Keeping my fingers crossed. I’ve been to several commitment ceremonies here in NY and all but one of the couples said they would officially marry if it becomes the law.

I didn’t take his statement as implying that being gay is a disability. I think he was just saying that his life experience has given him broader insight into the human condition, and made him more empathetic. I’m all for that.

I don’t think the added empathy hides the implication. If he (or the article?) said it was because his kids were gay - or even better, if he said that it’s the American principle that everyone has equal rights under the law like this Republican veteran did then I would have posted this article with pride instead of disappointment.

I think it doesn’t matter how the crack in the wall is opened in a person’s mind, as long as it’s opened. If having disabled grand children allowed Mr McDonald to see that people are who they are and that different doesn’t mean bad then I’m all for it.

Among the many things I can’t understand about conservatives is that they so often claim to be Christians, yet they seem unable to recognize that they cannot understand the circumstances others face and should simply give them the benefit of the doubt. Most people are basically good and just doing their best to get by. Love they neighbor, and do what you can to lift him up. Why are conservatives so afraid that somebody, somewhere, is getting something they they haven’t earned?

I’m with @2 peterb. I think the “grandchildren with disabilities” bit was a very poor paraphrase by the journalist. I’d look more to the direct quote:

You realize that people and circumstances aren’t always what you think they’re going to be… develop a little more sensitivity… As a father, as a grandfather you try to do the right thing, you care about people.

The fact that his younglings are disabled means that he’s had to grow up, face the cold hard reality, and realize that not everyone is of a Platonic Ideal.

I call bias by the reporter. Maybe there was some bad blood between the two of them, but that paraphrase is a full gainer with a half Gordian twist.

Are we being manipulated by the MSM again?
