Land near Superior to be returned to Ojibwas
SUPERIOR - About 15 acres of land in Superior is about to be returned to an Indian tribe which lost it almost a century ago. The U.S. Interior Department has agreed to return land on Wisconsin Point to the Fond du Lac Chippewa band.
Tribal members were evicted from their village in 1918, and were treated like trespassers. Government records show that U.S. Steel wanted to build a dock there, and the village was in the company’s way. So were the graves of ancestors dating back 300 years. Many of those graves were removed, but many others remain. Tribal chairwoman Karen Diver says they’d like to use the land to care for the remaining gravesites. She said they’ve fought a bureaucratic battle for about a decade.
The deal will be finalized once paperwork from the General Services Administration is completed. Diver hopes the land transfer can be completed by summer.
