Fox Host: Free Birth Control Is Liberal Conspiracy To ‘Eradicate The Poor’

Public health officials and women’s rights groups are cheering the recent recommendation of the Institute of Medicine that “health insurers should pay for a range of services for women at no cost, including birth control, counseling on sexually transmitted diseases, and AIDS screening.”

But unsurprisingly, many on the right immediately lashed out at the decision, denouncing it as “feminist pork” or tantamount to government-sponsored abortion. Some particularly vile reactions came from Fox News, where host Greg Gutfeld said eliminating birth control co-pays was part of a much more sinister leftist plot:

Wow i actually agree with Fox on something. I too believe the liberals have an agenda to try to eradicate the poor.

Well, yes, if poor people can choose to have two kids as opposed to eight, and not spend a fortune on birth control, it might improve their economic status so…I’ll buy that.

This is so revealing when you stop to think about it. If free birth control allows people to better their economic situation, to the point where we have fewer “poor”, then that messes with the fundamentalist Christian interpretation of “the poor will always be with us” - no more poor, no handy underclass to make them feel superior about clearly being a better Christian and being rewarded by God for it. Ugh.

Once upon a time conservatives claimed women on the old AFDC were having more kids to get more welfare money. There were proposals to cap AFDC to prevent this. It was quite a big issue for a while. Now they’re complaining liberals want to limit the number of children born to poorer women? It’s no use. I can’t keep up with the conservalogic.

The point being that INDIVIDUALs can choose when and how often to have children. Many still won’t—many will.

In the end, all we want is for those are are conceived, are WANTED and born to healthy mothers.

Contraception is such a gift.

Yes. More people being taxed has to be worse. Think of the excess spending that would result. Hospitals, roads, solar power, visits to Mars. The list is endless.

This may earn me some flames, but I’m mixed about the decision. I generally oppose healthcare coverage mandates since they raise the price of insurance (strangely enough, by the amount of mandated coverage). I also think this will have minimal benefit as people who have insurance either have money or employment — not exactly those we’re most worried about. Medicaid and various subsidies already cover this stuff for the poor.

What disturbs me about this is that the host seems to think that “poor” is an unchanging state of being. As if “poor” people were a race. This is pretty much going back to a permanent caste system: rich and poor are born that way and stay that way. That would be the only way you could “eradicate” an entire class. Very revealing about this host’s worldview.
