Hey. Does anybody know how to donate a cell phone to military personnel overseas? I just got a new cell phone, and my old one was only purchased in March of last year. It's in perfectly good shape, but I'm texting more lately and I absolutely need a qwerty keypad or I'm worthless, so I bought a new phone. I thought I heard of a program somewhere that takes cell phones, charges them up with minutes and provides them to service men and women overseas.

Question. Is there a service that can actually take a very good cell phone and put minutes on it? I have two other older phones I'll definitely send to cellphonesforsoldiers, but this particular phone is in excellent working condition, complete with battery charger. It's nearly new. I'd like to think they could get more use out of it than just recycling the components.

One observation about my day in Manhattan. This recession sure isn't keeping people away from New York. Midtown and around Rockefeller Center were absolutely packed.
I had at least half a dozen groups of people ask me to take their picture and I didn't even have a sign on that read "Will take photos for tourists" ...
I should have started charging people.

I wrote this at the bottom of the last thread (with a few adjustments), but think it's worth repeating. The whole craziness with Israel even considering a truce - 48 hours - is something that really pisses me off. The Israeli politicians make a big show of standing firm, and then they go off and do something insanely stupid - essentially repeating the very mistakes that the Winograd Report warned about.
They're not fighting to win. They're fighting to simply bide time and hope that the rocket fire decreases. It's a fool's hope, and all that the bombings will accomplish under that scenario is some casualties on both sides, and plenty of propaganda for Hamas to crow about beating Israel; even as they're digging out of rubble for the next decade.
And now, Israel's making the same mistakes that they were being warned about six months ago.
Don't believe me?
Here's what I wrote six months ago (and it's worth repeating ad nauseum, even if the frellin' idiots in the Knesset and the Prime Minister's office don't pay attention because eventually one of them will - when the Palestinians are busy ransacking the place at some point in the future when Israel's will to defend itself has completely eroded away by PC and a lack of support from the West against the Islamists):
I'd say that this truce is dead and Israel should resume its operations against the terrorists along with a retightening of its restrictions on aid and items entering Gaza.If Israel lets these incidents slide, the Palestinians will rightfully conclude that they can continue to fire on Israel at will without facing repercussions.
The terrorists will deny and evade responsibility for breaking the ceasefire, and will whine and seethe should Israel retaliate against those terrorists for attacking Israel. They will claim that it was Israel who broke the ceasefire, not them, even as there's irrefutable proof that the Palestinians broke it.
The terrorists might even point to an IDF operation that killed an Islamic Jihad terrorist as proof that Israel broke the truce. Never forget for one moment that the Palestinians have not given up on the idea of destroying Israel or attacking it at the earliest possible moment. They have simply engaged in a hudna to buy time and space to regroup and rearm.
That's the scenario that's played out right down to the way that Hamas used one of their terror ops as a pretext for launching still more terror attacks to precipitate Israel's response. Israel's response has been not much better than during the Hizbullah war, and talk of a truce only confirms that they lack the will to defeat Hamas. They're looking only for a status quo - which is a losing proposition.
I can't believe that Israelis stand for this nonsense.
Hamas starts a war, and Israel has leftists pushing an agenda that is wholly detached from reality and prevents Israel from actually winning and making Hamas and the Gazans feel the bitter sting of defeat when that is the only true way to peace. *shaking head*

Don't know, but that's more optimistic than other reports that said that they barely dented Hamas' operations and terror caches. I think there is plenty of speculation as to what the tactical situation is. Israelis can attempt to figure out how many weapons might be available - based on the amount of pipe, explosives, terrorists with missile/bomb capabilities, etc. and extrapolate numbers with a range.
I think all of the numbers point in one direction - Israel must continue pounding Hamas.

Ever see the Great Escape? You don't just have one tunnel (or even 40 - or 70 if another bunch were hit today). You have as many as physically possible so that if some are detected, some are bombed, the rest can be used.
You not only have to destroy the tunnels, but take out the tunnel diggers who are building them. Or - even better - reestablish the Philadelphi corridor to prevent Hamas from resupplying via Egypt.

Ever see the Great Escape?
My wife is a home care nurse. She went to a fella's house 2 weeks ago who had heart surgery (I think) and found out he was Canadian. He was a Canadian bomber pilot during WWII and was shot down. He ended up at that same POW camp and helped dig one of those tunnels portrayed in the Great Escape.

