Florida Man Kills Door-to-Door Salesman: I’ll Kill Anybody That Steps on My Property

A co-worker who witnessed the shooting said Rainey had knocked on Roop’s door, but received no answer. While Rainey was walking down the drive-way, Roop pulled up in his pickup truck and asked why Rainey was at his house. Rainey explained that he was selling steak and seafood. The witness said Roop then pulled out a black handgun and shot Rainey. As Rainey lay on the ground, Roop fired another bullet into the back of his head.

Roop’s neighbors described him as ‘the neighborhood crazy.’ Roop has a concealed weapons permit and approximately 14 firearms.

There are too many paranoid people in this country and this shows it. I can understand not wanting people on his property but killing them, taking another life? That's insane.

What a load of crap. It was a cold-blooded execution of a completely innocent man, and this knuckle-dragging cretin is trying to hide behind that idiotic SYG law.

& now Florida approaches 1 million concealed weapons permits Should be super-safe any moment. I wonder what happens to the Florida economy based on tourism as the gun violence increases. Doesn't seem super-smart to me.

America has a homicidal mania culture. There are no industrialized first world nations that kill each other in such numbers in peacetime. America's homicide rate is slightly better (emphasis on slightly) than Iraq's and Iraq is a fucking war sectarian anarchic war zone.

About 20 years ago, tourists here had a problem, because the bad people knew they couldn't arrive with guns, and they were getting robbed, because they were "safe bets" to not be armed, as FL residents may well be - that occurred with the easing of the CW permit process. One of the changes was the rental car companies were allowed to not have their licenses plates make them so recognizable (not sure of that detail, but they used to be able to be clearly identified by their tags), which helped make tourism safer as a result.

There are a lot of these fucking lunatics in and around Lubbock. Again, assholes, you cannot shoot a "trespasser" merely for being on your property even if you have the requisite signs.

These psychos are typically what I (and the cops) call "fringe dwellers," living on the outer edges of suburbia, often just outside the reach of city zoning laws so their trailers and ramshackle houses will not be subject to what they regard as oppressive government interference.
I know one fringe-dweller who has not had a paying job in 20 years. He lives in a run-down trailer that actually belongs to his father. He has never, to my knowledge, been on a date with a woman yet he rails against the "gay agenda." He owns more than 30 guns. He eeks out a living selling guns and gun parts at shows and online.

Another one wrote a thinly veiled work of fiction about a frustrated taxpayer shooting up a city hall meeting and assassinating a certain councilman. He has referred to the councilman as a "racemixer" in various online rants. He has been banned from city hall by court order but still has his CHL and a number of guns.

These are the fantasy driven fools who long for a general break-down of law and order through nuclear war, natural disaster, etc. (referred as "wtshtf", "when the shit hits the fan," in survivalist circles). At that point, they imagine they can storm into town with their guns and "take over," since of course they are superior alpha males despite their lack of appeal to the opposite sex. In reality, an authentic breakdown would be the end of them, as genuinely desperate people will feel compelled to protect themselves from crazy marauders and violent loners. If somebody starts shooting passers-by on the theory that they are looters, for example, those capable of cooperation will simply get up a posse and dispose of the menace. The fringe cases are incapable of cooperation, even with each other. That alone would doom them if their apocalyptic fantasies did happen to come true.

I've been doing some thought experiments on just what it would take to forcibly remove all or most of the privately owned firearms in this country. A requirement for registration would result in the largest program of civil disobedience in history and would therefore be useless.

The only way to confiscate all the guns would be through a series of massive cordon and search operations. These would have to be conducted by troops and paramilitary police with armor and air support and authorization to use heavy weapons at the first sign of resistance. The operations would have to be conducted in contiguous blocs and movement between blocs would have to remain restricted for some time. This would be necessary to keep gun owners from simply moving their weapons to areas that had already been searched. Needless to say, such an undertaking would destroy most of the Constitution and not just the Second Amendment.

Suppose we could somehow get around that, the military chiefs would miraculously not balk at the idea, and we could start rolling the tanks down Main Street to deal with recalcitrant gun nuts. About 90 million individuals own firearms in this country. Of those, I would expect around 5%, 4-5 million, to offer serious resistance. Overcoming them would result in around 4 million casualties, including 500,000-1,000,000 dead. About 10% of the latter would be police and security forces and many would be innocent bystanders or hostages. Property damage and economic disruption would be in the trillions. Such an operation would still miss millions of hidden or buried guns and would do nothing about the widespread knowledge of how to make them from scratch.

Insane? Of course it is, but the really insane part is that millions of people have been convinced that such an operation is likely, if not imminent.

This is a cultural and social problem and must be approached from that view-point.
