Reporters Complaining About White House Kagan Interview

Media • Views: 3,100

The White House has posted an interview with Elena Kagan conducted by a White House staffer, and journalists are complaining. They wanted to interview her first. Waah.

While the White House seems to believe the American people deserve to hear from Kagan, it has not made her available to reporters. That prompted some consternation at today’s White House briefing.

“It appears that Solicitor General Kagan did an interview yesterday right after the president’s announcement,” said a reporter. “You’ve now posted that on the White House Web site. Who did the interview? And can I have one?”

“I think it’s — I think it’s on the website if you want to see it,” responded Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

Soon after, the reporter can be heard saying, an edge in her voice, “So a White House staffer interviewing her.”

Gibbs says yes, and the reporter asks if Kagan would like to do another interview.

“She has — she’s not told me that, no,” replied Gibbs, prompting the reporter to respond, “Tell her we’re deeply frustrated.”

The decision to post an interview with Kagan conducted by a government employee - not a journalist - is in line with the Obama administration’s policy of regularly using new media tools to go around traditional media.

Its also worth noting that really, as far as I can remember no supreme court would be judge has ever given themselves over to the press to conduct an interview with them before going before the Senate. I don’t remember our Sotomayor being interviewed before her hearings….

CBS puts quotes around “interview” in their headline, as though it’s not a real one if not done by a real journalist.

That is a bit of a stretch. Historically nominees have not done interviews till after the confirmation hearings and having a staffer do a bio interview and using new media to make it available is akin to sending out a press release on the touchy-feely aspects of the nominee.

Given the stupidity of most of the questions reporters ask any more (to be fair and balanced, you know, you have to ask if the person might be a communist at heart or a baby killer), I can’t say I blame the White House for releasing an interview for the press corps to use.

I think the next step, just to let the press know how bad they’ve gotten, would be to post a list of appropriate questions for them to ask when they conduct interviews. After they’ve shown they can ask intelligent questions on a regular basis, then they can start making up their own.

16 Renaissance_Man  Thu, May 13, 2010 10:31:21am

When journalists start practicing journalistic integrity again, and actually seeking the truth or facts in an issue rather than the most exciting spin, then perhaps they can reclaim their position as gatekeepers in the flow of information.

Their “parents” and the dance instructor need a major time out. Maybe they should have to listen to stories from sexual abuse survivors as a reminder that childhood is not to be sexualized.

It was like that when I was younger. It’s doubtful that the girl had one clue what she was singing about. I remember singing songs that when I realized years later what they were about I had I really good laugh. There were a couple of Abba songs like that. My favourite at about age 7 was ‘On and On and On’. Used to belt that one out and dance around.

Then there were the semi-raunchy songs we’d sing in Girl Guides. Looking back at some of those is pretty funny. I now understand why the leaders didn’t want us to sing them. At the time though we really didn’t know exactly what they were about. They were just funny for some reason.

” Girls, girls, girls that’s all I see
There’s not a guy in this vicinity
And when at ten o’clock
They bar the door
Oh, what I wouldn’t give
To see my guy once more
And when the weekend finally rolls around
I’m gonna turn my hometown upside down
I’m gonna find my guy
And neck, and neck, and neck, and neck
To heck with all these girls”
——
And there was granny
Swinging on the outhouse door
Without a nightie
Waiting for the garbage man
Who was a playboy
To take her to the playboy house
To be a bunny
Baby could you ask for more
10 dollars please?
Will that be cash of chargex.

——
They said the world was roundo, they said it couldn’t be foundo
The hypervating, masturbating, son of bitch Colombo….

(Now THAT one was hilarious to revisit)
