When unstable wingnuts from the creationist/secession state are packing concealed heat to class, how much academic freedom will there be? Will debate opponents just concede if they see a suspicious bulge? I mean is that your final argument in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Texas senators have voted to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into public college classrooms.

Monday’s vote is a major push on an issue that has stalled in the Senate and House despite overwhelming support from lawmakers in the Republican-dominated Legislature.

Texas senators have voted to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into public college classrooms.

Honestly, I’m surprised it took them this long. The Texas Legislature has a GOP supermajority, 101-49, over the Dems. And of the Dems in office, many of them could be considered Blue Dogs or fairly conservative as well.

Thankfully, this is for public universities, and mine is a private school.

Liberal that I am, I instantly imagined a deranged undergraduate coming at me with a firearm. But then I tapped my Republican side (paternal) and pictured myself in my office hours:

“Oh, you don’t like the grade you got in my class? Wanna complain to the department chair?” BLAM!

“This paper — you didn’t write it, did you? You bought it online. Come on, confess. CONFESS, OR YOU’RE DEAD MEAT!”

Or in class:
“Hey you in the back row. Yeah, you. You’re not listening to the lecture, are you? You’re fooling around on the internet, right? Know what we do to kids who surf instead of paying attention?” BLAM!

Faculty meetings could also become a lot more, er, brief.
