Did anti-Obama campaign contributions dictate which Chrysler dealers were shuttered?
Is Barack Obama’s middle name Hussein?
Does a bear shit in the woods?

I was very skeptical about this at first, and frankly, I still am. There seem to be some rather bad actors getting into it. But I believe that this issue deserves more research, and I’m glad that people are looking into it. I wish they’d do so in a more systematic way, though. For one thing, it’s not enough simply to find a lot of the owners of the closed dealerships who donated to Republicans. It’s not enough to also show that few of the owners of the closing dealerships were Democratic donors. Unfortunately, the only way to prove a relationship is to also look at the dealerships that aren’t closing, and then do something like a Chi-square analysis looking at the percentages of Democratic and Republican donors among closing and non-closing dealerships.
I would love it if someone could find a list of all Chrysler dealerships and their owners. I still don’t know of one. You can find a list of all Chrysler dealers at this site. It lists them by state. I’ve chosen Alabama here, but obviously you can click on other states too. It may or may not be necessary to get the lists of Dodge and Jeep dealers separately.
The problem is finding out who owns the dealerships. There are some tips on that here. One approach is to go to this page, which links to all 50 states’ Secretary of State offices, where you can search a database of all licensed businesses. The problem is, none of those databases list the owners of a business. Many list the officers of the corporations, which is almost as good. Some list only the registered agent or contact, which isn’t helpful, because that could just be the name of the secretary or attorney who takes care of paperwork with the state government.
After looking through directorblue, it seems the most thorough work on this is being done by Joey Smith, who is currently looking in individual markets, and looking for political differences between the dealerships that are staying open, and the ones that are closing. Look at this, for example.
