Obama Forms Coalition of Arab States to Take Action Against ISIS, Right Wing (And Greenwald) Confused, Angry

Strategy
World • Views: 37,804

It’s bizarre to watch the right wing news sites trying to settle on a way to spin President Obama’s action against ISIS inside Syria; they alternate from hand-wringing fear that Obama isn’t doin’ it right, to attacking Obama for doin’ it at all, to completely ignoring the fact that Obama put together a historic coalition of Sunni Arab Muslim states as partners.

They love the bombing part, but it’s Obama doing it. Cognitive whiplash!

But it sure looks like Obama did have a strategy to deal with ISIS after all.

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday hailed the American-led coalition that conducted airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria on Monday night, declaring, “We’re going to do what is necessary to take the fight to this terrorist group.”

Speaking on the South Lawn of the White House just before leaving for New York City to attend the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Obama emphasized that the extensive operation had included Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

“America is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with these nations on behalf of our common security,” Mr. Obama said. “The strength of this coalition makes clear to the world that this is not just America’s fight alone.”

But look who’s on the exact same page as the far right on this one, ignoring the coalition of Muslim partners and attacking Obama for “bombing a predominantly Muslim country:”

Does Greenwald prefer Syria to this “inspiring group?”

It’s lunchtime. Have some derp:

Joseph Farah: Obama Is Faking War With ISIS

He did, however, provide arms and munitions and your tax dollars to those rebels. Most or all of it wound up in the hands of ISIS. Thus, Obama, more than anyone else, actually fed and nursed and gave aid and comfort to ISIS. He incubated the monster it has become.

Now Obama is using the crisis he created to get what he wanted more than a year ago - another shot at undermining Assad’s government. He’s going back to the well with what he describes as a strategy to defeat ISIS by supporting Assad’s Sunni opposition.

Why?

I can only assume the reason is that Obama is not really at war with ISIS.

First off, I will admit to being a prior GG fan when he was at Salon. I read all of his columns and have read (I think) all of his books. However, since I’ve been reading here you guys have mostly turned my thinking towards him especially in regards to how he has handled Edward Snowden and all of those leaks. I also understand you guys, in general, dislike GG because of his bombastic nature and his exaggeration and half-truths with regards to a lot of topics as well as probably some other things I’m not listing.

But I have to ask why is it wrong for him to question what legal authority Obama has to bomb ISIL within Syria? Why is it wrong for him to point out that our coalition of partners don’t exactly have the best track record of human rights on the planet? Why is it wrong to point out that attacking ISIL like this only strengthens their numbers and aids in their recruitment? Is it because GG is the one pointing it out? Or do none of you have any concern about these questions?

ISIL should be dealt with no doubt, but they should be dealt with by taking out leadership which we are incredibly capable of doing. Allow interested parties in the region to do their own bombing and let’s stay out of it for once. Is it wrong for wanting that?

I’m not trolling, either. I’m generally curious about the above questions from those of you who want to answer.

re: #24 rhuarc

Some of your questions are valid ones.

I don’t pretend for a moment that GG actually thinks about them or gives a shit about the answers. All of his actions since the Snowden story broke have shown that he doesn’t care about the consequences of his actions, just how much they make him money and if he can attack the government he despises.

It is also worth noting that while the partners for this may not have the best human rights records, they are also all predominantly Sunni countries - as is Syria. Having partners in the region is important on this because it absolutely should not just be the US stomping in - or even a coalition of Western states - because that would be viewed by the folks in the region as continued meddling. Some will view it this way anyway, but here you have other folks joining in on saying “this is a problem and we will help.” Matters to some.

45 Charles Johnson  Sep 23, 2014 10:34:33am

re: #24 rhuarc

Greenwald will be opposed to anything Obama does, regardless of the “human rights records” of the partners. That’s just his latest pretext. As far as Greenwald is concerned, there’s NO country on Earth that has a good record on human rights; the only countries he doesn’t criticize for this are the ones with truly awful human rights violations, like Russia and China and Syria.

His latest article is just another intellectually dishonest hit piece, written from a nihilist viewpoint that would let ISIS just continue to do whatever they please.

I’m not trolling, either. I’m generally curious about the above questions from those of you who want to answer.

I am usually for going after leadership in most cases. And in doing it as stealthily as possible.

However, I am wondering if part of this type of bombing is to send a message to all the wanna-be types that are joining ISIS as an evil lark. Maybe if a few of the hanger-on types get a feel for seeing what being a terrorist gets you they might pack up and go back to their countries.

