I think that it’s always been like this in America. Some of the early political cartoons were absolutely vicious. There were violent divisions between industrial and agricultural (slave) sections of the country, between those who believed in stronger state governments over a national government—which eventually erupted in outright war.

After the war, again there was great tension between industry (cities) and the country, union and management, American citizens and native Americans, immigrants and those who had more established residency. Again this turned into outright war within our borders.

In the 1930s, the weather itself seemed to attack the country, and there was tremendous rancor caused by the Depression, Prohibition, isolationists, internationalists—until one brief unifying moment in the country—World War II, which changed all of the social rules within the US.

The post World War II era is relatively benign compared to where we have been. The battle for Civil Rights was mostly a legal battle, compared to—even the 1920s when the Klan marched through Washington DC. The unending conflict that has been a constant in the US has moved from the streets to the airwaves, to cyberspace.

The real violence that we face is with crime, presently. We’ve seemed to have chosen to fight our philosophical differences at the ballot box and through peaceful demonstrations, as was originally intended.

So, I can’t tell you what the future will hold, only that there is considerable historical momentum that says the tension will be constant, but that our mode of conflict resolution has changed for the better.

This coincides with my neo nazi post perfectly. This is an excellent post.
