How about this for a debate topic? In 12 to 18 months, if the current unprecedented drought continues (and the NWS just predicted it will) in the Southwest, Southern California will run out of water for its 22 million residents.

You’re seriously losing me here.
I think its pretty clear:
Some of the toughest spots from Giffords’ newly formed pro-gun-control super PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions, hammer Republican Martha McSally, a retired Air Force pilot who is running for the Arizona seat Giffords once held. One features a wrenching testimonial from a woman named Vicki who weeps and stumbles over her words as she recounts how her 19-year-old daughter was hunted down and murdered by an enraged ex-boyfriend.
“He had threatened her before. I knew. I just knew,” Vicki says. A narrator then declares that McSally “opposes making it harder for stalkers to get a gun.”
It’s no accident that Giffords is singling out McSally, people close to the former congresswoman say.
During her unsuccessful 2012 campaign, McSally ran TV commercials comparing herself to Giffords. The Giffords team fumed, and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, released a terse statement declaring, “Martha McSally is no Gabby Giffords.”
So, for making a comparison McSally is accused of enabling stalkers. I’d also ask which bill or law McSally is supposed to have opposed.

re: #67 Dark_Falcon
The AZ Fact Check showed that the ad was 100% factual. She does oppose additional gun laws to close various loopholes, including for gun shows. That is out of touch with even Arizona where 9 out of 10 support such measures.
Americans for Responsible Solutions derived its assertion that “nine out of ten Southern Arizonans” support background checks from a survey conducted by Global Strategy Group.
The organization surveyed 405 likely general-election voters in the 2nd Congressional District. Eighty-six percent of respondents indicated they thought background checks for all gun sales was an “excellent or good idea.” The survey also suggested that 89 percent of respondents believed that laws covering gun sales “should be made stronger or kept as they are.
The survey was conducted between July 12-15 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.
snip
BOTTOM LINE: McSally is a self-described strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Her gun control platform places an emphasis on addressing and treating mental illness, rather than restricting the sale of firearms. During a debate during her previous run for Congress she said current laws governing the sale of firearms at gun shows do not need to be changed, adding that further restrictions would be “unconstitutional.”
THE FINDING: Four stars, true.
If anyone needs a fact check, it’s not Giffords. She’s right on target with this, and McSally is the one who’s out of touch with what her potential constituents would want.

In March 2012, McSally was specifically asked about the gun-show loophole during a debate hosted by the Sabino Teen-Age Republicans at Sabino High School. The moderator asked: “So I think the gun control question I’d like to ask everyone, beyond their belief in the 2nd Amendment, is would you support, under any circumstances, what goes under the nickname of the so-called “Gun Show Loophole,” which would require private citizens to somehow get cleared before they can transfer a firearm to another private citizen?”
McSally responded by saying that the question is flawed because “it’s not a loophole.”
“It’s the law,” she said. “I mean, the law is clearly based on the Second Amendment that we all have the right to keep and bear arms. And I have the right as a private citizen to sell my possession to anyone I want to. It’s my lawful right. So, just like I can sell my car, I can sell my gun. And so, that’s the law, and that’s not a loophole. It’s freedom. And absolutely, it needs to stay that way, because any restrictions on that, at gun shows or other places, is just absolutely unconstitutional.”
Yeah, she sucks.

So, for making a comparison McSally is accused of enabling stalkers. I’d also ask which bill or law McSally is supposed to have opposed.

Which Drudge along with the rest of the right wing was demanding Obama do last year, but demurred because entering the conflict would have likely meant our aid went to ISIL.
Now, we’re going after ISIL in Syria. That indirectly benefits Assad, who’s a democidal autocrat, but it can help stop ISIL, which is a genocidal terror group with delusions of grandeurmass mayhem and forced conversions.
The least bad option here is to go after ISIL. That’s better than the alternatives.

Firing a unsuppressed shotgun while pregnant? If you think a fetus is a person, then that would have to go down as child abuse. And even if you don’t believe a fetus is a person, it is still very bad for one’s future child. The damage that gunfire can do to the hearing of an unborn child is actually magnified (because amniotic fluid in incompressible, so sound travels much better through it).
S.E. Cupp is being very foolish. It’d be one thing if she was only hurting herself, but she’s going to hurt her baby firing off that shotgun.

I’ve said all I care to say on that point.
You’re still wrong. You made a stupid Politico piece about something Gabby Giffords said into a political issue and what Gabby Giffords was talking about is not a political issue, it is human issue. Hell, it’s a public health issue IMO if you believe all the conservative media about violence in Chicago.

This kind of obstinate refusal to deal with cogent criticism just comes off as totally chicken-shit. I don’t know where you learned it, or why you persist in this kind of craven behavior, but you couldn’t invent a more counter productive strategy for dealing with uncomfortable realities.
How many years have we been saying this shit to Dark now? If he hasn’t gotten it by now, it’s either because he’s too dumb to pour piss out of a boot (which I don’t think is true) or he’s choosing to stay willfully, blissfully ignorant out of family and tribal loyalties (which I do think is the case).
I’m fucking done with him, because life’s too damned short to waste my breath on his ass; now, he’s strictly scrollover material for me from here on out.

