We need to hire an idiot for state government for idiot checks…

Let’s be clear: I don’t mind government employees going to conferences. I mind them staying in $200 rooms at those conferences, while my children sit jammed 40-45 to a classroom in a school that just cut “unnecessary” classes like French 3 and French 4.

I’ve never stayed in a $200 hotel room. Most Oregonians probably haven’t.

Doesn’t anyone have the common sense to say “In this recession, with 20% of the state on food stamps, maybe we should make sure our expenditures aren’t wildly out of line with what the rest of the state thinks is reasonable?”

We need to have an idiot check for the idiots who thought this was a good idea.

Kudos to the Oregonian for keeping government honest.

The thing is that at the conference centers set-up to host these kinds of events, that is what the rooms cost. In any metropolitan area, that is what rooms cost.

I’d also like to know how the author arrived at that amount ($194). Did he call the front desk and ask what the rate was?

Often there is a discount given to groups. It could have been a $250/night room they paid $194. Or it could have been a $194 (strange rate) room they actually paid $160 for.

If the only way to do it is that expensively, they should hold off until the funding crisis is over. Or perhaps they could find a way to hold the conferences in Portland, which I am sure has plenty of conference rooms for rent.

I don’t know, if it is National Conference —association of others in the field, there may not be a choice and these kind of things are usually beneficial. My husband attends a lot of conferences etc. I think they are insane, but they bring in business.
