Science Confirms: Trolls Really Are Horrible People!

I’m sure you never would have been able to guess that
Internet • Views: 36,566

Slate magazine reports on a new psychology paper from researchers at the University of Manitoba, which sought to investigate whether people who engage in trolling were characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad:

  • Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others),
  • narcissism (egotism and self-obsession),
  • psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and
  • sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).

It is hard to underplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What’s more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet.

Overall, the authors found that the relationship between sadism and trolling was the strongest, and that indeed, sadists appear to troll because they find it pleasurable. “Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others,” they wrote. “Sadists just want to have fun … and the Internet is their playground!”

(So remember: When Charles breaks out the ban hammer, he’s not doing it to stifle discussion or debate — he’s merely showing the door to people who really have no interest in being part of the community.)

Stop it or I well wipe my booger on you.

2 ausador  Sat, Feb 15, 2014 12:21:26pm

Quite a few of them are just as yet un-matured teenagers acting out and relishing the community responses.

They see getting people to respond to their deliberate attempts at getting the other posters riled as having the power to make them do what they want. They then congratulate themselves on being “clever enough” to get the response they were seeking from the other posters. It does not seem to be an entirely non-typical view for a juvenile of what constitutes control and influence over others.

I didn’t need a university study to tell me that, direct observational experience of the internet over many years led me to that conclusion. :p

I entertained the thought for a moment that perhaps there was just disagreement on the degree, since they can consider 2nd and manslaughter in addition to 1st degree. But then I read that they can’t even agree on lesser charges and realized that the holdouts must be going for acquittal.

The loud music they were playing was an assault on his hearing, he might have ended up with permanent ear damage. Therefore his only recourse was to pull his licensed concealed carry gun and start blasting away indiscriminately at the vehicle. I’m surprised this even went to trial, seems like a classic case of Florida SYG self-defense to me…

25 ObserverArt  Sat, Feb 15, 2014 2:54:21pm

Hmmm. A timely move of this topic from the side page to a main article. Almost like it was intended or something.

One thing I’ve learned about trolls from years on sports forums. They love for targets to object and be offended. That is a positive hit, a bite on the lure. Fish on.

Here at LGF, they might just get off on a downding, counting them like scores on how successful the troll has been. I think it fun to pull on the line a bit then spit the hook out. Fish off.

Regarding the Florida trial…what a mess. Another repeat of Martin and Zimmerman. It is almost as if it is a license to kill. Just claim self defense and the law makes it rather unclear how that could ever be denied. The burden seems to be what is on one’s mind rather than evidence, facts, and logic.

I sure would have liked to be around the legislators and creators of the whole concept to understand their reasoning. You would think they got it wrong, but then you almost have to wonder if it was intended. The question then would be, what is that intention? There certainly doesn’t seem to be a hell of a lot of pressure to change it either. Very strange thinking in the whole thing.

You have to wonder about going out in public because you have spree killers and now you have to worry about going out in public because you just plain don’t know who might not like a certain aspect about you and decide they are going to shot you and claim self defense. Its a warped way to interpret American law from the standard of innocent until proven guilty. Very chilling.

The law doesn’t just provide a license to kill and claim anything as self-defence. The intent, and the interpretation, of it is to allow you to do whatever you like if you have a gun. In American culture and under current interpretation of these kinds of laws, you are morally right by virtue of having the gun, because the gun is the most sacred object in culture. And that’s why there’s no pressure to change the law, because it is a law about gun sanctification.

The decision to make Underwood a “blue dog” Democrat was very cagey; assuming HoC goes for a five-year arc it allows conflicts and power brokering with both Democrats and Republicans. If they had made him, say, a northeast Democrat or a Tea Party Republican, it might be a bit of a stretch to see Underwood “working” with the other side to get anything accomplished.

re: #44 The War TARDIS

I am noticing alot of people telling me to relax as I am still young, in regard to relationships.

Relaxing is a good idea for relationships no matter how old you are. If you’re going to ever settle down and live with another person or marry them, you are going to get to know damn near everything about them, good and bad. You’re going to learn all their quirks and all their habits. Some of the things they do will annoy you. Others will piss you off. Some will make you laugh. The key to a good relationship is figuring out the balance that works between you and that other person.

I think a big part of the problem is that I don’t really feel young anymore.

I can’t relate to the suicidal thoughts, since even in my blackest moods I never felt the desire to end it all. However, a large part of what you’re feeling is entirely normal for anyone who has ever been depressed. I went through it in my 20’s and then again in my late 30’s when I was starting grad school at the same time that my mom got diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and my world turned upside down.

Thing is, it really DOES get better. It sounds trite to someone still in that headspace, but time and perspective can do a lot. The things that drove me to despair in my late teens and 20’s are barely a distant memory anymore. The only thing I can tell you is to find a support system that works for you, but don’t put all the pressure on them to do all the heavy lifting. That’s not fair to you or to them.

