Hamas, PA reject any peace plan without right of return
Sha’ath: Right of return is basic right Palestinians couldn’t give up; Hamas says strongly opposed to new US peace initiative.

Q. Why do they pretend?
A. Because they now believe the UN will award them a state without having to negotiate any further with Israel or compromise on anything, including the "right of return."

Oh, I agree. It's been heading this way for months.
But, in both Obama's defense & to his detriment, I truly believe that he did this on purpose: he came up w/a "peace plan" that he knew the terrorists would reject, but he is also continuing to put the (unfair!) screws to Israel in order to force them into "making peace (read: "surrendering").

Abbas conceded that the right of return as a prerequisite for peace was not viable but instead asked for a symbolic right of return of a few thousand, which was rejected by Livni. At any rate, I fail to see why the return of a people expelled by terrorist forces from their homeland is an issue.
The difference in the EU and US narrative of the ME conflict is truly amazing.

If, as your comments indicate, you do not accept the legitimacy of the State of Israel, there is nothing further to discuss. Israel's right to exist is non-negotiable, as is well known to all parties. Giving up the "right of return" is also non-negotiable, since this "right" implies an unacceptable carte blanche to flood the State of Israel with Palestinians committed to its destruction. This is also well understood by all parties, including the PA, who nonetheless can be seen by the posted article to claim not to be willing to accept any peace proposal with this provision.
Hamas has never accepted the legitimacy of the State of Israel and has never agreed to negotiate anything other than a temporary cease fire with Israel. As indicated already, the reason that the PA is essentially preventing any further negotiations with Israel at this point is that they believe they will be awarded a state by the UN without the need to negotiate or compromise on anything, including the "right of return". The other reason, of course, is that they are already rather unpopular due to their corrupt and undemocratic ways, and cannot afford the wrath of Hamas and others who are even more extreme and intransigent in their views, and who would be highly critical of any concession whatsoever to the hated Jews.
In case there is any question or doubt, let me state it here categorically. The reason that there is no peace between Israel and the Palestinians is that the Arab & Muslim world will not accept the sovereignty of the Jewish people in their own state of any size or shape anywhere in the middle east. This has been the problem since before day one of the State of Israel and, with the few now endangered exceptions of peace with Jordan and Egypt, it remains unchanged as the real obstacle to peace. If your solution to this problem is for Israel to commit national suicide, I'll just tell you that this is not going to happen.
