On the Truce Merry-Go-Round

Ever feel like you’re on a surreal merry-go-round, watching the same events play out over and over as you circle endlessly past, to no discernible purpose or end?

Israel weighs 48-hour halt to Gaza air campaign.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Israel, under international pressure, is considering a 48-hour halt to its punishing four-day air campaign on Hamas targets in Gaza to see if Palestinian militants will stop their rocket attacks on southern Israel, Israeli officials said Tuesday. Any offer would be coupled with a threat to send in ground troops if the rocket fire continues.

Time to take a lesson from another tradition.

Heracles discovered that he could not defeat the Hydra by lopping off its heads; whenever he lopped off one, two grew in its place.

Then he discovered he could prevent this by burning the stumps before the heads grew back. The last head was immortal, so he cut it off, burned the stump, and buried the immortal head beneath a great rock.

Israeli government, take note.

The first 3 days of the shock and awe that Israel unleased really made our initial foray into Iraq we called shock and awe look weak.
These have been very effective strikes..Now is time to let them take up defensive positions and communicate to the leadership...
Make the second strike powerful..and effective..
You can mass ground troops till the cows come home...Great threat...

As someone noted yesterday, a 48 cease fire, might, might help Israel.

Hamas just won't be able to restrain themselves and will fire some rockets.

To the Cynthia "Ship of Tools" McKinney's of the world it won't make a whit of difference. But to alot of folks when Israel, shrugs and says "see" and resumes the offensive it will make a difference.

DEBKAfile - Day 4 of Israeli operation: Israel military, Shin Bet deny recommending 48-hour truce

According to earlier reports, Israeli leaders were considering a two-day truce proposal for which France is pressing. Tuesday night, Dec. 30, the IDF spokesman issued a strong denial of any such recommendation by the military or the Shin Bet.
As the rate of Hamas launchings climbed to 35 Tuesday night, Israel conducted a second round of air strikes against Hamas' smuggling tunnels on the Philadelphi border with Egypt.

Egyptian locked the Rafah crossing.
In Hamas' first public statement, a masked spokesman read out a "Jihad Letter, which said: "The sea of Gaza will run dry before Hamas surrenders" If Israeli attacks continued, he said Hamas would bring more Israeli towns under fire.
President Shimon Peres said Tuesday that the Gaza campaign would be hard and long. He praised the military's precise adherence to its plan.

93 Desert Dog  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 5:54:30pm

re: #54 jamgarr

Why is it that Israel is supposed to keep their wars under a week?

One reason is they have many enemies. If they get bogged down in Gaza, you can bet your last camel that Nasrallah will start something up in the north...Iran will be happy to supply both the northern and southern front.

And, although their army is powerful and can easily defeat any of their neighbors conventional armies, it is also a citizen army. The reserves are all from the general population. We have it easy here, our army is separate (except for the Natl Guards)...we hardly know there is a war going on here...let alone two wars. In Israel, the entire country has to go on a "war footing".

The Strategy of Hamas:

1. Shoot rockets into Israel
2. Hide behind women and children as Israel defends itself
3. Race healthy women and children to hospitals (in front of CNN cameras) to accelerate world sympathy
4. Wait for international pressure to stop Israel
5. Gather up billions of $$$ in aid sent by Western nations
6. Spend billions of $$$ in Western aid on more rockets

Repeat Step 1.

I was listening to NPR yesterday, they had interviews with Mark Regev and a Hamas spokesman. The Hamas spokesman actually said that Israeli agents are behind the rocket attacks on Israel, for the purpose of instigating conflict. His evidence: It was the only possible answer, as they had asked Palestinian groups if they were involved and they all denied it.

re: #88 jcm

As someone noted yesterday, a 48 cease fire, might, might help Israel.

Hamas just won't be able to restrain themselves and will fire some rockets.

To the Cynthia "Ship of Tools" McKinney's of the world it won't make a whit of difference. But to alot of folks when Israel, shrugs and says "see" and resumes the offensive it will make a difference.

It'd be nice if they had some special celebration planned, when they resume, but what?

