Don't get me wrong, I do like Nirvana, and I feel that Cobain did an excellent job of crediting the Pixies as their inspiration.

In the interest of full disclosure, the Pixies were before my time, although I have liked what little I've heard from them. That said, I have no prejudice against "old" music or bands; my favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan are among my favorite artists.
Nirvana just holds a special place in this music geek's heart. Smells Like Teen Spirit changed the direction of rock music for the better, and songs like Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, In Bloom, Lithium, Come as You Are, and Rape Me are transcendent. When you consider their short time together, the number of classics Nirvana produced is astounding. Even some of their more obscure, lesser-known stuff (like Frances Farmers Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle- a great song for any Nirvana fan to check out) is brilliant. Just look at how much better their simple, B-side piece of filler You Know You're Right was than anything else being played in 2002. Just an awesome band.

Heh. Do you know the Cobain quote about Smells Like Teen Spirit?

I know he disliked all the attention the song got, especially since he didn't consider it his best. It's not my personal favorite Nirvana song, and I actually prefer In Utero to Nevermind, but it's hard to argue over SLTS's (get your mind out of the gutter!) significance. Plus, a lot of artists seem to get sick of the songs that make them legends; look at some of Robert Plant's comments on Stairway to Heaven.

The Replacements & Husker Du were probably my favorite bands in the 80s. I prefer both to Nirvana, but, much as I do enjoy the Pixies, Nirvana was more up my alley. Kurt Cobain was a rare gem in punk rock, a guy who could actually sing as well as he could write.
That Nirvana broke through helps their case here, and while much is made of the influence of the Pixies, I always thought Nirvana owed more to the 'Mats, and in a good way.
A lot of punk bands were either broken up or in serious decline by the late 80s. Then there was Soul Asylum, Jane's Addiction, the early Goo Goo Dolls, and even the more accessible R.E.M., in what eventually became known as 'alternative' music. And, of course, Mudhoney, and the other Seattle/Pac NW bands. The Pixies were one of the major bands of the era...but Nirvana transcended 'grunge' and had a range (best displayed on 'Unplugged') that I don't think too many others could come close to.