Hey Hoosier...I've lived all over the Golden State. Raised in Davis but have also lived in Laguna Niguel, Mammoth Lakes, Santa Cruz and most recently and longest tenure in San Diego. Sadly, California lost its magic. And as I'm sure you know being a native, there was a lot of magic to be had, once upon a time. I'm in Raleigh, NC now and loving it, big time.
Nice meeting you..Born outside of Firebaugh.. In the sticks and raised in the Napa Valley.. My daughter went to UC Davis..
and the wooden roller coaster on the Santa Cruz boardwalk? I only rode it a billion zillion times..at least,, :)

One, according to its press release, is Muhammad Imran Usmani, who happens to be the son of Sheik Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, who supports violent jihad against Westerners. The elder Usmani is so radical that Dow Jones & Co. recently removed him from the board of its Islamic market index.
At a minimum, AIG has to do better due diligence if it's going to use taxpayer money for such a controversial enterprise. But what's the responsibility of the U.S. government here?
The Thomas More Law Center, a public-interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Mich., argues the U.S. is promoting a religious legal code at odds with democratic values and capitalism. And that makes the bailout unconstitutional. So it's suing Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and the Federal Reserve to stop all bailout funds from going to AIG.
According to the suit, use of taxpayer funds to acquire ownership of a business that intentionally promotes, endorses, supports and funds Shariah-based Islamic religious practices violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
"The U.S. government, through its ownership of AIG, is not only violating the Constitution," the suits claims, "but also promoting and financing the destruction of America using American tax dollars."
While that sounds over-the-top, a sizeable share of the profit and any interest earned by AIG's Islamic subsidiary must be "purified" by investing in Islamic charities. Such transfers will be controlled by Usmani and other Shariah advisers.
Since 9/11, dozens of major Muslim charities around the world, including several based in the U.S., have been tied to terrorism and shut down. So AIG — along with American taxpayers — could unwittingly finance terrorism against the U.S. and its allies.

The drum kits are a piece of crap. They always break, every one ever made. Unless it was never actually played. Its scandalous really. They are made to break. If any American made product was such a cheap piece of crap, American consumers would write letters to their Congressperson.
The kids trick them out right out of the box with reinforcing steel brackets from Lowes aluminum taped all over the cheap plastic connections. My kid spent about 4 hours the day after Christmas getting the brand new wireless drum kit ready to actually use.

Consolation prize - finally went to Pinnacles National Monument near King City on the drive back.
I have been driving by that area for 25 years and never bothered to stop. Very glad I did - about a two hour diversion from the 101. Stunningly beautiful area - native Californians will especially appreciate the unique environment and geology. Saw three Condors flying along the cliffs - first time I have ever seen a Condor in the wild.

Consolation prize - finally went to Pinnacles National Monument near King City on the drive back.
I have been driving by that area for 25 years and never bothered to stop. Very glad I did - about a two hour diversion from the 101. Stunningly beautiful area - native Californians will especially appreciate the unique environment and geology. Saw three Condors flying along the cliffs - first time I have ever seen a Condor in the wild.

I agree - the "impeachment" committee will subpoena all the "witnesses" that they intend to protect which will dick up Fitz's investigation and then undermine his whole case. And now that Blago has named a Senator, he has made the whole matter even messier. Since he pandered with the race card it will be hard for the whole chorus to condemn him. So Blago won't get isolated and sacrificed by the machine. They will screw over Fitz and get Obama to name a new US atty.

Okay, I haven't really. But I do see it often, and I make all haste to get ahead of that individual as soon as possible. I don't even like seeing people talk on the cell phone behind the wheel. I bought a bluetooth headset for that very reason, and I'll almost never take a call if I'm in heavy traffic.
But I do keep rocks and firearms out of my Jeep for these very reasons.

Good evening all. I hope that everyone is doing well. Other than Israel the news has been slow since Christmas. I am happy they are bombing those pricks, but I am praying the do not stop because of wimps in the "International Community".
Biggest worry in my mind is GW opening his pie hole and asking Israel to back off so that Obama doesn't have to deal with the situation on inauguration day. Israel should tell the whole planet to f itself and come invade them if they want Hamas spared. Otherwise shut up.

Yesterday morning a fawning NBC moonbat, Tracie Potts, allowed Cynbat the Sailor McKinney to get away with saying that "every bit of rubble in Gaza was put there by American weapons." This is not true, Israel provides many of its own weapons and some items come from countries such as Germany and Finland. Even so, I want to say here and now that I am very proud and pleased to see my tax dollars and our American made arsenal contributing so effectively to this noble undertaking.