The problem is, as I've been ranting hereabouts, that there really is no point as such to the entire current attack. Israel demands too little, and doesn't get that. Of course not, in negotations you never get everything you ask for, that's why you ask for more. Heck, the Islamists know that, their ridiculous demands are excessive, but apparently they understand the principle!

118 slartybartfast  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 5:59:43pm

re: #71 winston06

Olmert is a coward

I'm sure that Israel will agree to cease fire in order to rebuild their reputation in the world.

Hmmm...I wonder where I've heard that line of horse manure before?

Meanwhile, I'm sure Bibi is well aware of the OT admonition:

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

1. Shoot rockets into Israel

I agree, and this so called truce, with ground troops amassed at the border telling them that if ONE rocket is fired into Israel they will get a pass to do what they need to do. WE need to give Israel all the support we can. If they didn't deal with the scum, the scum would inbreed to the point of overpopulation and they woud be a world problem, instead of just an Israel problem.

Sad, but true. It sounds cynical, but today they hate Jews, if the succeeded in their nightmare, they would just find someone else to hate and blame their troubles on.

I do think that is why it get's so little attention by the MSM. As long as Israel does "small" wars against the whackos, they are kept in check and the rest of the world doesn't have to deal with them.

So, Israel will be forced to halt by international pressure, and said pressure will prevent them attacking within the 48 hours regardless of rocket attacks. The Gazans (sorry, but you guys elected Hamas, so separating you from the terrorists is moot) will fire all they can during the first, say, 45 hours... then stop, and tell the world they've stopped. Have You Read the Hamas Charter?

But the rest of the koskidz can't be bothered with "facts"...

I doubt any faction has a written charter (5+ / 0-)
like the one above, but I have heard specific accounts of members of Hamas that are clearly more moderate in their views than the positions expressed in that charter. Unfortunately I don't have any links, I might try and do some research later.

...

Jihad simply means "struggle" (1+ / 0-)
and there is always going to be struggle against oppression. There is the jihad of the heart against evil, the jihad of the tongue against lies and propaganda, the jihad of the mind against evil, and armed jihad against oppression.

Muslims are obligated to struggle against oppression in any of these ways, if they find themselves victimized...

Heh - I downdinged you to see it in the spy, then changed to an upding. The downding was shown, but the upding was not. Perhaps some of the down dinging is in error and corrected with an upding that does not show in the spy?

The change does show up if you click on the "ding" number in the comment box where the ding (up or down) was given.

Sheesh - did that make any sense at all?

Man, Arby's brings back memories. For one thing, the smell of the food once it gets into your polyester uniform is not only epic, it's near-permanent. I had a girlfriend that worked at one for a while, and my dog WORSHIPPED her.

I want to see Hamas hoist the white flag.

And I want to see that flag in the form of a pair of snowy underdrawers from a Hamas leader, with a bend vert (heraldic for a green streak) where said leader has shat himself in fear.

The IDF should hoist the black flag.
No quarter for Hamas.

I was talking with a co-worker today when this came on the news, and noted with despair that "every time the Israelis get close to winning, they stop." He agreed. There's a LOT of silent Americans out there who support Israel.

I don't understand this fear of winning that's affected the West, but I hope we get over it before it's too late. This wasn't just a gesture ahead of the elections, was it?

Attention...check the talking dolls you gave your kids for Christmas.

Talking doll has a surprising message — 'Islam is the light'

BEAUFORT — A local woman went to the Walmart on Robert Smalls Parkway to buy a doll for her daughters this Christmas.

What she ended up with was a Mattel Fisher-Price Toys baby doll that says “Islam is the light.” Jennifer Calandra of Burton, 28, bought the doll for her 5-year-old and 7-year-old daughters shortly after Thanksgiving.

Calandra said she thought she was going crazy when she first heard the phrase about a week after buying the toy. She exchanged the $20 doll Dec. 22 for a new one, also from Walmart, thinking it could be a malfunction in the soundtrack of coos and baby babble. The second doll said the same thing.

