Only the last six years? I think you could go back a lot farther than that.

Much of this kind of spending comes not from members’ contributions to a PAC but directly from unions’ dues-funded coffers. There is no requirement that unions report all of this kind of spending to the Federal Election Commission, or FEC.

That is exactly the kind of spending that infuriates my union friends. Writers Guild, SAG and IATSE, 3 for 3.

re: #3 Daniel Ballard

I agree. It has been going on longer than six years. I can think of a few “promised” dollars from a local union to a candidate who said there would be no strike. It was more than ten years ago.

This is a WSJ study, It’s basically a hit piece. Of the 4.4 billion cited, 1.1 billion went to candidates, PACs and similar organizations and the other 3.3 billion was internal. So when a union paid for protesters food in Wisconsin, that gets counted as political spending. When the AFL-CIO calls members to tell them about legislation that would damage their collective bargaining rights, that gets counted as political spending.

Meanwhile, the US chamber of Commerce has a $200 million dollar annual budget. If we apply the same test that the WSJ is using for union to the USCoC we see that just that one organization spend roughly the same amount of money on politics as the entire US labor movement. Gee, why isn’t that news?
