Civility
I will post this without a comment except we need more courageous people like this in politics. And, to quote for truth: Civility is Strength.

I’m a big fan of civility and I wish more people were.
But many people have a Manichean mind set, where there is good and there is evil without the slightest hint of grey. Such people can no more be civil to their opponents than Gandalf can be polite to orcs.
Until that changes incivility will still be a big thing.
I’m one of the older people on this forum and I’ve watched civility wane over many decades. It breaks my heart. Politically, civility has been going downhill all my adult life. It doesn’t really look like one sides fault; it’s just this huge slide.
It is obvious that negative campaigning works. Even some commercials use it. (Remember the line, “AT&T, lighten up” from an MCI commercial?) Successful techniques are hard to extinguish.
I applaud this effort, and this post. That won’t do much.
re: #2 Pythagoras
I grew up knowing a guy who’d been through the McCarthy period and the civil rights period, and he felt that the level of civility hadn’t really declined much from an overall perspective.

Absolutely. The visciousness of the attacks on FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt were the dress rehearsal for the attacks on OHB and the FLOTUS. (Those attacks are still going on—repel of the New Deal is the real goal of the Ryan Republicans. ) Before that you can find traces of obscene attacks on Lincoln and Jefferson
re: #4 Decatur Deb
You can even see echoes of it, like that weird anti-semite over at Hoft’s place who was talking about Jews worshiping FDR, etc. That’s some vintage hate.
Not to mention the level of incivility towards blacks that has always been present in this country.