Calandra is not the first to hear the Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Cuddle and Coo doll say, “Islam is the light.” Reports began popping up around the country this fall. Some reports say the dolls also say, “Satan is king.”

They are resisting the truce because they want to look like big tough guys. They will wait for international pressure on Israel to force a cease fire. Either way, they need time to rearm. Rocks and bottles just don't stand up to tanks and F-16's.

"the truce" is the part I'm blank on.
From what I've seen today, "international pressure" is lightweight to nonexistent. Except for France.

What do they do about the people? How would they feed them? After the conflict dies down then what? They left Gaza once. Now the come back? Kind of a funny story behind it:

9-11 changed a lot, including at the Pagan community center in which I used to participate. Yeah, Paganism is where I found Deity. For so many who say they are the followers of the ancient gods, they seem to prefer the butterflies and forget the chilera. They seem to call upon the gods of peace, and forget there are also gods of war. For those who call to Isis for peace, they forget Sekhmet, the goddess of war. All have Their place in the pantheon.

Just starting this thread, so I don't know what others have said, but here are my thoughts:

I HOPE that the Israelis are offering the truce so that they can say they are playing ball with the esteemed Quartet (the U.S. the Yurps, the UN, and Russia). Then, when Hamas fails to stop the bottle rockets, the IDF can crash into Gaza like Bigfoot on steroids and mash the Hamas creeps into the ground.

If it were up to me, I would do maximum damage to large areas, leaving no building standing more than one inch high.

Yes, I know this challenges our very humanitarians selves to think about doing this. But I know in my heart of hearts that the Arabs will not respect the Israelis until they actually become scared of what they will do when they are angry.

re: #103 Archimedes

This is death by a thousand tiny cuts. How many years, decades, has this been going on? It's lunacy. If Israel would deal with the problem once using overwhelming force it would probably be over. Imagine if that had been done decades ago! Imagine the lives saved!

Six decades, to be precise; it started in 1948.

WTF there are still Pali "refugees" after 60 years is because no one else wants them, and the Arabs find them useful tools against Israel.

The main reason the Arab leadership is down on Hamas this time around is because Hamas is backed by Iran, and the Arabs are getting very nervous about the Persians.

If Israel got truly serious about dealing with Hamas and Hezbollah, el cubo heads would explode all over the world. This is certainly not a bad thing.

Of course, leftist opinion doesn't follow any recognizable logic. Zombie has taken numerous pictures of GLBTs carrying Palestinian flags. They support people who would kill them in a heartbeat and oppose the existence of the only country in the region where they would not be harmed. Go figure.

If Israel gives in to the whining of the international community, it's just another Mission Half Accomplished to add to the history books.

Picking at the enemy only pisses them off and gives them a chance to regroup, and come back at you even harder. Either kill them and defeat them, or don't go to war. Anything less is pointless. In fact, it's worse than pointless, because it only exacerbates an already volatile situation.

It's become a pattern, every time tiny Israel kicks major ass, they are yarded back by the opinions of people (including the US) who don't really care if Israel lives or dies. Sure, they talk a good game, ME peace process, end the fighting, two state solution, blah blah - but they really don't lose any sleep if Israel gets shelled, bombed, whatever. It's business as usual over there. It just sounds nicer to act as if they're actually concerned. Throw them some money, and tell them how to fight their wars. It's an endless pattern of non-supportive bullshit; the Mobius strip of bullshit.

Israel needs to decide if they want to survive, and stop worrying about world opinion. To continually wage little half-finished wars... is why they are constantly at war.

"under international pressure"...so I have to ask...where is the international outcry over the Taliban's killing of 14 school children by a suicide car bomber? Where's the international pressure on the Pakistanis to hand over the Mumbai masterminds?

350 dead Hamas jihadists is worth outcry from every nation on Earth but 195 dead innocents in Mumbai, India is worth...what? Crickets?

"International pressure" is, in the words of former VP John Nance Garner, not worth a "bucket of warm piss."

