NASA gets call to aid trapped Chilean miners
Grappling with the fragile psychology of 33 miners trapped half a mile below the Earth’s surface for months to come, the Chilean government has sought assistance from NASA.
The space agency has experience testing and training crew members for extended periods of isolation in orbit and beyond.
“NASA is prepared to provide such support as requested,” said John Yembrick, a NASA spokesman.
Chilean rescue workers digging a narrow, six-inch tunnel reached the trapped miners for the first time Sunday since the gold and copper mine collapsed Aug. 5.
