Poll: Colo. GOP Voters Put Tancredo at Top of List for Governor - Washington Wire - WSJ
Former Rep. Scott McInnis may be losing his front-runner status in the race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Colorado.
A poll conducted by SurveyUSA for the Denver Post found that the McInnis plagiarism scandal appears to be hurting him.
Asked who — among a list of prominent politicians — would make the party’s strongest candidate for governor, just 19% of registered Republicans picked McInnis. His opponent in the Aug. 10 primary, Dan Maes, had the backing of 13%. Last month, a Denver Post /9 News Poll found McInnis crushing Maes, 57% -29%, among likely primary voters. The latest poll was conducted Thursday; the margin of error for Republican voters ranged from 4.8 percentage points to 5.7 percentage points, depending on the question.
GOP voters’ top choice: Former Rep. Tom Tancredo, best known for his fiery opposition to illegal immigration and his habit of unleashing provocative soundbites. Some 29% of those polled said he was their man.
“It’s flattering as heck,” Tancredo said. “But there are so many huge if’s involved here that it’s hard to get too excited.”