294 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 6:30:25pm

Israel could kill every last Hamas member in a green and black uniform and it wouldn't do much. The hatred is so ingrained in the civilian population that a new bunch of terrorists would just spring up. It's a lose-lose situation for Israel. They can kill the blatant terrorists but they are only the visible part of the problem. The real problem is societal and until the Palestinians make a conscious effort to stop hating the Jews, there will never be peace.

Actually, it translates "also" as "egalement", and "aussi" as "too".

Now, since your French appears to be fresher -
If I call someone "my dear", is it "ma chere" because I'm female, or is it "mon cher" or "ma chere" depending on the gender of the person?

i THINK that is the article that originally got me on the Posse research hunt.

What has me confused is that I don't see where there is any distinction between US Citizens/legal non-citizens and "US Persons". Frankly, if enemy combatants were inside the US, they'd be considered "US Persons" and be off limits --as I understand things. I, also frankly, feel the military should have the legal ability to go for them.

I think Israel will continue to pound the crap out of the infrastructure in the hopes that the civilian population realizes that electing a bunch of terrorists was a really bad idea. It may just be enough to help elect a Palestinian who actually wants what is best for his people. I think it's a long shot but even Palestinian civilians have a breaking point and maybe this will be it.

Actually, it translates "also" as "egalement", and "aussi" as "too".

Now, since your French appears to be fresher -
If I call someone "my dear", is it "ma chere" because I'm female, or is it "mon cher" or "ma chere" depending on the gender of the person?

In south La., the cajuns just say, "sha", with a short "a" as in "at".

410 Liechtentrager  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 6:53:13pm

There was a good editorial in the Wall Street Journal today by Brett Stephens, called "Hamas Knows One Big Thing". He made a very incisive point: the goals of Hamas and Israel are very different, and are expressed very differently, both in political and military terms. As in Lebanon in 2006, Israel's stated goal is "quiet", and is reflected in a nuanced attack posture that balances humanitarian concerns against the effectiveness of combat operations. Hamas's goal is "victory" and, ultimately, genocide. This is a very direct and simple goal, achievable so long as the enemy (Israel) provides suitable opportunities, and unconcerned with humanitarian gestures. As Stephens writes, "no ingenious conceit can disguise the fact that war offers no outcome other than victory or defeat. This is one big thing that Hamas understands, and that Israel must as well."

Any doubt as to which side has the advantage?

The modern-day efforts to found the State of Israel began in the 1880s--and from the very first, the Jews who were engaged in that endeavor had to face murderous attacks from the Arabs.

Israel has been fighting against the jihad for over 100 years.

I am Catholic, albeit, probably not the best, but I have been trying to read up on the conflicts between Islam and my religious heritage.

They are much farther removed than what has been going on in Israel for the last 60 years at least. As an outsider of the tribe looking in, I still can't fathom how anyone Jewish can think there is any ability to strike some kind of harmony between the islamic world as we know it, and their world in Israel. To me it is black and white.

I think Syria would be more than happy to funnel weapons to one or both of the aforementioned groups. I think it would be tougher for them to wage a decent battle but the terrorists have never really put up that much of a fight. Their basic strategy is to bog down as many resources as possible and turn any Israeli retaliation into a human rights violation. Either way, Israel would still have to use up vital resources to ward off strikes by H & H when they could be better used against Iran. I also don't think Dear Leader will be a friend of Israel and I wouldn't be surprised if relations get a lot more strained between us and Israel in the next 4 years.

When they want you dead, they want you dead. Daniel Pearl should be a prime example.

We have a cancer eating away at humanity. It is political correctness. Everyone is equal. No culture is inferior to another. This is a stake in the heart of western civilization.

Well said - when our elected leaders wake up to this we may have a chance.

Until then - I nominate them - the whole mess of them - for the Fiskie.

Sports Notes:

If Dark Falcon is around, he's not going to like Bears GM Angleo's comments today at his season review press conference. Translating GM-speak into english, you can count on Marinelli being hired by the Bears in some capacity, and some Asst. Coach or other taking the blame for the bad play by the team.