And, as usual, Charles P. Pierce puts Politico in its proper place.
Tiger Beat On The Potomac has become quite upset that Gabby Giffords is attempting to demonstrate how her getting shot in the head once has affected her view of political candy-asses who enable the country’s insane attachment to its firearms…
For the purposes of telling the kidz to fk off, is it really necessary to google up all those law-and-order commercials that conservatives have run, attempting to pin atrocitiy murders on Democratic politicians? Do we really have to bring up Willie Horton again? Or the time N. Leroy Gingrich tried to pin on liberal permissiveness the fact that Susan Smith drowned her kids down in South Carolina? I don’t think so. Fk off, kidz…
Lee Atwater just laughed himself all the way off his spit in hell.

re: #134 klys
Well, since that point has been proven wrong, I guess he’s standing by his statement that Gabby Giffords needs to be taken down a few pegs.
I’m not sure what his justification is for thinking that, beyond that she’s a Democrat female who dares to have an opinion opposite his in politics and the actual ability to try and influence change, but whatever.
I know this thread has moved on but I wanted to comment.
Gabby is not only a Democrat, but one that has the possibility to motivate people to start movement toward some gun control legislation. And, she is throwing some of the political power at a Republican and Dark doesn’t like to see Democrats that play that same kind of politics he likes for his side. Like good ol’ “Cooch” in Virginia last year, who could say or do nothing wrong in Dark’s eyes.
That is most likely dangerous to Dark and it all needs to be taken down a few pegs. He doesn’t even seem to consider her injury and all that experience from it.

Oh no, you’re not getting off that easy…you’ve staked your position and it’s crystal clear. Now, you need to defend it, otherwise, this is all you’ll ever be:

This is par for the course. DF stakes out a position and then when challenged, finds some place else he has to be in a hurry.

re: #152 TedStriker
My defense is simple: Gifford’s ads struck me as nasty attacks by someone who markets herself as nice. My proposed response was based on my belief that to win a party has to neutralize the other side’s effective attackers, and some candidates should be willing to sacrifice their candidacies to get the needed hits in.

Best laugh I’ve had all day. His video talents are on par with his JOURNALISM (which he DOES in California.) Wonder if he got rights to use the Bon Jovi tune? Nah.
And could he BE any more melodramatic?
Best comment: He’s a journalist as much as George Costanza is an architect.

Gabby Gifford markets herself as ALIVE. And also, she’s not running for anything, because she got shot in the fucking head.

Giffords has to be torn down because she’s effective? Pure gang mentality. Your view of politics through the unprincipled lens of game theory and “optics” is just so deeply cynical and pathetic.

She is still active in Democratic politics and her ads are intended to advance her party.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it does mean she’s being a politician, not an activist. I just don’t like her being presented as something I think she’s not. The ads the Politico article references were attack ads by a politician to advance a political party, end story.

But I’ll drop it now, though it’ll come up at another time, I’m sure.

As usual this is about election tactics and nothing more. What is it about the GOP that you so ardently support, especially at the Federal level?
Voting GOP at the local level as a reaction to the Chicago machine I can accept, since that machine probably is an endless fount of corruption.
But voting GOP at the Federal level is indisputably a vote for creationism, neo-confederacy, misogyny, racism, homophobia and a whole host of other pathologies.

No, not end story. This is wrong. This has been debunked over and over, but you refuse to believe this. Advocating for people NOT GETTING FUCKING KILLED BY THE GUNS YOUR WORSHIP is not advocating a political party. How the fuck do you even equate that? Is living instead of being shot now a partisan issue? Furthermore, GUNS ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE. This is not hard.
And what part of politics is not a team sport do you not understand? These are peoples’ lives that are being fucked with, not a sports game.
Learn some god damn mother fucking empathy. NOW. Not “later”, none of that “oh, I just can’t do that” shit, no other lame excuses to not change yourself for the better. Seriously, it still continues to elude you. Everyone is capable of empathy and you should be no different.

“Patriarchy is God’s umbrella of protection. By honoring and submitting to their husbands, wives receive the privileges of their spiritual protection. If a wife resists her husband’s instructions, she forfeits her place under his protection - not just for herself, but for also for her children.”
Escape from Duggarville: How playing the good Christian housewife almost killed me
At the women’s shelter, I was given a form to complete … I wrote three pages describing the situation in our home, and after reading what I had written, the crisis volunteer said to me, “The judge will not grant you a protection order unless you actually accuse your husband of abuse.”
I told her that I didn’t really think my husband was “technically” abusive, and in fact, I had no doubt that he truly loved me and the kids. He always put us first … he basically centered his entire life around us! We were a good Christian family. The Bible commands husbands to “love your wives as Christ loved the church.” That’s the sort of godly man I was married to: a true patriarch who ruled his home according to God’s principles for marriage and family.
. …
“So,” the woman at the domestic violence shelter asked me, “if he’s such a great, loving husband and father, what are you doing here? Why do you need a protection order?”
From Raw Story, not paged.
