UPDATE: Traffic Flowing Again at Rio Grande City Bridge
RIO GRANDE CITY Traffic at the Rio Grande City is once again flowing in both directions, but officials on both sides of the border remain on alert after reports of violence in Mexico.
U.S. officials were forced to divert traffic at the Rio Grande City bridge to other bridges after an incident in Camargo this morning.
Were told around 10 a.m. gunmen tried to storm the bridge on the Mexican side. They kidnapped the bridge director, Jorge Parral, and his secretary. They remain missing.
The customs office in Mexico was closed after the incident and no one was allowed to cross into Mexico.
Traffic was allowed into the U.S. from Mexico, but customs officers were checking all incoming vehicles.
Our main objective here is to keep our area secure and safe, says CPB spokesperson Eddie Perez.
Hours later traffic at the Rio Grande City bridge was once again flowing in both directions, but anyone crossing into Mexico is being advised to use caution.
Earlier this afternoon there was also reports of a gun battle right across the border from Roma.
Shots could be heard on the U.S. side and a plume of smoke could be seen from the bridge.
People crossing into Mexico from the Roma bridge were also being advised to use caution.
