This is outstanding! I’ve just recently gotten the astronomy bug, but it’s been a bit demoralizing because there is just enough light pollution in my sky to make looking for even “easy” messier objects not all that easy. Still, one of the lovely things about astronomy as a hobby is that you can spend a lot of money at it, even if you don’t get much success, and still feel like maybe you’re doing something worthwhile with the evening. What else would I be doing at 3 a.m.?…well yes, there’s that, but other than that, what ELSE would I be doing at 3 a.m.?

This is eerie to me, science fiction come to life. I have been reading SF for over 50 years. It has always been taken for granted that exo-planets were out there, but actually seeing them and knowing where they are for sure is a kind of personal fulfillment, a logical inference of centuries standing confirmed by hard fact.
It is not for nothing that the Science Fiction Encyclopedia includes a lengthy article entitled “Science Fiction Overtaken by Events.”

Are any of you guys located in the Northwest? Up there in Goldendale, Washington, there is an observatory that is in a really perfect spot for its stated purpose. It’s right by the Colombia River in a rather flat area so there is almost no air pollution to worry about.

I love the fact that newly discovered exoplanets are so common they barely merit a blurb in a newspaper science section.