Angelo also does not seem to think that running backs, receivers or linebackers are important to winning. He thinks middle linebacker Urlacher is still a Pro Bowl player. Urlacher by the way was that guy you saw getting pancaked by blocking backs all year when he blitzed.

On the other hand, the Denver Bronco's fired Coach Mike Shanahan for not making it to the playoffs.

You know, this kind of thing really pisses me off. The Israeli politicians make a big show of standing firm, and then they go off and do something insanely stupid - essentially repeating the very mistakes that the Winograd Report warned about.

They're not fighting to win. They're fighting to simply bide time and hope that the rocket fire decreases. It's a fool's hope, and all that the bombings will accomplish under that scenario is some casualties on both sides, and plenty of propaganda for Hamas to crow about beating Israel; even as they're digging out of rubble for the next decade.

And now, Israel's making the same mistakes that they were being warned about six months ago.

Don't believe me?

Here's what I wrote six months ago (and it's worth repeating ad nauseum, even if the frellin' idiots in the Knesset and the Prime Minister's office don't pay attention because eventually one of them will - when the Palestinians are busy ransacking the place):

I'd say that this truce is dead and Israel should resume its operations against the terrorists along with a retightening of its restrictions on aid and items entering Gaza.

If Israel lets these incidents slide, the Palestinians will rightfully conclude that they can continue to fire on Israel at will without facing repercussions.

The terrorists will deny and evade responsibility for breaking the ceasefire, and will whine and seethe should Israel retaliate against those terrorists for attacking Israel. They will claim that it was Israel who broke the ceasefire, not them, even as there's irrefutable proof that the Palestinians broke it.

The terrorists might even point to an IDF operation that killed an Islamic Jihad terrorist as proof that Israel broke the truce. Never forget for one moment that the Palestinians have not given up on the idea of destroying Israel or attacking it at the earliest possible moment. They have simply engaged in a hudna to buy time and space to regroup and rearm.

That's the scenario that's played out right down to the way that Hamas used one of their terror ops as a pretext for launching still more terror attacks to precipitate Israel's response. Israel's response has been not much better than during the Hizbullah war, and talk of a truce only confirms that they lack the will to defeat Hamas. They're looking only for a status quo - which is a losing proposition.

I can't believe that Israelis stand for this nonsense.

Hamas starts a war, and Israel has leftists pushing an agenda that is wholly detached from reality and prevents Israel from actually winning and making Hamas and the Gazans feel the bitter sting of defeat when that is the only true way to peace. *shaking head*

Democracies get the government they deserve. With the election of Hamas, Palestine now has to operate as a government, with the appropriate accountability.

If the IDF wants to give a 48 hour reprieve to appease the moonbats, let them. When Hamas screws up, they must be held accountable, even if it means being driven from power.

We all hated seeing Hamas win that election, but it did indeed make this so-called state of "Palestine" accountable. Their terrorist militants are now part of a quasi-national army.

And remember, Hitler was elected, too.

Israel not only gets to play the role of the reasonable peace partner, it has an excuse to invade with ground troops when Hamas refuses to accept the truce.

All these truces are just breathers for Hamas. A chance to resupply, to catch up on sleep and work out fresh firing points.

The tunnels need work. The leadership needs to reconstitute its communications network and at least issue fresh contingency orders for when communications go down again.

Last minute preparations for the ground war must be made.

(Oh, I forgot. Hamas wants peace and will cease firing the rockets as soon as Israel stops blockading the import of smallpox, plutonium, and other necessary medical and energy supplies to Gaza.)

527 NY Nana  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 10:08:33pm

I had posted this in the spinoffs:

Official: Israel won't accept 'humanitarian' pause

A state official said Tuesday night that "Israel mustn't talk of a ceasefire for humanitarian needs. This expression is unacceptable to us, as medications, blood and basic commodities have already been transferred to the Gaza Strip."

The official spoke after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert placed an embargo on the resolutions of his four-hour meeting with Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin and other defense officials on ways to continue the military operation in Gaza.

