HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WLS) — An 8-year-old boy paralyzed in the Highland Park parade shooting has returned to school, his parents said in a statement.

Cooper Roberts joined his twin brother, Luke, in third grade this week, marking “a very significant and special milestone” in his “slow, yet remarkable transition back to school,” said his parents, Jason and Keely Roberts. The boy’s life-threatening injuries made it seem like returning to school was something his family could only hope for.

“We were so nervous, we couldn’t sleep the night before his first day back. We cried in the parking lot as he wheeled himself into the school, cried as we pulled out of the parking lot,” they said. “We were just a mess! He loved every minute, and his exact words were, ‘If I had not been shot, paralyzed, and had to be in a wheelchair, it would have been a perfect school day, but it was a really great day! I loved it!’”

Cooper Roberts update: 8-year-old paralyzed in Highland Park parade shooting joins twin in 3rd grade (ABC-7 Chicago)

Well, since Nury Martinez is a Democrat, I’m guessing that while she may be hitting El Camino de Grifto in the near future, it probably won’t be the usual RWNJ circuit….

Passing this along…the writer of the article is practically the only scholar out there who has done work on Mark Driscoll (the pastor of the church I used to protest until the presence of long guns on campus was made known to me). So she knows what she’s talking about here. I also like that Jeff Sharlet pointed out that the headline was not accurate, that what is happening in Virginia is a danger to *all* schools.

Depending on the jurisdiction, you may be required to have shutoffs installed by code.

Here in NJ, we have to have shutoffs for water (sinks) and gas at the fixture. You can’t merely have a shutoff in another room or basement.

And for bathrooms, you can have water shutoffs built into the shower cartridge adapter (Delta has shutoffs as part of their universal installation kit.

I’ll second the recc: it makes life way easier if (however infrequently) you have to shut the water off, you can do it as “localized” as possible.

Not, obviously, a similar situation , but we learned that lesson the hard way in our former apt. building in the City. To save costs, they had built the place (120 units) with just three main water feeds for the various sections. And no shutoffs outside of the individual fixtures. So the smallest plumbing job in any of the apartments required a third of the building to have its water cut off. PITA.

On October 9, 2022, an audio recording of a conversation with Martinez and other councilmembers Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de León regarding gerrymandering was leaked anonymously onto Reddit. In the meeting, Martinez stated, “Fuck that guy … He’s with the Blacks”, referring to District Attorney George Gascón. Martinez also insulted fellow Councilmember Mike Bonin’s adopted child, saying “This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, I’ll bring him right back.” Martinez also referred to the child as a “little monkey” in Spanish.
…..
Martinez would later provide a statement in the Los Angeles Times apologizing, “In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me. I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry.en.wikipedia.org

Racists are always give a limited apology when they’re held accountable. But people don’t say these things in a “heated moment” unless they’re used to talking like this in private all the time.

From what I have seen, Russia launched something over 80 srbm (Short Range Ballistic Missiles) and cruise missiles. Approximately half hit targets, mostly civilian infrastructure, including apartment buildings and power stations.

The likelihood is that this operation was not in response to the Kerch Bridge operation.

It takes time to determine operational requirements, determine targets, allocate and move munitions, allocate and deploy launchers including ships and planes, and then coordinate them. Operations like these usually require 1-2 weeks to plan and carry out.

One possibly motivating factor is that the first of the IRIS-T air defense systems has just been delivered to Ukraine. Iirc, it is slated to be deployed to Kyiv.

Another motivating factor might be assignment of the Surovikin to oversee the Ukraine War. Violence directed at civilians is reportedly part of his method of operation.

Kevin Bacon is opening up about being a victim of Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

Bacon was a guest on the Monday edition of the Smartless podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett.

During the conversation, Hayes asked about Bacon’s involvement in the biggest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history. The hosts repeatedly said that if the actor was not comfortable speaking on the topic, they would cut the segment out of the show.

Bacon has previously remained quiet about the incident, only saying that “it was a bad day,” during a 2017 interview with The Guardian and citing that the elderly people that Madoff scammed were the real victims.

