Todd Wood is a rare species of a young-earth creationist - the intellectually honest kind. He also has a genuine degree and is one helluva smart person.

Surprised I’m saying this about a YEC? Then read this:

Intellectually honest but fundamentally confused.

Intellectually honest but fundamentally confused.

I actually wanted to write that, but then I thought that confusion is probably not the right word. He is aware of what he is doing and why he is doing it, so I don’t know if calling him confused explains anything.

His main justification for his belief is his acceptance of the Bible’s version of history based on faith, which in my mind, is an un-reasoned emotional response to the stress of trying to internalize an idea contrary to accepted evidence. I’m not sure you can assume his intellectual side has much input into this particular belief.

That’s my point. It doesn’t. He doesn’t attempt an intellectual justification. Hence, he is not intellectually confused. On what level is he confused, then?

I’m not using the word confused to refer to strictly intellectual processes.

Saying he’s fundamentally confused isn’t just about his rational side coming to a conclusion but about the decision making process of internalizing an idea. No matter how rational we consider an idea, the act of internalizing the idea requires emotion. That is basic human psychology. When both the intellectual and the emotional agree there is no latent confusion, but when they disagree there is a disconnect that has to be dealt with - the emotional side has to be satisfied. His rationalization of faith is his way of satisfying that emotion, but the rationalization is still in conflict with his intellectual understanding of reality.

He’s juggled his way out of immediate dissonance, but the conflict is still there.

If you believed the bible literally and believe it holds truths about earth’s creation isn’t it ironic that you are christian and thereby refusing basic tenants of that holy book you hold to be true. Wouldn’t those same people who hold the Torah to be exact raise it over the rants of the Apostle Paul?