Plus, if they are stupid enough to have tried to become an army that takes territory and tries to hold it, then they become open for traditional military responses…like bombing.

I bet there is a combination of methods going on. The bombing might not last all that long once they take out easy targets. Once ISIS is on the run, then I expect the stealthy methods to take over and they will go after them one by one, as Obama has done since taking office.

Now about Greenwald. I think what bothers most people about Greenwald is his arrogant attention generating ways and his seeming hate for America, even though he will come to the country to speak and sell books for his own reward. And, he is just such a putz. If he wasn’t such an attention whore he might actually have a larger audience.

His methods are also to be questioned. He writes to attract outrage and buries the real facts that water down his own bombast if he shows any facts at all. In some ways he is writing fiction and selling it as hard news journalism.

Sometime in the recent years he has decided to go all in on selling fear and that to me makes him an opportunist, not a serious writer. I don’t trust him, so I don’t trust his writing.

I don’t doubt that the US is already doing what they can to take out the heads of the hydra but I sure as hell don’t think it will be easy. Do I like our continued involvement in the ME, not really, but at least this time, it’s not entirely the West that is participating here. Granted, most of the allies are folks that have bought their equipment from us, received their training from us and are “generally” aligned with us, but they’re actively participating this time instead of it being a seen/perceived as outsiders to the region, these nations have a vested interest in bringing the extremism under control if they truly want stability.

This has better “buy in” than our grand coalition in either Afghanistan or Iraq, as such, I actually appreciate the fact that the administration held our supposed regional allies feet to the fire to be involved in helping to try and combat fundamentalist extremist elements as opposed to believing that we’ll simply be greeted as liberators.

LOLOL

I’ve posted Sufi dhikr here and received updings for it.

The charge that LGF is currently “Islamophobic” is laughable at best. Anti-extremist…yes, as am I. I have no patience for the likes of Islamic State, or for that matter, even extreme and narrowly dogmatic interpretations of Islam such as Salafism, which in personal opinion, is a cancer that’s spread throughout the Ummah. But I also have a strong dislike for any form of fundamentalism, be it Muslim, or Christian, or Buddhist, or Hindu or what have you. Fundamentalism is toxic to civil society and civil discourse.

And my generally center-left socio-political views have been with me for a long time. I have an aversion to injustice and nothing but the most vehement disdain for those who would seek to impose tyranny on others, especially when it’s done under the rubric of some utopian fantasy.

There certainly are legitimate questions about how to handle ISIS, but Glenn is an anti-interventionist, so it’s fatuous to think one can have a serious meaningful discussion with him about it.

The problem isn’t that he’s an anti-interventionist, it’s that he’s a dishonest interlocutor. He’s never gotten over arguing like a lawyer. And I don’t mean that as a sneer at the legal profession, but your goal - and hence your methods - as an advocate in an adversarial proceeding are different than as a political partisan, a military strategist, or just someone trying to help people understand wtf is going on and how it affects them.

My problem with Bush’s FP was how misguided it was. Oh we’ve invaded Afghanistan because of 9/11? Fine. Let’s get OBL. And then not even a year later he’s like “Hey actually AQ had help from Saddam Hussein and I know how much we hate him because hey evil bastard gassed his own people and did I forget to mention he tried to kill my Dad too.” The Bush admin’s FP was like my childhood obsessions. I’d have one obsession and drop it as soon as another came up. That’s cute if you’re a child with Asperger’s Syndrome. It though OTOH is a terrible FP. Some question the legality, but this time our legislators are not in serious opposition. We still have the old AUMF which applies in terms of any terrorist base that presents and imminent threat.

To me just IMO, the guy lost all credibility with his whole approach on Snowden.

And the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 might give some authority to the Obama admin for the actions. The actual threat part would have to be there. And I am hearing that they are saying that there was actionable evidence of imminent attacks on the UK and/or USA.

It is not just the dudebro squad and the RW guys after Obama. He is taking heat from the left as well. What a hopelessly distant comparison.

Huffpo headline

CONGRESS ENABLING ‘CHENEY WAR DOCTRINE’

The legislative branch adjourned its business at the end of last week to tend to elections. In doing so, it left unresolved the issue of authorizing the war that President Barack Obama would start days later. Congressional inaction didn’t upend the White House’s plans; the administration had already claimed it had legal authority to launch such strikes in Syria.

