President Obama to slam Republicans on jobless relief
President Barack Obama will blast Republicans again this morning, this time from the Rose Garden, for blocking extension of unemployment benefits to out-of-work Americans.
The 10:30 a.m. statement, combined with his weekly radio address Saturday on the same theme, advances an attempt as soon as Tuesday by Majority Leader Harry Reid to pass the $34 billion benefits package.
Reid has timed the vote to the arrival of Charleston attorney Carte Goodwin, who is set to be is sworn into the Senate seat left by the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.). Goodwin’s appointment is expected to give Reid the 60th vote needed to pass the bill by a filibuster-proof majority.
In the statement, the president “will have strong words for Republicans who have previously supported unemployment extensions under Republican presidents but refuse to offer relief to middle-class families today,” said a White House official, previewing the president’s remarks.
