Evangelical Hate Publisher Branches out to Overseas
California-based Chick Publications, an evangelical company listed as a hate group by US civil rights organisations, printed the pamphlets but no Australian distributor was identified on the documents.
Church groups in Canberra and Queanbeyan have denied responsibility for delivering them, the Canberra Times has reported.
ACT Human Rights and Discrimination Commissioner Helen Watchirs said “name and shame” laws could be used for the first time if the pamphlets’ distributors were found.
“They are not harmless and they’ve certainly crossed the line to be highly offensive,” Dr Watchirs said.
NSW Anti-Discrimination Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian said the material would need to have a racial element to breach the law as religion alone was not covered.
The Australian anti-Muslim activities come amid attacks on mosques overseas.
