Bill Donohue on Matt Stone and Trey Parker - ‘Real men would rip Muslims’
This has got to be one of the stupidest things I have read by a right winger - amongst the tsunami of stupidity they have produced in recent years.
Bill Donohue of The Catholic League is pissed off because South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker satirized Mormons in their new Broadway musical instead of teh Mooslims:
When Trey Parker and Matt Stone die, the obit page should label them as talented yet cowardly artists. After all, as Terry Teachout in the Wall Street Journal says, it takes no guts to bash Mormons on Broadway. Real men would rip Muslims. But the creators of “South Park” have already proven they aren’t men. They’re boys. And that is who this scatological exercise appeals to.
What Bill forgets is that Matt and Trey were receiving death threats from radical Muslims over a satirization of Islam they had done for South Park. Evidently, that isn’t manly enough for Bill.
The critics, of course, adore the musical. The New York Daily News and the New York Post are supposed to be competitors, but their play critics have the same sense of humor: they both like the part where “a giant middle finger to God” appears. The Los Angeles Times chuckles over a scene featuring genital mutilation of African women. AP loves the “running joke” about a man who has “maggots in his scrotum.” And Andrew Sullivan gets a big kick out of the part where they twist a Mormon teaching to read, “F**k You God in The C**t.”
Real men would admit they love bashing Mormons. But the critics are also mere boys. Sullivan praises the musical for its “humaneness.” The Los Angeles Times boasts of its “good intentions.” AP calls it a “pro-religion musical.” Newsday writes that it “seems smitten” to “do good.”
Now here’s where the real stupidity kicks in. Bill somehow finds a way to inject that into his commentary.
The reaction of homosexual reviewers is always fun to read. Sullivan justifies the Mormon bashing by saying we should judge “Mormonism by Mormons.” Ben Brantley of the New York Times is hot over the scene where there are a “few choice words for the God who let them [AIDS victims] wind up this way.” But if we were to judge homosexuals by what they do, we would know who caused them to wind up with AIDS. That would take real guts.
As Teachout observes, this production is made for “12-year-old boys who have yet to graduate from fart jokes to ‘Glee.’” It should do well.
In terms of downright idiocy, this injection of homophobia by Bill Donohue is only rivaled by a claim made last year by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, who said the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell would mean an increase of gay rape*:
“We are today releasing an analysis of publicly available documents which show that homosexuals in the military are three times more likely to commit sexual assaults than heterosexuals are relative to their numbers,” Sprigg said. “We believe this problem would only increase if the current law against homosexuality…were to be repealed.”
Sprigg said his “analysis” was military documents tracking sexual assault cases. According to his figures, 8.2% of sexual assaults reported to military authorities in fiscal 2009 were homosexual in nature.
“Yet homosexual activists themselves have admitted that less than 3% of Americans — 2.8% of men and 1.4% of women — are homosexual or bi-sexual,” Sprigg explained.
“Taken together,” he continued, “these figures suggest that homosexuals in the military are about 3x as likely to commit sexual assaults as heterosexuals are.”
And the “most common type of homosexual assault” according to Sprigg? “one in which the offender fondles or performs oral sex on a sleeping victim,” he said.
Ipso facto:
“If open homosexuality was permitted in the military, these numbers can only increase,” Sprigg said. “The number of homosexuals would grow, the threat of discharge for homosexual behavior would be eliminated and protected class status for homosexuals would make victims hesitant to report assaults and make commanders hesitant to punish them for fear of appearing homophobic.”
*Pete should keep his fantasies to himself.
