This is one of those stories that causes me no end of unhappiness. It is another case of sometimes Rabbaim say the darndest things. In fact, sometimes in their attempts to be “holy” they do nothing more than make chillul Hashem.

Some things that should be noted for any Jewish reader (or non-Jewish reader). There is a principle in Torah, that if a commandment is repeated, it is not only of particular importance, but it has multiple layers to be understood and applied.

The law which is repeated the most - surpassing all others - is be good to a convert. This is stated 36 times in 36 different ways. I could digress intot he importance of 36 as well. For the record, there is nothing wrong with marrying a convert. The entire point of the Book of Ruth is that the royal line is descended from a convert. There should have been no scandal from the get go.

Unfortunately, rabbinic pissing wars over who is a convert - the status of their conversion and how to treat converts are nothing new amongst the ultra-othodox. Unfortunately, some observant Jews - who apparantly have nothing better to do (like read what the Torah actually says on such matters) - are too busy being “holy” to see converts as equals. It is pathetic. It is utterly pathetic.

Then there is the other side of this. I detest Naturei Karta. I passionately detest them. Yet, seeing their leader brought low by such a thing brings me no joy and it bothers me that it might please others.

The Vicious Babushka  Jul 25, 2010 • 8:28:44pm

I thought this article at Haaretz was very interesting and not at all haredi-bashing according to their usual style.

It’s my opinion, and also the opinion of others that I knew while living in Mea Shearim in the 1970’s, that Amram Blau really did fall in love with Ruth and he defied his family and the rabbinic authorities in order to be with her. Even though I disagree with everything else that he stood for, in this one instance he “followed his heart.” It really is a love story.
