Officials in the tourist town of Kennebunk Maine ordered a restaurant owner to remove the words “Hebrew National Beef Franks” from his sun umbrellas.
KENNEBUNK, Maine—A restaurant owner is suing officials in this tourist enclave for ordering him to block out the words “Hebrew National Beef Franks” on sun umbrellas outside his eatery.
The town says Brian Bartley violated an ordinance that limits restaurant signs to three per establishment. Bartley says the move smacks of anti-Semitism.
“Had the umbrella said ‘Christian National Hot Dogs,’ I don’t think there would have been any issues,” said Bartley’s lawyer, Ronald Coles.
Bartley claims code enforcement officer Paul Demers said when issuing the citation last July that the umbrellas were “personally offensive to me, and they have to go.”
Neither Demers nor town Manager Barry Tibbetts returned calls seeking comment Thursday.
