The celebrity is the issue when he’s an insane douche:

June 22, 2010

President Obama:

You will be the first American president that lied to the Jewish people, and the American people as well, when you said that you would defend Israel, the only Democratic state in the Middle East, against all their enemies. You have done just the opposite. You have propagandized Israel, until they look like they are everyone’s enemy — and it has resonated throughout the world. You are putting Israel in harm’s way, and you have promoted anti-Semitism throughout the world.

You have brought this to a people who have given the world the Ten Commandments and most laws we live by today. The Jewish people have given the world our greatest scientists and philosophers, and the cures for many diseases, and now you play a very dangerous game so you can look like a true martyr to what you see and say are the underdogs. But the underdogs you defend are murderers and criminals who want Israel eradicated.

You have brought to Arizona a civil war, once again defending the criminals and illegals, creating a meltdown for good, loyal, law-abiding citizens. Your destruction of this country may never be remedied, and we may never recover. I pray to God you stop, and I hope the people in this great country realize your agenda is not for the betterment of mankind, but for the betterment of your politics.

With heartfelt and deep concern for America and Israel,

Jon Voight

I think the whole issue of celebrity comments having any weight at all is a little bit off. But that’s our culture. Voight is an actor, has done some good work, and that’s that. However, you don’t need an special insight to see who’s in a hospital.

I can agree that treating injured people is one of the least morally questionable things people can do, so I have no problem with saying nice things about hospitals, doctors, etc.

Hospital photo-ops fall into a more morally ambiguous area. Maybe it’s good to publicize things like this. On the other hand, Voight wouldn’t be the first person to selfishly use a bedside photo op to burnish his own rep. Not sure what his motivation is so I won’t pass judgement on it.

He’s right when he says,

The American public thinks Israel is strong, tough, and smart, but needs to remember that it is also humane, vulnerable, and surrounded by enemies.

But I think Isreal and its supporters need to be wary of its friends as well as its enemies. This will sound cheesy, but it reminds me of a line from Goodfellas (1990):

If you’re part of a crew nobody tells you they’re going to kill you. There aren’t any arguments or curses like in the movies. Your murderers come with smiles. They come as your friends. People who cared for you all your life. They always seem to come when you’re weakest and most in need of their help.

That’s a good line, but the good news there is that Voight’s not one of those fundie nutjobs. He’s made an error getting that close to the Tea Party, but he’s not a crazy.

Voight is correct on this matter. However once he finds out Israel engages in activities an American wingnut might call socialistic, he will probably flip his friggin wig.

And let’s give thanks to all the great people like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, William Bennett, Glenn Beck, Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Dennis Miller, Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, John Kasich, Michael Steele, Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, Thomas Sowell, Victor Davis Hanson, Shelby Steele, Charles Krauthammer, Michelle Malkin, Fred Barnes

Take a look at that list that Mr. Voight calls great people and then decide if you still think he is not one of the crazies.

Voight is now more suspect if he’s connected to the Glenn Beck traveling circus:

… a visit by actor Jon Voight to a Beersheva hospital to comfort victims of grad rocket strikes on the city was featured prominently on Israel’s main online news site Ynet.co.il on Sunday night, around the same time that Voight arrived at the Ceasaria Amphitheatre to a warm round of applause.

John Voight is just another unhinged conservative bigot, who happens to be famous.
