Shortly after the event, Husseini received an email from the Press Club informing him, “We are suspending your membership for two weeks, effective immediately, due to your conduct at a news conference held at the National Press Club.”

Do they have guidelines on how to question touchy royals?

Do they have guidelines on how to question touchy royals?

Heh, apparently they need some.

From their very own code of ethics (added emphasis mine):

Walter William's Journalist's Creed

This creed was written by Walter Williams (1864-1935), the man who founded the world's first school of journalism at the University of Missouri and perhaps contributed more toward the promotion of professional journalism than any other person of his time. [...]

I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart to be true. I believe that suppression of the news, for any consideration other than the welfare of society, is indefensible. [...]

I believe that the journalism which succeeds the best—and best deserves success—fears God and honors man; is stoutly independent; unmoved by pride of opinion or greed of power; constructive, tolerant but never careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful of its readers but always unafraid, is quickly indignant at injustice; is unswayed by the appeal of the privilege or the clamor of the mob; [...]

So much for ethics. //

One or more of these people was embarrassed, and someone had to pay.

No doubt. It's embarrassing. It's bad enough that they censor their own press, but now they come over here and throw a hissy fit, so we slap a supension on one of our journalists? WTF?

Hamrick: "It is very important that we maintain a level of decorum at our Luncheons and Newsmaker events consistent with our long-held goal of providing forums for civil discussion and newsgathering."

I look forward to the Kim Jong Il luncheon.

From the statement:

The Club staff did not recommend this Member be temporarily suspended because he asked tough questions – which we encourage, not discourage. Rather, the recommendation was based on an allegation that his behavior was disruptive and unruly, and not for the first time. Most of that was not captured by any cameras.

How convenient. ///

I guess it's like a dinner party --without the alcohol.

Everyone is supposed to make nice, no fights, no scenes, no scandal . . .

Yeah, everybody's a diva now. Softball questions only, please—nothing that might make anyone uncomfortable or be difficult to answer.

This shows the issues in the US right now, to a point.

Not much to learn except how utterly craven the NPC appears to be. The smugly unrepentant, misogynistic autocrats are still smugly unrepentant, misogynistic autocrats; we'll remain among the enablers of the status quo as long as we're still dependent on their oil & strategic location; and Saudi women will have no choice but to continue begging for crumbs within the existing system as long as there's no strong incentive for the regime to push for more rapid change.
