The American Prospect - More On The Bagram Habeas Ruling.
Thoughtful analysis of the recent habeus ruling in regards to Bagram detention facility. As I read this article, I was pulled back, once again to the 2008, Obama Inaugural address and in particular this statement:
“As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake. “
- President Barack Obama
I was one of the 3 million people jammed onto the Mall that bitter cold Tuesday, and this line in particular resonated with me. I’m not sure how to square, or if it is possible to square, Obama’s Bagram moves with the rejection of the false choice of trading safety for ideals.
