Taiwan could be a target for many of the same reasons but I think an attack on India is more likely. In the ruthless calculus of the Chicom leadership, Taiwan could not cause as many losses as India unless the US intervened but it would, by itself, present roughly the same risk of defeat and possibly of disaster (the million man swim). Even if successful it would not accomplish the goal of strengthening Pakistan and eliminating a real economic competitor.

Could this not be just Indian paranoia? I say that because of statements like the following in the article:

In addition to this, “The growing irrelevance of Pakistan, their [China’s] right hand that operates against India on their behest, is increasing the Chinese nervousness,” he said, […]

Given the long influence of the US in Pakistan, it doesn’t make sense to call Pakistan China’s “right hand”.

There is a long history of close relations between China and Pakistan, beginning almost as soon as the communist conquest of China was complete in 1949 and possbily before that.
In particular, China stepped in to become Pakistan’s main arms supplier after the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war and the resulting US embargo. The embargo was not lifted until after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. China and Pakistan have each seen the other as an effective counter-weight to India. China and the US shared this interest during the Cold War, when India was strongly pro-Soviet.
The wikipedia article on China-Pakistan relations has some problems but it is a good overview of this history.
In my own experience, Pakistanis consider the US an unreliable ally and often emphasize that their relationship with China is “time-tested” and based on “trust and respect.”
