Operation Overlord 68 years ago today
Sixty-eight years ago today the largest amphibious assault was launched. The weather was far from perfect. As a matter of fact it was almost cancelled. It was a decision that was not taken lightly. General Eisenhower did give the go ahead since the weather forecast was going to get worse later in the week. It was considered a very risky operation to invade Europe this way. In the end the Allies gained a european beachhead and it was the turning point of World War Two. Here is some more information from Wikipedia including a few more code names such as Operation Neptune. en.wikipedia.org
