You know, why not. There are already toothless hillbillies glorifying killing gators for profit on "Swamp People." You know, because the godly human population is in immediate peril from them.

That's why they need to go way out beyond civilization, bait them with hooks, and return to their bait traps to kill them. Because if not for thrillseeking hillbillies in motorized boats seeking them out, they'd be on someone's doorstep out there in the middle of the swamp far away from civilization.

Or something.

That's how the minds of fundies/hillbillies/the GOP works. Drilling fits in that picture perfectly.

Drill for what?

IIRC the Everglades are underlain by porous limestones. Even if there was a source rock for oil, it lacks any sort of trap to keep it there.

There is actually some oil production nearby:

On Monday, the Park Service released its environmental assessment of plans by Collier Resources Company, which owns the mineral rights to Big Cypress National Preserve, to use buried explosives to search for more oil in the preserve. Collier Resources, which already produces 100,000 gallons of oil a day from beneath the preserve, plans to conduct exploratory drilling throughout a 41 square mile tract.

The alligator hunt in Louisiana is actually carefully managed to maintain alligator populations. It is not about protecting people, it is about the profits from the gators' meat and hides. Nothing wrong with that.

re: #4 Dark_Falcon

I had the misfortune to watch the show, where the toothless hillbilly hunters repeatedly say without "thinning" the population humanity would be overrun with the things.

That's why they go out to the boonies to kill them. Not in neighborhoods, but out in the boonies.

I watched a few episodes. There's nothing careful about it. Nobody but the film crew sees what's going on. This isn't like a busy intersection where a cop is going to ticket you if you're speeding. It's the swamp.

These things dangle and roll in the water from baited hooks until some hillbilly comes by to shoot them in the head.

It's fucked. The people doing it are fucked.
