Where are they? Same place as they always have been - the eccentric uncle who lives in the attic. The spinster aunt with a half dozen cats.

Autism has probably always been around just like ADHD - the question is really did it provide some evolutionary advantage or is the simple fact that humans are able to show compassion the reason it continues to exist in the genome?

This whole series in the LA times is really good. My teenage son has a mild form of Asperger's and it's SO hard. For all the info and "awareness"out there, the world is a remarkably cold and mean place for people with autism. There's lot's of early intervention and stuff for young children on the spectrum, but at about middle school age it goes away unless you have a ton of money. I get so scared for my son sometimes. What will happen to him if something happens to me?

I don't know where you should turn, but a lawyer might be a good start.
