I think most people know it is dangerous for someone with a highly contagious disease to go to a public place or be around large crowds. An exception appears to the Lubbock Power and Light Company. If you want new service, or want to move your old service to a new address, you have to present yourself in person at their office with your lease or ownership papers, picture ID, and social security card, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you're unfortunate enough to either be sick or to get sick while you're moving, you have two choices: Make do without water and electricity or drag yourself to their office to take care of it. An acquaintance of my mother did this even while she was in the second (coughing fit) stage of pertussis. There was no choice at all, she would have died without electricity and water. Noone else can do it for you either, it has to be the applicant.
This seems obscenely stupid and callous to me. It probably gets the LP&L bureaucrats' little power-freak tendrils quivering, but it is a menace to public health.

That wasn't true for me in the pre-9/11 world. I think there is, and was, a lot of variance. Here in the post-9/11 world, I've been able to change electricity service with a phone call, too.

It just matters what the bureaucracy you're dealing with decides.

I've found it actually easier, as the interwebs and things increase, to be able to do things online or over the phone, rather than in person. I don't attribute this to any sense on the part of bureaucracies, but that letting things happen that way is a significant cost savings for them.

I'm surprised. Since 9/11 you can't even get a crappy state ID card without multiple pieces of id, including mail delivered to your address, and getting anything other than Cable turned on requires an in-person visit. I've had an Indiana drivers license for 25 years and when I had to get it re-done recently I had to jump through hoops.

Morning, all. From the world of finance: JP Morgan Chase reported today. Weird results. Revenue down but profit way up, beating expectations by 11 cents a share, which is huge. They made $4.4B for the quarter, nearly 20 cents a share more than Q3 09.

Is JPM a harbinger of better results to come, or are they now so much better than everyone else that they are in a class by themselves?

On the economy, Joe Steglitz has some thoughts, per CNBC:

The US government should stimulate investment in order to ensure solid and sustainable economic growth, not cut taxes, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz told CNBC Wednesday.
Stiglitz, who earlier this month accused the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank of throwing the world into "chaos" with their money-printing, said the first round of the stimulus did work for the US economy and that without it unemployment would have peaked at 12 percent or even 13 percent.
But the government has underestimated the severity of the downturn and did not design the stimulus as well as it could, he added.
"Before the crisis we were very profligate, we consumed. The question is not spending, but how you spend," Stiglitz said.
"If we spend it on investment… we will grow today and we will grow in the future," he added.
If the economy continues to remain weak, the US will be "wasting human capital" because a lot of people will be long-term unemployed, he said.
Investment by the government in the internet "really transformed the economy" and, on average, returns on education, health and infrastructure have been good in the US, according to Stiglitz.
Increasing spending and not cutting taxes is the best way to boost the economy, he said.
"When you have households with an overhang of debt, homeowners owing more on their mortgage than the value of the homes, tax cuts are not going to stimulate the economy," Stiglitz said. "What we need now is to stimulate investment."

Yesterday the Westboro Baptist Church, the group that regularly protests at funerals of those who served in the military (prompting the father of a slain soldier to sue the church's pastor), had a few of its protesters in Brooklyn and Manhattan yesterday to spread its provocative gospel of "God Hates Fags," "Thank God For 9/11," and "Your Rabbi Is A Whore." At one location in Brooklyn, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D) was so incensed he tried to punch out Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of the church's founder Fred Phelps. According to WPIX:

Hikind interrupted an interview Phelps-Roper was doing with PIX 11 News to slap the posters, saying "Come on!" Phelps-Roper shouted, "Don't touch me! Don't touch me!" while police supervisors grabbed the Assemblyman by the waist. "How dare you have those signs!" Hikind yelled. He then warned the Kansas group, "Just be careful the rest of your day in Brooklyn."


Hikind also called Phelps-Roper a "whore" (you can see video below). Yeshiva World News reports that the Westboro protesters' minivan's tires were slashed: "They were seen a short while later getting their flat fixed at a local tire-repair shop. 'The only thing I’m sad about, is that all four of their tires weren’t slashed', Dov Hikind told YWN."

In a radio interview, former White House correspondent Helen Thomas acknowledges she touched a nerve with remarks about Israel that led to her retirement. But she says the comments were "exactly what I thought," even though she realized soon afterward that it was the end of her job.

"I hit the third rail. You cannot criticize Israel in this country and survive," Thomas told Ohio station WMRN-AM in a sometimes emotional 35-minute interview that aired Tuesday. It was recorded a week earlier by WMRN reporter Scott Spears at Thomas' Washington, D.C., condominium.

Thomas, 90, stepped down from her job as a columnist for Hearst News Service in June after a rabbi and independent filmmaker videotaped her outside the White House calling on Israelis to get "out of Palestine." She gave up her front row seat in the White House press room, where she had aimed often pointed questions at 10 presidents, going back to Dwight D. Eisenhower.

She has kept a low profile since then.

"(It was) very hard for the first two weeks. After that, I came out of my coma," Thomas said.

Rabbi David Nesenoff, who runs the website rabbilive.com, said he approached Thomas after he'd been at the White House for Jewish Heritage Day on May 27. He asked whether she had any comments on Israel.

"Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine," she replied.

"Remember, these people are occupied and it's their land. It's not Germany, it's not Poland," she continued. Asked where they should go, she answered, "They should go home."

"Where's home?" Nesenoff asked.

"Poland, Germany and America and everywhere else," Thomas replied.

Wow! 1st time i've felt a quake- now I know what the Californians feel like- this thing was around 25-30 miles from me and shook my house for 2-3 seconds. Don't know what the boom was... something must have fallen down nearby.

