Ummm — what’s your point? I get it that there are raving extremist Islamists out there. Do you think the US is in danger of being taken over by Shariah? Or that even though they will probably keep that passage in the constitution in Egypt that the gov’t isn’t going to be run by fundamentalist extremists of the Zia al Haq / Saudi type and that the passage will be pretty much lip service? Egypt’s too down with the modern world, it’s too late for them to turn back. So is Turkey, and the extremists everywhere are becoming more marginalized and more of a minority.

Ah ah ah. You know that’s not his opinion. It’s closer to, when things are in chaos, it’s hard to predict the outcome, as all possibilities increase their potential to become actualities. You wouldn’t be up for predicting the outcomes in all of these countries, would you?

No one would.

Okay, I know people are gonna click on that link and read Qaradawi’s rantings, and I hate, hate, hate it when the fundie extremists cherry-pick stuff and use it to justify suspicion, hatred, and murder. It’s made worse when they are scholars who can’t even claim ignorance.

Perhaps instead of hating on people, they could try pondering some of this:

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing. {2:177}

Qaradawi says:

Receiving enemies in our own countries and visiting them in the occupied lands would remove such a psychological barrier that keeps us away from
them, and would bridge the gap that keeps the desire for Jihad against them
kindled in the hearts of the Ummah.

So then why does the Qur’an say this?

Those who believe (in the Qur’an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. {2:62}

And this?

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). {49:13}

And this?

Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. {2:190}

Oh, and the “slay them wherever you find them” part in the verses immediately following 2:190 above? Here’s a very good explanation of the context for that. It also covers the context for verses about fighting & slaying the pagans/infidels wherever they’re found. (Because I know that’s gonna come up sooner or later.)

Then Goldberg refers to as “a famously antisemitic hadith” that Qaradawi apparently pulled out of his hat:

The last day will not come unless you fight Jews. A Jew will hide himself behind stones and trees and stones and trees will say, “O servant of Allah - or O Muslim - there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.”’

That hadith is about a very specific event that precedes the Final Hour/Judgment Day. It happens after the arrival of the Mahdi, which is followed by the arrival of the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal), which is then followed by the return of Jesus (a.s.) who ends up doing battle with al-Dajjal—yes, I know Jews don’t consider him the Messiah, but we’re talking about Islam here. It refers to 1000 armed Jews who are supposed to choose to fight on the side of al-Dajjal against Jesus, therefore I don’t see how it can possibly have anything whatsoever to do with the present day, or with all Jews. This fundie stuff is such an absurd out of context stretch that it makes my head want to explode.

Okay, now you atheists can stop rolling your eyes over how crazy it all sounds to you! ;)