You’ll figure it out, even if you don’t see it just yet.

Much like the discussion about the poor quality of science reporting on the previous thread, legal reporting is often really bad too. It’s difficult to be informed enough to understand some of these decisions since news reporting and activists select the facts that support a desired narrative and wishful predictions of what the verdicts might be. Kickstarter Says It Was Hacked

recode.net

“Crowdfunding website Kickstarter said in an email to its members on Saturday afternoon that hackers had broken into its platform and accessed the personal information of its users.

“On Wednesday night, law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter and alerted us that hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers’ data,” CEO Yancey Strickler said in the message, which was also posted to the company blog. “Upon learning this, we immediately closed the security breach and began strengthening security measures throughout the Kickstarter system.”

“The company said that credit card information was not accessed, and that there is “no evidence of unauthorized activity of any kind on all but two Kickstarter user accounts.” (Emphasis made by the company.)”

Yep. From the looks of her wiki, her approach to these sorts of cases is to overcharge in the hopes of getting a plea deal instead of going to trial, because so far the only person she’s taken to trial and won a conviction on was a woman who fired a warning shot in order to scare off a violent ex-husband.

73 Shiplord Kirel  Sat, Feb 15, 2014 3:50:13pm

Freeper opinion is actually divided over the Dunn trial, with some pretty serious contrasts in evidence:

“I vote for acquittal. Sick of boom boxers forcing their evil crap on everyone around them.”

“Sounds like they already convicted him of firing into the automobile and attempted murder. It may just be a question of causation. He’s an idiot. Sort of like the old dude who shot the man texting in the theater.”

“From what I know about this case it sounds like the shooter went way, way,*way* over the line and deserves some very serious jail time…maybe even life.”

Too egregious for freep to defend and the case is still in doubt? I think I’ll stay out of Florida. I’m old and white but that may not help since I could easily get caught in crossfire when some psycho opens up on some ill- behaved kids. Texas is bad enough but we haven’t formally legalized the shooting of black teenagers (yet).

Just a fair warning the price is likely going up soon. They floated the idea of $119 for the year, which is a $40 dollar bump and it looks like that may be too much for a lot of subscribers, but speculation is it will be at least an extra $20 a year. Still worth it IMO, but if you get in before the hike you can save yourself a few bucks the first year.

My bad. Read that wrong. FL is screwed up in many ways, including its judicial system which has only 28 DAs; it is the 4th most populous state in the US. NC has 44 DAs and is the 10th most populous. Larger and more populated counties have their own DA.

Well, the social anthropologists for the most part would agree with you.

However, it is also quite clear that humans have self-grouped over tens of thousands of years of migration, and thus created distinct population groups, which DNA has demonstrated.

The inability to understand that different population groups are a different concept than the old ideas of “race” is the underly problem, as it takes a bit of background to understand what is meant by a “population”, haplotypes, etc.

As much as I’d rather see a guilty verdict on the murder, I’m starting to wonder whether the U.S. isn’t going to see more of this kind of thing. “Twelve Angry Men” might have been an example of how justice is *supposed* to work, but the way guns are fetishized in today’s culture, all it takes is one hardcore nitwit to throw a monkey into the wrench, as Mr. Willis might say.

Maybe Corey deserves some scorn, but I’m not sure even Jack McCoy would be able to get a guilty verdict in Florida in this kind of case.

This map shows there were almost 2000 cases specifically identified as racially-motivated lynchings. Who knows how many other (of literally thousands of) unsolved murders and “disappearances” during this time could also be listed here as well.

Before SYG, a defense would have to argue for a self-defense instruction to the jury, something that was at the discretion of the judge. Now with SYG, the defense simply says “He felt threatened,” and the jury has to twist itself into pretzels deciding if there really was a threat.

Yes we can. The people at that conference have written numerous books on the subject. That was one session among 150 at the AAAS conference. The PURPOSE of the session was to discuss what COULD go wrong in terms of discussing race scientifically. Here’s a much better article.

Racism as a social and scientific concept is reshaped and reborn periodically through the ages and according to a Penn State anthropologist, both medical and scientific researchers need to be careful that the growth of genomics does not bring about another resurgence of scientific racism.

[…]

According to Jablonski, it is not surprising that scientific racism is experiencing a rebirth, but not because people are malicious or necessarily have a racist belief systems. She believes that the scientific neoracists often are well intentioned, but that the application of genomic-based interventions, while potentially beneficial, cannot be done on a racial basis.

“We know that it is more likely for people in certain parts of Northern Europe to develop cystic fibrosis,” said Jablonski. “But it is wrong to say that this is a potential trait only of the European race, especially because of admixture.