They say that we have more earthquakes in OK than in CA, but they are usually so smal;l no one notices.

Symbols of the National Socialist Party (NAZIs) were recently spray-painted on signs of a Jewish Republican candidate for Maine State Senate. Blogger Al Diamon DownEast.com explains:

Last week, somebody defaced some of Republican state Senate candidate Roger Katz’s campaign signs in Augusta with anti-Semitic slurs. The wording of the messages indicated the graffiti was probably not the work of kids, since it mirrored phrases favored by neo-Nazi hate groups (including the acronym “ZOG,” which stands for “Zionist Occupation Government”).

You’d think that such an incident might be news, particularly since Katz is the city’s mayor, and the vandalism was reported to police. But the Kennebec Journal didn’t seem to think the story merited coverage. Nor would it allow publication of at least two letters to the editor on the subject — one of them from a city councilor.

That embargo remained in place for nearly a week, ending on October 8, after the story showed up on WGME-TV out of Portland. Even then, the KJ gave it only a brief mention in the second section.

According to a person familiar with the editorial thinking at the KJ, the story was suppressed because the paper feared reporting on it would encourage more anti-Semitic incidents.

I go up between Cayuga and Seneca Lake on occasion when driving between Geneseo and Philadelphia. If I'm not pushed for time I take that route for the scenery and too stop by 2-3 wineries to restock the home supply. :)

The interstates are faster, but going through/past Geneva and Ithaca is generally worth it a few times a year.

I think the points that will be argued when this hits the SCOTUS (and it will) is that (a) the use of GPS tracking doesn't require the traditional method of an agent to actually follow the suspect as they can sit in an office and track them on a computer and (b) they are allowed to go onto private property without a warrant to attach a device to electronically monitor your activities, again, without a warrant.

That last one (I hope) will probably be what gets this decision over turned.

The people polled seem to want The Affordable Health Care Act repealed (42% keep to 47% repeal) when asked, but don't want to get rid of any of the parts of it except for taxing employers who provide "generous" health insurance benefits (31% keep to 61% repeal) and with a smaller spread the mandate (45% keep to 51% repeal).
I think this may be the 2nd or third poll to find that Americans want the stuff in the AHCA...they just seem to not realize that those are provisions within the Act they want to repeal.

They also found that people really, really do not like groups not disclosing who their donors are.

I've been thinking about some of the "grève" that has been going on in France over the last few weeks, and thinking about my vacation in Jan. 2011. That's one of the many reasons I go to France in mid-winter... they don't tend to want to be roaming the streets protesting in 0 degrees (c) weather.

But, with all the recent terror warnings, it certainly will probably add a nice touch of "concern" to the trip.

I've been to Paris before any 9/11 like incident, and I've seen paramilitary police walking around with automatic rifles. It's not an uncommon sight... sometimes I think we Americans are spoiled, think we are special, think our "freedoms" sets us aside from realities.

Heck, last Sept. I was in Grand Central Station in New York City, and that dude in Colorado was being connected with that cell of Muslims in Queens and the Bronx, and some big tennis match was in town, and Grand Central looked like a bivouac, there were tons of national guard's waling around... looking very official.

Strikes in France, security measures in public places, all part of the game.

The people polled seem to want The Affordable Health Care Act repealed (42% keep to 47% repeal) when asked, but don't want to get rid of any of the parts of it except for taxing employers who provide "generous" health insurance benefits (31% keep to 61% repeal) and with a smaller spread the mandate (45% keep to 51% repeal).
I think this may be the 2nd or third poll to find that Americans want the stuff in the AHCA...they just seem to not realize that those are provisions within the Act they want to repeal.

They also found that people really, really do not like groups not disclosing who their donors are.

it was the same through the whole second half of the (death panel dominated) debate -

"are you in favour of the bill?" - NO

"are you in favour of A, B, C, D and E?" - YES

"did you know that they are in the above bill?" - NO

Jeff Hannon, 23, a staffer for the Paladino campaign, also hasn't shown up at work since the bomb-throwing GOP gubernatorial hopeful made his caustic comments about homosexuality, one of Hannon's co-workers told The Post.

In a brief phone interview yesterday, Hannon, in his first public remarks on the incident, told The Post, "Obviously, I'm very offended by his comments."

Hannon said he had no further comments "right now," before hanging up.

That could be a big mess. The Republicans are going to try to block that and force a tax increase on all tax brackets and blame the Dems for it.

I think the points that will be argued when this hits the SCOTUS (and it will) is that (a) the use of GPS tracking doesn't require the traditional method of an agent to actually follow the suspect as they can sit in an office and track them on a computer and (b) they are allowed to go onto private property without a warrant to attach a device to electronically monitor your activities, again, without a warrant.

That last one (I hope) will probably be what gets this decision over turned.

I don't believe that the Supreme Court will hear this case. Will go down as cert. denied.

It's highly ironic that the stock market is the conservatives' litmus test for how well the economy is doing, until the following three conditions occur simultaneously:

A) the stock market is going up
B) unemployment remains high
C) there is a Democrat in the White House

At which point, the stock market is irrelevant and the Democrat is to blame because EVERYONE IS UNEMPLOYED!!!

The fact that they are essentially complaining about the Democrat's lack of success or interest in deploying a (left-wing) full-employment economic policy is, of course, where the irony comes from.

The GOP only gives a shit about unemployment if:

1> it is bond traders or hedge fund operators that are unemployed, or
2> there is political profit in seeming to care about it.

Beyond that, not so much.

He got a good write-up in a St Louis magazine - such-and-such a sauce best on steak; such-and-such a sauce best on chicken; Werewolf sauce best on everything else... :)
