The 'About Vlaams Belang and Sweden Democrats' link is broken.

Aren't we a bit over the top here? Here is what Wikipedia (not notorious for being right-wing) has to say.

The Sweden Democrats have complained about difficulties buying advertising space due to the media banning the party from advertisement,[32] which has been critisised by free speech organisations.[33] On June 16, 2006, however Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet decided to stop their boycott. Expressen though still retains the ban on Sweden Democrat advertising.[34]

During the 1990s, it is known that some outspokenly far-right persons has been involved with the party.[15] The party was supported financially in the 1998 general election by the French National Front,[35][36] and for the 2004 European election by Belgian Bernard Mengal.[37][38]
[edit] The Sweden Democrats' response to the controversy

The party dissociates itself from all forms of totalitarianism and racism and states that it considers the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights a fundamental component of its politics. Furthermore, the party says that its fundamental goal is to combine the principle of social and economic justice with traditional conservative values. For this reason, the party believes that it is not easily pinpointed on the traditional left-right political spectrum in Swedish politics.[26] Also, the Sweden Democrats say they have expelled all openly extremist members from the party, and refuse membership to anyone who has extremist views. The Sweden Democrats have complained of a media boycott, which they say has resulted in constant negative characterisations of the party.

Your nic is old enough to know exactly what the V.B., Swedish Democrats, et al are about. Charles covered the subject extensively. Click the link above and then go see the tags to that article. All you need to know is there.

Marjoriemoon,

I do understand (maybe precisely because I am so old). In the early 1960s, you could have said that same thing about the Democrats - and been right. Even Robert Byrd began to see the light by the late 1960s (well maybe by the 1970s). But it took broadening the base of the party from the inside as well as battles in which some people had to give their lives.

I supported Charles' statement:

LGF is as anti-jihad as anyone on the web; but I do not accept that we’ve reached the point where we should embrace these kinds of people as allies, simply because they’re hitching a ride on the bandwagon and saying the right things when the spotlight is on them.

However, that was 2007. It appears that things may be changing and the party may be broadening itself. I certainly agree its too early to tell and caution is warranted. But the title "Robert Spencer visits Swedish Nazis." is, at least to me, a bit over the top. JFK visited U.S. Klu Klux Klaners (and make no mistake; in 1960, many Democrats, from Florida to and through Maryland were) and converted them. Spencer is not Kennedy, for sure. But support for moderate elements (in a society that does not tolerate any dissent from multiculturalism) is not the same thing as "visiting Nazis."

The Dixiecrats, to whom I believe you're referring, was a very short lived group that BROKE AWAY from the Democrat party. They started in 1948, but by the 1952 election, were already disbanded. By the 1960s, the majority of them joined the GOP, not the Democrats.

Further, the Dixiecrats were concentrated in the South. Northern Democrats did not join them. The Democratic Party was against everything the Dixiecrats represented, particularly segregation which was one of the hottest issues at the time.

Please do not equate the Democrat party with these racists. They are not even remotely related. And to suggest that JFK had some connection to the KKK is probably the most ridiculous thing I've read in a long time.

In 1930, the KKK had 30,000 members. That dwindled to about 5,000 by 1980. By the year 2000, there were approximately 3,000 members, but that number has been growing again in the last few years.

The VB, the Swedish Democrats and like kind groups have leaders currently in their midst with ties to Nazi groups. IIRC, many were part of Nazi youth groups, not German youth, but Nazi groups. They've been together for decades and are continuing to grow, sadly with the help of delusional Americans like Spencer and Geller. Even so, you can't make an equivalent comparison to any American party.

Robert Byrd was not a Dixiecrat. He was a senior member of the Democratic party until a few days ago. And yes, he was a disgusting raciest until the 1970s (and actually that is polite).

And yes, they hated Catholics (and lots of other people for that matter). However, that is the point. Associating with a party that has a few racists due to a historical legacy, does not make you a racist, particularly if the party is growing and changing to become more centrist.