“From a clinical medical perspective, people are more complexly admixed than ever. The best approach is to get people to talk about their levels of admixture, rather than label them or their diseases by race.”

re: #97 b_sharp

Time to dump the idea of race.

Or not.

In 2000, with the success of the Human Genome Project, scientists declared the death of race in biology and medicine. But within five years, many of these same scientists had reversed course and embarked upon a new hunt for the biological meaning of race. Drawing on personal interviews and life stories, Race Decoded takes us into the world of elite genome scientists—including Francis Collins, director of the NIH; Craig Venter, the first person to create a synthetic genome; and Spencer Wells, National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence, among others—to show how and why they are formulating new ways of thinking about race.

In this original exploration, Catherine Bliss reveals a paradigm shift, both at the level of science and society, from colorblindness to racial consciousness. Scientists have been fighting older understandings of race in biology while simultaneously promoting a new grand-scale program of minority inclusion. In selecting research topics or considering research design, scientists routinely draw upon personal experience of race to push the public to think about race as a biosocial entity, and even those of the most privileged racial and social backgrounds incorporate identity politics in the scientific process. Though individual scientists may view their positions differently—whether as a black civil rights activist or a white bench scientist—all stakeholders in the scientific debates are drawing on memories of racial discrimination to fashion a science-based activism to fight for social justice.

All he had to do was plant that little seed of doubt…

Yep. Dunn ran from the scene of the crime, didn’t call 911, did nothing to in any way support a case of self-defense…but the victims fled, and that’s all the defense needed to accuse the cops of incompetence.

So yeah, if you’re a minority living in Florida, GTFO. If you can’t, then do not travel outside your house alone. And if you are fired upon, do not run. Even if you’re shot and bleeding out, do not attempt to flee, else you’ll be the one that’s on trial for attempting to ditch a gun you never had.

Florida: “Attempt 3 murders, and the 4th one’s free.”

And the actual murder doesn’t count.

Not like that did a damn bit of good in this case, because Dunn shot up a car full of people; his one mistake was making sure that he didn’t waste them all while he had the chance.

“Sir, my client was afraid of the gun the victim was brandishing.”
“There was no evidence that the victim had a firearm.”
“That’s because he ditched it.”
“He was found sitting on the same toilet that the defendant found him on.”
“The victim fled to the next room, your honor. The police did not search the room thoroughly enough.”
“There is no evidence that the victim ever had a firearm.”
“HE DITCHED THE GUN!”

It was a very threatening fart.

…that’s why there’s no pressure to change the law, because it is a law about gun sanctification.

This is why I often refer to the victims of these types of shootings as human sacrifices.

Oh I don’t disagree at all. This is a declaration of open season on young black men in Florida. I can’t even comprehend it really. How the hell can that juror or jurors who fought for this evil assholes acquittal even look at themselves in the mirror?

Well if he goes away for even 20 he has another person to explain his rational to, the general. As in general prison population, and they might not buy his bullshit.

The worst trolls I have come across are on Politico. (I don’t dip into those other cesspools.)

I swear most of the trolls are paid bots and christian white supremist neo-nazi free dumb lovers.

The trolls really do enjoy torturing people with a flood of ridiculous lies. But that’s the point.

They create their own back slapping echo chamber and flood out other comments.

re: #38 Renaissance_Man

The law doesn’t just provide a license to kill and claim anything as self-defence. The intent, and the interpretation, of it is to allow you to do whatever you like if you have a gun. In American culture and under current interpretation of these kinds of laws, you are morally right by virtue of having the gun, because the gun is the most sacred object in culture. And that’s why there’s no pressure to change the law, because it is a law about gun sanctification.

Zardoz teaches:

The gun is good. The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life to poison the Earth with a plague of men, as once it was, but the gun shoots death, and purifies the Earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth … and kill!

Amen.

re: #141 Skip Intro

Is it too late for Dunn to get a speaking position at CPAC? He’d bring down the house. Maybe they should institute a Freedom to Kill award to be given to the person who gets away with it, despite the evidence. Obviously, George Zimmerman would need to be the first recipient, but Dunn should get one too for carrying on in Zimmerman’s path.

Maybe he can paint stuff….

Dunn’s next worry should be prison life, especially if his fellow inmates are African-American.

I think N. Maciavelli gets some undeserved bad press here; I wish there were another term for “willingness to manipulate and deceive others.”

I have always thought of Machiavelli as a realist with the goal of keeping things on an even keel.

He has a chapter on how to avoid flatterers, for instance, which is exactly on how to avoid being deceived.

Apparently the protestors outside the courthouse are passing around a petition demanding Angela Corey resign from office.

Is this because they don’t like their big damn hero being put on trial for his big damn heroics (in shooting an unarmed child like the biggest fucking sissy alive).
