Never will be. Nothing new to see here, just keep moving please.

They should have spoken up sooner.

15 dmandman  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 9:06:19am

Egypt can't let Gaza go (on paper)...Hamas is attempting to annex it. Simple, once the Egyptian government allows secession of a province what's to prevent another province from suddenly deciding what do we need Cairo for anyways. "Egypt" as we know it today is an artificial construct by agreement of the great powers (which included a nominally Islamic one) of the early 20th Century, as is all of Africa and the Middle East. Look at the other countries of Africa and that's what Egypt is afraid of becoming.

Violent protests at Israeli Embassy in London

Violent confrontations broke out at the Israeli Embassy in London today as up to 1,500 protesters against Israel's Gaza campaign gathered in a vociferous demonstration.

Campaign supporters, Palestinians and British Muslims stood on the pavement of High Street Kensington, west London, and chanted in unison: “Five, six, seven, eight - Israel is a terror state.”

Riot police were brought in to control the crowd, some of whom turned violent. Witnesses said some protestors were forcibly removed and others were seen with bloodied faces as violence erupted.

One campaigner was seen throwing a bag and what appeared to be a book over some gates towards the embassy and another was seen throwing red liquid. Officers retreated from the immediate scene as the crowds swelled, and some appeared to be trying to break through barriers to access the embassy.
...
The member of staff, who did not want to be named, added: “There were only eight officers trying to contain a protest with about 500 demonstrators.

“They are trying to break down the barriers towards the Embassy and the police can do nothing about it.

“It has been handled terribly and now they are chasing to catch up a scene which is already out of control.”

Real Ways to Stand With the People of Gaza

I want to start by thanking Daisy Cutter for the excellent diary post yesterday. for those of you who were offended by that diary ... tough cookies. Don't bother reading this one. Go to ... um... another diary entry, or read the Sunday comics, or whatever. This will just upset you.

After reading the diary entry, i joined the Bay Area Women in Black(mostly but not entirely Jewish, not all women, and not always dressed in Black) who were doing their weekly vigil in Oakland. It was helpful to have the real human interaction with people who care about peace.

Now, for those of you who see the basic injustice of the Israeli massacre of men, women and children in Gaza,we have our work cut out for us. we must remember that the Israeli military used US-supplied F-16 fighter planes to carry out the war crimes, and we have a special responsibility to act and make our voices heard. Israel has promised/threatened that what we saw yesterday is "just the beginning". So what i would like to do here is present concrete ways we can stand with the people of Gaza in solidarity and work for a just peace all can enjoy and share...

I like the third comment...

You Forgot One (0+ / 0-)

Tell them to stop shooting rockets at innocent civilians in Israel.

That would make a big difference.

Could be. There is quite a bit of resentment in Egypt toward the willingness of other Arab states to incite war with Israel, while Egypt has historically borne the brunt of actual combat. I was in Egypt when the Camp David Accords were signed in 1978. The treaty instantly met with furious condemnation and threats from the likes of Saudi Arabia. Egyptians wags commented, "Of course they are bellicose. Unlike us, they are willing to fight to the last Egyptian."

Hamas is Syria. Egypt doesn't want a proxy invasion. There is a reason they keep the Gaza border closed. Syria is doing quite a bit of business with Russia. Hamas wanted an invasion. I don't know why. The fact that there is no real outcry worries me. The best thing about this action is that Israel did not give the usual suspects time to set the propaganda wheels in motion.

Encourage protests in your neighborhood. That way the authorities can find out who the players are.

Iran leader orders Muslims to defend Palestinians

Iran's Supreme Leader issued a religious decree to Muslims around the world on Sunday, ordering them to defend Palestinians in Gaza against Israeli attacks "in any way possible", state television reported.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also declared Monday a day of public mourning in Iran after Israel killed more than 280 Palestinians in two days of air strikes on Gaza.

"All Palestinian combatants and all the Islamic world's pious people are obliged to defend the defenceless women, children and people in Gaza in any way possible," Khamenei said.