But by leaving town before the president started operations, lawmakers may have done serious harm to their own institution, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) argued in an interview with The Huffington Post. Not only had they diminished the standing of Congress with respect to the executive branch, they also may have given unintended consent to a Dick Cheney-like vision of presidential war powers.

“[Congress has] sort of allowed the Cheney pre-emptive war doctrine to exist by another name,” Kaine said. “In this instance, they allowed the president to say, ‘ISIL [the Islamic State] is the bad guys, and I can go after them even though there has been testimony that they pose no imminent threat of attack on the United States.’ If the president just gets to do this without Congress, then we will be embracing the Cheney pre-emptive war doctrine, which I think is just brutally wrong.”

…”I think the damage would be enormous,” Kaine said of the possibility that Congress may never actually take a vote. “It is highly immoral to ask servicemen and women to risk their lives around a mission if the president feels that it is inconvenient to ask Congress to bless it, or members of Congress are afraid of the political consequence of blessing it.”

re: #24 rhuarc

Sure, there are legitimate questions, but GG is the wrong one to ask them. His is an extremely personal agenda.

Where was he on the legality of Putin’s aggression? And yes, it is relevant when he touts the “patriotism” of Snowden. Or what about the living conditions and rights of the people in his country of residency? Where is he there?

He doesn’t care about the people, only his ideology.
Anything Obama is for, GG is against. And as far as I am aware he has never apologized for his total support of GWB in his WOT. He was not worried about any stinkin laws back then.

But hey…dont bring that up to him or you are an Obama apologist.

As far as agreeing with Obama now, I do have concerns. But I do trust that he has taken the time to look at every angle. That doesn’t mean I am totally convinced, but reflexive disagreement just for the sake of it is pretty ugly in some corners.

re: #63 HappyWarrior

Glenn Greenwald is best described in a JFK quote from the speech he was going to give in Dallas the day he died.
There will always be dissident voices heard in the land, expressing opposition without alternatives, finding fault but never favor, perceiving gloom on every side and seeking influence without responsibility. Those voices are inevitable.”
The whole speech is good. It’s too bad he never gave it.
acorn.net

Yes, expressing opposition without alternatives is so easy to do. Armchair critics everywhere with nothing to substantive to contribute. What exactly should President Obama do to handle ISIS?

Saw the name Justin Lee. Don’t know who that is. The only Justin Lee I can find in Hollywood is the kid who played Annyong Bluth on Arrested Development. Not sure if it’s the same guy. Be a hoot if it was. I’ve heard the show’s going to be set in LA. Not sure what time period. Justin Lin by the way. I misread.

I believe it’s the director of most of Fast and Furious franchise.

Ron Paul is like the group that recorded “Smells Like Teen Spirit”?

That doesn’t even make any freaking sense.

Well she was talking about Ron Paul, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz in a musical context. She said Luap Nor was like Nirvana(the original), I think she said Rand was like Pearl Jam, and Cruz was like Stone Temple Pilots. Not really familiar with grunge so I can’t really understand what the analogy was outside the fact that Ron Paul IS THE ORIGINAL which he really isn’t since Ron Paul is basically Robert A. Taft with more religious extremism and actual alliances with racists rather than just being an idiot and way out of touch.

Maddow unfortunately is coming off like this, at least to me.

On the hand, she is asking hard questions about the mechanisms for going into war and if going after ISIS in Syria will make a difference.

On the other hand, she sometimes sounds like she’s genuinely confused about Obama using military force to deal with a terrorist organization. It’s like “I defend Obama from the RWNJs who accuse him of being soft on defense, but I must criticize him for doing anything militarily.”

Not that she should be an unquestioning cheerleader, but I get the feeling that if ISIS were to hit us hard somehow, she’d then be shitting on him for not doing enough.

I do not see any reason to think this is being handled anything like when we invaded Iraq to remove Saddam. It’s as if that geography requires the comparison despite a world of difference in circumstance and terror threat to the west. To say nothing of the threat to the locals.

I don’t either because I trust this admin more but OTOH I do understand why Congressmen like Kaine and Van Hollen want this done with Congressional approval. The way Obama handles this will be precedent for how future presidents of both parties will deal with a similiar type situation. I definitely do agree with you about not burdening the present admin with the mistakes of the last one.

I just call them Khawarij.

From their essentially political position, the Kharijites developed extreme doctrines that further set them apart from both mainstream Sunni and Shi⯺ Muslims. The Kharijites were particularly noted for adopting a radical approach to Takfir, whereby they declared other Muslims to be unbelievers and therefore deemed them worthy of death.
