Man arrested over Newry van bomb
A MAN is being questioned in connection with the discovery of a 500lb bomb near Newry last week, police have confirmed.
The 26-year-old was detained in the Rostrevor area and has been taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite, a PSNI spokesperson said.
Serious traffic disruption was caused on the main Belfast to Dublin Road last Friday after a van, containing a wheelie bin packed with explosives, was abandoned at an A1 underpass.
Police described the device as “sophisticated and substantial” and claimed it could have caused huge devastation and even loss of life.
A senior PSNI officer indicated the bomb could have been destined for a town centre.
