Man gets 3 years in prison in deadly kidnapping of illegal immigrants
I thought the sentence was too light, until I read who died, and how.
A 26-year-old man whose kidnapping of a group of illegal border crossers turned deadly last March was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday.
Eleazar Garcia Valencia, 25, and Armando Villalobos Cervantes, 26, held a group of border crossers for ransom near Sasabe, according to court testimony.
Valencia told the group he had just lost a load of marijuana and he needed to recoup the money, said Deputy Pima County Attorney Casey McGinley.
Some of the 19 crossers attacked and beat Valencia and Cervantes and Valencia died.
Cervantes sought help from a homeowner, who called the U.S. Border Patrol.
The Border Patrol found Cervantes wandering along Arizona 286 about 16 miles north of the border.
Authorities found Valencia’s body about 10 miles west of that location.