Sources in Jerusalem made it clear after the meeting that the French definition for the ceasefire, as suggested by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner to Defense Minister Barak, was unacceptable. They added, however, that a ceasefire would be possible if Hamas were to stop firing rockets towards Israel.

"At the end of the day, the operation is aimed at restoring peace in the south. If this is honored, we will consider how to proceed," a state official said.

Some 40 Qassam rockets and Grad missiles were fired at the western Negev communities throughout Tuesday. Two people were lightly hurt by shrapnel and about 60 suffered shock.

The rocket fire reached new ranges on Tuesday, with Grad missiles landing in Beersheba and near the cities of Kiryat Malachi and Rahat.

Weather conditions may hamper ground incursion:Earlier Tuesday, government ministers approved the draft of 2,500 reserve soldiers, in addition to the enlistment of 6,700 reservists which was approved earlier this week, in order to expand the fighting units ahead of a possible ground incursion in Gaza.

The move was aimed at signaling that Israel's plans to possibly enter the Strip in order to oppress the Palestinian rocket fire still stand.

Defense officials clarified that Israel's ground incursion may be avoided due to the harsh weather conditions expected in the next 48 hours. However, the IDF is prepared to defend the home front if it realizes that there is no other way to stop the rocket and mortar fire.

An increasing number of ministers demanded Tuesday night that Israel turn down calls made by France and other countries to accept a ceasefire.

Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai said the Gaza operation must not be halted until the Israel Air Force hits its entire bank of targets. Then, he said, Israel should allow four-hour pauses each time for the delivery of aid into the Strip and in order to examine Hamas' willingness to accept a ceasefire.

There are photos and also more info on the article.

These arabs are merciless, and they use their children as worthless slaves, and offer them up for stray bullets in order to stage one of their demonstrations that cause the world to berate their real victim, Israel, while most of the world joins in.

They have mastered victimhood as a perpetual career, and I only hope that the weak Israeli government will have the inner strength to do what it must to survive, and the rest of the world can just sod off. 536 CapitalistTool  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 11:31:03pm

So England and France want a truce for aid?

I have another idea: have the aid trucks follow the advancing IDF tanks.

As for France, the country with the current EU presidency, Israel should stonewall. On January 1, the presidency transfers to the Czech Republic. What do they think about what is happening in Gaza?

The Czech Republic, which takes over the European Union's presidency on January 1, defended Israel's strikes against Hamas on Tuesday.

The EU has called for a cease-fire to end the violence that has killed almost 350 Palestinians. But Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said Israel had the right to defend itself.

"Let us realize one thing: Hamas increased steeply the number of rockets fired at Israel since the ceasefire ended on December 19. That is not acceptable any more," Schwarzenberg told daily Mlada Fronta Dnes in an interview.

France, which will hand over the EU's rotating presidency to Prague, has condemned Israel's strikes and the rocket attacks from Hamas militants and called for both to stop immediately.

Schwarzenberg, a staunch ally of Washington, said Hamas had excluded itself from serious political debate due to its rocket attacks on Israel. He also indirectly blamed the group for the growing death toll, saying it put its bases and gun warehouses in densely populated areas.

"Why am I one of the few that have expressed understanding for Israel? ... I am enjoying the luxury of telling the truth," Schwarzenberg told the daily.

He said under the Czech EU presidency he would try to push through a policy that would lead to peace, saying "I would be very happy if it helped the Palestinians".

If he wins it will be a clear signal that this BS about bending to the will of the international community will no longer be acceptable policy. Show the world that a nation has the right to defend itself.

I think that that is the end state of all of this, eventually. Israel has to make sure that when it happens, it happens on their terms and possibly with at least the tacit approval of the key Arab states (Saudi, Jordan Egypt) and the key NATO nations.

According to earlier reports, Israeli leaders were considering a two-day truce proposal for which France is pressing. Tuesday night, Dec. 30, the IDF spokesman issued a strong denial of any such recommendation by the military or the Shin Bet.

In Hamas' first public statement, a masked spokesman read out a "Jihad Letter, which said: "The sea of Gaza will run dry before Hamas surrenders."