"Whoever is killed in this legitimate defence, is considered a martyr," he said in a statement.

Three arrested at Israeli embassy protest

LONDON (AFP) — Police arrested three people after a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in London over the bombardment of the Gaza Strip turned violent Sunday.

Traffic in Kensington district where the embassy is located was brought to a halt by hundreds of protesters -- organisers estimated 3,000, while police put the figure at 700.

Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and placards, shouting in unison: "Israel is a terror state!"

At one point, barriers containing the demonstrators were torn down and riot police were deployed to restore order -- with several protesters forcibly removed.

As teams of police officers attempted to push protesters away from the embassy, some demonstrators attempted to retaliate by pushing back and throwing placards at police.

This is the most ancient emnity of the mideast kicking in. Arabs vs. Iranians, Persians vs. the Arabs, Shia vs Sunni.

Heads are turning and worries are mounting now that it seems Iran will get the bomb without a bombing first, and now that they've moved units to enact the Straits of Hormuz gambit again.

I think this is largely what is causing the unusual phenomenon of partially-balanced reporting this time around.

If the Arab states other factions involved had been more unified in their condemnation of Israel, and had the Gordon Brown of the UK and other US spokesmen not been as clear in their assigning blame to Hamas... well, let's just say I think it'd be 2006 all over again.

There are some indications that the Israeli's actually contacted the Egyptians ahead of time and warned them that this might happen -- which, if true, is mighty impressive if you ask me.

I think that needs to be amended to 'radical Islam has a death wish'. To categorize all Islamic people as carbon copies of Hamas/Hezbollah/Al Qaeda is both naive and tragic.

Please explain to me how I am supposed to know the difference, person does not attend a radical mosque or just does not believe what he has heard the last 20 years (ala obambi), person stands and says that they denounce terrorism, then goes to mosque to attend a service and pray for the 19 HERO'S of 9/11. Pray tell friend how to differentiate.

Oh, the wonders of the "Back" button! Here's what I posted at the BBC "Have Your Say" site

Hamas broke the truce. Such an action is a de facto declaration of war. That Israel is taking Hamas at its word (or actions) and responding accordingly is in keeping with all traditional protocols of hostilities. To the victors go the spoils, even when they didn't start the violence but finished it.

This is cultural suicide. Raise a bunch of kids to think that it's their purpose in life to kill others and then cry when they shoot at you. They'll try to blame the Israelis for it, just like the idiots at Waco blamed the Feds for setting fire to their own ranch.

Yeah, in a perfect world, the Israelis would hit every target with perfect precision. But war is the result of an imperfect world and they unfortunately will reap what they have sown. Israel should show them no mercy. They haven't shown any to Israel so far.

So: has Obama come out with a statement against Hamas? Anyone have a pointers to his position, or did he say, "just let me eat my waffle enjoy my waves"?

"US president-elect Barack Obama is "monitoring" the deadly violence in the Gaza strip and spoke to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about the situation, his aides said Saturday.

Anderson however emphasized that "there is one president at a time," a statement Obama has said often since he was elected on November 4.

Obama also spoke by phone with Rice for about eight minutes and "discussed the situations in Gaza and in South Asia," said an aide, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In a July interview with The New York Times, Obama said he didn't think that "any country would find it acceptable to have missiles raining down on the heads of their citizens," in reference to rockets fired from Gaza into Israel.

"If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that," Obama said. "And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing."

As for talking with Hamas, the Islamist movement in control of Gaza, Obama said in the interview that it was "very hard to negotiate with a group that is not representative of a nation state, does not recognize your right to exist, has consistently used terror as a weapon, and is deeply influenced by other countries."

170 mindy1  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 6:07:03pm

While it's probably a good thing, the fact is I don't think anyone wants to deal with real palestinians, they just use them in the abstract. it's called NIMBY-they always want them else where, and do not have the room or will to deal with them. I hope this can be resolved, and I pray it will be, but I am starting to give up on that part of the world.