Not to just jump in, but the other day I was headed home from work, I work nights, and my sleep schedule had been off for about a week. Anyhow, I'm driving and I am all of two miles from home on the feeder road to the freeway, I exit and within about ten seconds had blacked out. I woke up a couple of seconds later going fifty miles an hour and about ten feet from the back of another car. God must love me, because I some how managed to swerve around it on the left side. Needless to say, the adrenaline kept me awake for about thirty minutes more.

Victory is considerably older than Constitution, having been commissioned in 1765. It is a 3 deck ship of the line, while Constitution is a frigate, a single decker with fewer guns. Constitution is nearly as large though in overall tonnage. Constitution is actually afloat, however, and went to sea in 1997 to celebrate its 200th anniversary; while Victory is embedded in concrete.

They are close to the same age. HMS Victory has more displacement and armaments, but I am guessing USS Constitution was faster. Both of them are very well maintained. If you go to HMS in the summer months, they have an actual crew onboard...it is a really cool way to spend a day.

Great question; one I ask my friends who insist on communicating by text. Personally, I love talking to my friends, and prefer to hear their voice. But text has it's advantages when you just want to get a message to someone and don't have the time or attention to make conversation. For instance, when you're driving at high speeds in heavy traffic.
Just kidding.
I have eight nieces and nephews, roughly 10 - 21, and I'm almost certain none of them know how to operate a voice messaging system, much less pick up a phone and dial. But I get messages from them frequently, and that seems to be the only way they communicate.
Plus, from a marketing standpoint, I'm experimenting with "twitter" for a while. The phone was free with a new service agreement, and if I can get a sweet hook-up for some service personnel overseas on my old phone it's a total win-win.

Sometimes, you can't get voice - I've actually had times when I texted (from the train, folks, I don't text behind the wheel. Hell, I don't answer my phone behind the wheel!) because I couldn't get a voice connection.

BIL is a doctor, and he and my sister have six kids and the schedule to prove it. She can communicate with a text and he can read it while walking between patients, which would be a lot harder with a phone call.
Personally, I don't text. My husband is an engineer, and motherboards don't care if you pick up the phone and talk for a second while they are waiting.

same here. Israel should let the world know it will bomb Gaza till no Gaza rockets hit Israel for a 24 hour period.
Hamas would never stop the rockets with a public dare like that (they would agree if the offer was not mad public - the West is obsessed with giving Arabists and Islamists opportunities to "save face") . So Israel can then just take out all of Hamas, and take its time doing it.

Maybe I'd be doing a public service by keeping a bucket of rocks in my Jeep and throwing them at text messagers and cell phone users.
Eventually, people would fear talking on their phone while they drive, for fear of a rock hitting their windshield. And if every text messager suddenly started getting an armor piercing round through their engine block, maybe they'd stop texting, too. Hmm... This could be a solution.

So, I did manage to get my brain to allow me to read some more on Posse Comitatus. It's really rather interesting, although I didn't get to read enough of the history involved. It all starts (as it seems so much of our modern American history does) with the Civil War.
Anyway, it isn't as limiting as common myth would have us believe. I think we can rest assured that if the whackos try to do anything in country, the military would be legally able to take care of it.
Other than that they are basically allowed to provide "passive" support for law enforcement for any other domestic stuff. Oh, and the National Guard's role is kinda cool. They are limited only if called on the federal level. On the State level they are able to act.
There was one episode involving the Navy/Coast Guard that was something I want to read more about.

Actually it's easier without it. You just have to remember which letters go with what numbers. The predictive text just let's you type faster. The traditional way is more accurate though, because you are spelling it out instead of the phone guessing. I had my phone for about four years before I figured out the predictive, and I'm twenty five. My friend showed me how about two years ago. Never went back.

They are morons on the road, you really have to watch them. Lol, part of it I guess is the fact that I live on the road. If I need to go anywhere it is at least thirty minutes on the road. Well I understand and appreciate your point of view. What I was getting at, is that if you had read the comments following that one you would have seen that I explained that I do not do it often, and as time has gone by and I have gotten older I do it less and less. It is not the most intelligent thing to do while driving, but I see things that are just as bad or worse and no one harps on them the way they do phones. I have never had a moving violation or accident in ten years of driving, but the times I have come close to an accident where when I was tired, not on the phone. Sleep deprivation is more dangerous than many other things.
