MythBusters Cannonball Experiment Gone Wrong… Hits Houses and Car in Dublin, CA
I’m a big Mythbusters fan, but here something was either horribly miscalculated or something went horribly wrong, someone could have easily died in this accident.

I’m a big fan of the show but holy-moly what a screw-up. I hope the show isn’t cancelled, but it will have to be put on hold until there is a thorough investigation and the results assessed.
Having been a range safety officer in the Army, I can see one major problem right away. A police bomb range like this one is simply not adequate for testing explosive projectile weapons of any kind, let alone a cannon. Note that the first house hit was just 700 yards from the launch point. This is probably an order of magnitude lower than the safe distance even for an improvised cannon.
Whatever errors were made in loading and designing the device would not have mattered if the range had been large enough to meet the requirements of a worst case scenario.

This isn’t the first potentially lethal accident the show has had. A couple of years ago an unoccupied car they were running into a barrier crashed through a retaining wall and went over an embankment onto a public street. Nobody was hurt there, either but, as in the Dublin incident, that was just a matter of dumb luck

Apparently this was not the only incident involving the range, though the other one does not involve the Mythbusters. I suspect the range was there a long time before the housing went in-and the houses are just too close to it.
This is not to excuse the the errors made here, but it seems that they are handling it very well. I haven’t heard reports of a single actual complaint about it all and the insurance company and the Head Mythbusters themselves have been out talking to the victims and apologizing. Might be a lesson for big corporations to learn?