During the podcast, Bacon said he and his wife Kyra Sedgwick “had most of our money in Madoff.”

Valeriy Tarasenko, who is about to turn 45, survived the shooting, which occurred in Estérel, about 95 kilometres north of Montreal. However, the suspect or suspects in what has been described as a “targeted shooting” are still at large, the Sûreté du Québec reported on Saturday.

“We have nothing more to say than it’s a 44-year-old man who was injured, his life is not in danger and an investigation is underway,” SQ Sgt. Marythé Bolduc said. The police would not say, for example, if they have leads on the suspect or suspects, whether Tarasenko was, as initially reported, shot in the hotel’s parking lot and whether Tarasenko was accompanied at the time of the shooting.

Article content
“As far as I know, Valery [sic] has never worked and he is involved in some unclear activities,” Tarasenko’s step father-in-law, Yury Manakhov, stated in an affidavit filed in Quebec Superior Court in 2012. Manakhov successfully sued his step-daughter, Anna Kovalenko Tarasenko, claiming $370,000 in unpaid loans.

Tarasenko is a former associate of Inna Yashchyshyn, who made international headlines this year after it was revealed she had gained access to Trump and members of his inner circle at his Mar-a-Lago estate by pretending to be a Rothschild family heiress. A picture taken of her next to the former president on his golf course was widely published.

Brussels World’s Fair 1958

Another exhibition at the Belgian pavilion was the Congolese village that some have branded a human zoo.

The Ministry of Colonies built the Congolese exhibit, intending to demonstrate their claim to have “civilized” the “primitive Africans.” Native Congolese art was rejected for display, as the Ministry claimed it was “insufficiently Congolese.” Instead, nearly all of the art on display was created by Europeans in a purposefully primitive and imitative style, and the entrance of the exhibit featured a bust of King Leopold II, under whose colonial rule millions of Congolese died. The 700 Congolese chosen to be exhibited by the Ministry were educated urbanites referred to by Belgians as évolués, meaning literally “evolved,” but were made to dress in “primitive” clothing, and an armed guard blocked them from communicating with white Belgians who came to observe them. The exotic nature of the exhibit was lauded by visitors and international press, with the Belgian socialist newspaper Le Peuple praising the portrayal of Africans, saying it was “in complete agreement with historical truth.” However, in mid-July the Congolese protested the condescending treatment they were receiving from spectators and demanded to be sent home, abruptly ending the exhibit and eliciting some sympathy from European newspapers.

This was at the World’s Fair in 1958??

JFC! That sort of racist shit was common in the colonial era (like pre-WWI) - “native villages” with “typical” inhabitants were a staple of the old-timey expos, but 1958?

At least these Congolese (some of whom, at least, were “evolved” enough to get in touch with the newspapers) got to go home. ISTR one Fair that featured an exhibition of a village of Congolese Pygmies, where the “exhibits” were basically caged up at night.

At this point the GOP is just intentionally flying their flags.

In the history of this country, Columbus plays no more role than the Vikings who did the tourist thing in Canada.

It was explorers like Cabrillo and De Soto and Hudson who actually went into what is now the USA.

And of course the entire history of European colonization of what is now the US is covered in a cloud of genocide.

The real history is something that the GOP does not want to explore, because doing so unravels a great deal of their narratives.

The Belgian Congo is interesting because it sets up the standard by which other colonial powers judged themselves humane. They kept doing massacres and starving people but argued they were better than Leopold because the process wasn’t as graphic.

Of course, nobody talked about how many European men made their nest egg running a rubber plantation.

After WW2 the colonial empires again found themselves less-guilty, compared to the Axis…and then stole more land and did more atrocities in Africa.

Fascists always get power because they’re the countermove to any variety of socialism—they sound like they’re bringing revolution but actually they’re just hardening the existing hierarchy. Capitalists tend to invite fascists into power because they believe they can surf the coming violent reification and make the number go up.
