More bad news for those battling a sweet tooth: eating chocolate is good for you.

Regular consumption may slash the risk of developing heart disease by a third, according to research published in the British Medical Journal and presented today at the European Society of Cardiology’s conference in Paris.

Red wine and coffee have already been shown to have health benefits. Now chocolate. Honestly, all I need now is a study that shows crusty french bread and goat cheese decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s, and I will be all set.

Yes, it is.

But it should be noted, and is mentioned in some reports on this story, that “chocolate” is all too often used as a synonym for “candy”.

The goodness of chocolate, real chocolate, comes from the ingredients in the cacao bean. Most of the “chocolate” candies sold in the US have very little of the cacao bean (including the cocoa butter as well) included and are mostly sugar.

I eat mostly dark chocolate, even semi-sweet chocolate. The good stuff does cost more, though.
