American Financial Group...our old friend Carl Lindner. Former owner of Chiquita Banana. Funder of Columbian paramilteray groups and linked to right wing death squads freedom fighters during the glorious years of the 1980's when we were letting large corporations fund the deaths liberation of peasants in Central America.

Previously known as United Fruit Company. Anybody heard of them?

United Fruit, ugh. About 20 years ago I read a book called Agony in the Garden: A Stranger in Central America by Edward Sheehan. Some of the stories about the horrors of 1980's Central America made me feel physically ill. Enough so that I swore off reading about the convergence of politics + vast corporate wealth for years. The capacity for evil—or perhaps I should say the probability of evil—when the two come together is enormous, especially when it happens in an under-developed or developing countries. I'm sure it could do the same in a developed country like the U.S., it would probably just take longer and cost more.

Recent events reminded me of the book and I managed to find a used copy in great condition online a few months ago. It's been sitting on my bookshelf, but I haven't quite worked up the nerve to begin reading it again.

This is what Teddy Roosevelt fought against so effectively, and the reason modern GOPers (aka Teabaggers and Koch suckers) take regular dumps on his legacy. Beyond disgusting. I can only console myself with the mental picture of Teddy's Mount Rushmore sculpture shooting lightening bolts from its eyes and zapping Gingrich, Boehner, Beck, etc to a smoking, sizzling crisp :D

Koch suckers, huh? LOL

Thanks for the TR article; I've bookmarked it for later reading.

The whole corporate thing really creeps me out. Sometimes I feel like we're already so far down that road that we might not be able to turn back, especially after the Citizens United v. FEC decision. Welcome to America, Inc. *shudder*

For a compassionate lefty, that was a depressing time. I worked for a bit in the early 80's in rural eastern North Carolina with some nuns who were assisting illegal political refugees, mostly from Guatemala. I didn't think much of my government then. I still think Elliot Abrams, the American official who provided cover for Central American dictators and held the ironic title of Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, should have been rewarded with lengthy jail time instead of a career in politics.

Lucky for him, when we meet in hell, he will be cock punched mercilessly.
