IDF Raids ISM
In the It’s About Time department, the IDF raided the offices of the Palestinian International Solidarity Movement today, detaining two “activists.”
IDF forces raided the Bethlehem offices of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement Friday, confiscating documents and CDs.
Two activists were detained, Israel Radio reports. The army has stated that they were in the country illegally.
One ISM member, Raphael Cohen, told reporters recently that the two British suicide bombers who detonated a bomb at Mike’s Place in Tel Aviv had visited the ISM apartment in Gaza before setting off to blow themselves up. ISM states that it “recognize[s] the Palestinian right to resist Israeli violence and occupation via legitimate armed struggle”, but it has strenuously denied any connection with the two suicide bombers.
Nonetheless, the two Britons apparently passed themselves off as pro-Palestinian peace activists, which gained them freedom of movement in and out of Israel.
Note that the ISM’s own web site contains instructions on how to enter Israel under false pretenses. And also note the domain name: palsolidarity.org.
And what post about the Pal Solidarity Movement is complete without a photo of Saint Rachel Corrie, teaching the little children of Gaza?
UPDATE: This Reuters story (hat tip: The Viking) has more info about the raid, including this interesting tidbit:
Military sources confirmed Friday’s raid and said the army would now oblige foreigners entering Palestinian-ruled Gaza to sign a waiver absolving Israel of responsibility for their safety, a procedure already in place for Israeli civilians.
Reuters, of course, uncritically repeats the ISM lie that Saint Rachel was protecting a home from being demolished:
Two months ago, an Israeli bulldozer crushed to death American ISM member Rachel Corrie as she tried to block the demolition of a home in Rafah.
According to the IDF, no homes were targeted for demolition that day. The bulldozer was clearing brush used to hide smuggler’s tunnels. The propaganda never stops.
